I would be grateful for any advice - how on earth do I get my makeup (mainly foundation) to last more than an hour. I use it daily - but by 10am it looks like is all gone. I've even been informed its nice to see not everyone feels the need to wear makeup!!! I don't want to look heavily made up - but even coverage and less tired. All help gratefully received!

What sort are you using?

I use Max Factor facefinity, ot's good coverage without being too heavy. Then I use the new Maybelline 'Me' translucent powder over the top.

MrsBradleyCooper · 30/12/2012 23:02

The main reason why people's make up slides off is that they apply it to warm skin or whilst standing in a humid bathroom/in front of a radiator.

A good tip is to spray your face with a water spray then let it evaporate before applying foundation. Or apply in front of an open window. Using a primer and a loose powder over the top should help too.

I have oily skin and have the same problem. In order for it to stay I don't wear moisturiser under neath the makeup. I use a hyaluronic acid serum from bravura that is not greasy.
I wear a primer to help it stick , a good one is mac prep and prime .
Also using a translucent powder to fix afterwards .

I use bobbi brown gel eyeliner , only one that stays put .

Eyeshadow is difficult cos some primers make my eyelids look dry .

QuinnFabray · 30/12/2012 23:05

Use a primer, a long lasting foundation ( Estee Lauder Double Wear or Revlon Colorstay for example ), and set it with a powder or a setting spray. All these things help to make my foundation last longer. It depends on your skin type, and mostly on which foundation you're using though.

QuinnFabray · 30/12/2012 23:07

ggirl, are you me? I have oily skin, and use bravura hyarulonic acid, and MAC prep and prime too ( the spf 50 version is best for making foundation stick ).

Selks · 30/12/2012 23:08

I found using a primer made no difference at all to staying power of my foundation.
My makeup generally disappears by lunch time, so I share your frustration. Worst areas are the t zone which gets greasy - just slides off there.
I have the same problem with eye makeup ( mascara and kohl type pencil) Have tried the Estée Lauder double wear mascara - it does last longer but eventually flakes off in little crusty bits many of which end up in my eyes. Not good.
So I hope to pick up a few tips on here too. Smile

haha..we've been on the S&B threads too much

cocolepew · 30/12/2012 23:10

Maybelline do an eye shadow called Eye Tattoo, it doesn't budge.

ggirl · 30/12/2012 23:10

I am searching for a cheaper version of the mac primer if anyone has any recommendations.

cocolepew · 30/12/2012 23:11

I hate the feel of primer but the Facefinity has a primer in it which is ok.

QuinnFabray · 30/12/2012 23:11

ggirl, that is true. But I've picked up tips that actually work! And feel a desperate need to pass the info on.

QuinnFabray · 30/12/2012 23:13

I hate most primers that are siliconey. They feel horrible and don't help with foundation longevity, if you have oily skin. The MAC prep and prime ( spf one ) isn't siliconey. It's a white lotion. ggirl, I've searched high and low for a cheaper alternative, or any alternative infact, and I've yet to find one. If they discontinue it, I shall cry.

QuinnFabray · 30/12/2012 23:15

Actually the La Roche Posay anthelios mat sunscreen, did a pretty good job. That's about £13. Not as good, but not bad either. Think it gives me spots though.

MrsBradleyCooper · 30/12/2012 23:16

Laura mercer primer is the best IMO.

ggirl · 30/12/2012 23:18

yup I've used that anthelios stuff and it gives me spots too
I've tried makeupforever and smashbox primers and they give me spots and don't really work

so i guess I'll have to keep forking out

hatgirl · 30/12/2012 23:21

try vichy dermablend (can get it in most boots in the skin care bit) its supposed to be for hiding scars/ tattoos but its the best foundation I have ever used. It is non comedogenic also so good for people with spot prone skin as it doesn't clog pores.

Rather than using a primer try the La Roche Posay 'Effaclar' range, particularly the 'Effaclar M' which is a 'mattifying' mosturiser. Again LRP is a non comedogenic range so will minimise the risk of acne if you have oily skin. I use Effaclar M as a make up base instead of a primer. The La Roche Posay stuff is sold next to the Vichy Dermablend foundation in Boots. So once you have found one you have found both!

Wheresmypopcorn · 30/12/2012 23:27

Does benefit pore professional act as a primer or would you need an additional primer?

hatgirl · 30/12/2012 23:27

I must add that after having perfect skin until my late 20s I developed bad acne/ acne scarred skin that most normal foundations made worse but also didn't cover the existing damage. I started using the products above after 18 months of face hell and I can now just about get by with just a concealer (i use one from the body shop which again is non comedogenic - see the theme) on work days. I've find if you have oily skin less is sometimes more!

QuinnFabray · 30/12/2012 23:29

Yup, the la Roche Posay efflaclar range is bloody good. I'm currently using the toner stuff, and the efflaclar k. My skin definately seems less congested since I started using it. Need to experiment and see if that would work as a primer on it's own. And yes, the Vichy foundation is good. Although I found it a bit heavy for me. Love the stick version as a concealer though.

The most long wearing foundation I've tried, which beats EL double wear and any other, is Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme. It's phenomenal and I recommend it to anyone who has problems with their foundation staying put. Sadly it's not available in the UK, and I have to buy it on eBay.

QuinnFabray · 30/12/2012 23:33

hatgirl, sadly I've been blessed with oily skin and terrible thread veins all over my cheeks and nose. Can't get away with less is more, but it's driven me to find out what actually works.

LouThomp · 30/12/2012 23:34

Thank you all - loads of advice! I've actually got quite dry skin. Have tried clarins foundation (one that is up posed to last all day - better but not good) and have been given an YSL one for Christmas - l

LouThomp: you are not applying foundation straight after moisturiser, are you? Moisturiser needs time to sink in, otherwise the oils in it will act as a makeup remover. I have dry skin too and I use an oily moisturiser first thing in the morning, let it sink in while I'm having breakfast, get DD ready, so a good half hour and then apply Estee Lauder Double Wear. Lasts me until the end of the day when I wash it off. I use a Clarins primer (siliconey) if I am going out in the evening or my skin is very dry under doublewear. I always set foundation with powder.
My mum's foundation slips off but that is because she uses so much moisturiser that her face is an oil slick (she also has dry skin), applies foundation straight on top (so there is no grip for the foundation), the foundation is an oily one for dry skin (bobbi brown) and she doesnt use powder because she thinks it shows her wrinkles. Basically she's an oily mess and has very dry skin.
