clip in fringes/those hairy scrunchie things

Due to illness my hair is not great and not as thick as it was, but will gradually recuperate. I used to love my fringe and have been looking at clip in ones by ken paves on (gasp) QVC, both blunt cut and side fringe, just in case I go anywhere and want to do something special. I have also looked at the scrunchie things to make a messy bun (would be ideal when busy with DCs).

I did a quick search here and some of you might have used them. Could you tell me whether they are really any good, resilient, look reasonably natural? I wouldn't use them all the time, so would there be any chance of damage to hair?

If you match it reasonably well to your own hair colour and attach it well, there is no reason why it wouldn't look lovely :)

Also for the bun look, if you haven't got thick enough hair for a bun ring etc then you can buy ready-done buns like this but if you try places like Claire's accessories etc then you may find better examples.

I've used the messy bun things and they can look really good, but you have to get a good match with your hair. I bought one in selfridges and was shown how to twist the elastic band bit into a figure of 8, then use a chopstick to fix above your own bun/ponytail.

Thanks NoMoreMarbles (just after I posted I thought I'd get horribly ridiculed for my interest in hair attachments Xmas Blush.)

I think that finding a colour match is going to be my biggest problem! When I put my hair back I am tired of the usual black elastic band, so the scrunchie thing with hair could be something else to do: I could just about approximate a bun shaped thing with the hair I have with that. The clip in fringes seem to be a bit more advanced, perhaps they'd take a little more confidence/chutzpah on my part to make them work.

ReinDearPrudence thanks! do you remember what brand you have? Am intrigued about the chopstick (do you leave it in?)

You are welcome :)

I have the opposite problem in which my hair is ridiculously think and I can't do a thing with it Hmm my mum however, had chemo for breast cancer and it left her hair very thin and brittle and it is still recovering now (cancer free for 8 years :) ) I helped her find ways to make her hair appear thicker and a bun ring was one of them. The trick is to put the ring over your pony tail, pull it 3/4 of the way down your hair, tuck in the loose ends around the ring and then roll it down your hair to the hair bobble and pin it in. It makes a big and messy a you like bun that looks like your hair is twice as thick as usual Smile it was like a revelation and takes about 30 seconds to do!

Thanks NoMoreMarbles, I'll get one of those too!

I don't remember the brand, but it was from Selfridges. Yes, you leave the chopstick(s) in.
I've had a bit of a trawl round youtube but can't find a demo, sorry! Well I can find videos of making buns with chopsticks, but not where you use the chopstick to fix in the hairpiece. It's a really secure way to fix it in though, and because it twists the hairpiece it creates a nice messy look.

Thanks - I was hoping to visit Selfridges once the sales madness calms down a little. I shall have a look then.

I actually found a few of the ken paves hair clip in extensions (bun, fringe and additional length pieces) at my local discount uk store; only £5!

scripsi · 02/01/2013 02:56

Hmm, I don't have a discount UK store near me ... but I would be willing to travel for that kind of saving! Did you get the Ken Paves fringe at all Janji?

I bought a clip in fringe. Have to say, it does look a bit fake-ish but it's a doddle to put in.

scripsi · 02/01/2013 21:28

hmm, I might have to have a go.

Not the fringe; got the ready made bun and the double layered long extension that goes around the top back of your head.
