What kind of lifestyle do you lead? Eg if you work fulltime your capsule will be different than if you are at home full time etc.

For casual -
3 pairs skinnies - one indigo, one black, one grey or khakies
1 denim or cord mini or skirt shape to suit
Layering tops in neutrals and in colours to suit you
Ditto jumpers - a couple of v neck cashmere ones if feeling rich, maybe grey and a colour that suits
Couple of jersey dresses
Heeled ankle boots
Chelsea type ankle boots
Tan knee high boots
Parka or peacoat
Biker jacket
Converse type things -low top and leather, maybe metallic
Lots of scarves
Casual blazer

For work -
biker shaped fabric jacket to dress up a skirt or dress without looking suity
pencil skirts
blazer type jacket
Chanel type jacket
Cigarette trousers
Couple of dresses
Silk t shirts or blouses or whatever, depending on what suits you
Black heels
Grey heels
Ballet flats

Any use?

great ideas, thanks :) i do work full time in social care, just feel i always wear frumpy, baggy clothes and never look smart or put together want to look sleek and chic

How smart do you need to be? I have to be jacketed, hence the trying to do jackets which don't actually make a suit thing. I like the jersey dresses from The White Company for work, as they are comfortable but smart and are machine washable. Can be had for about £50 in the sales. I get tired of jackets faster, so tend to buy them for pennies in H&M, or to take advantage of huge reductions on the Hobbs outlet site.

thoughtsbecomethings · 22/12/2012 16:40

There is really no dress code, we can wear jeans etc, which i normally do but often look a real mess and want to smarten up bot not too much.

Okay. Maybe cigarette trousers instead of jeans; jersey dress dressed down with boots and a biker jacket?

What size/shape are you? Do you know what kinds of things suit you?

mirpuppet · 22/12/2012 16:59

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie how long do you White company dresses last?

I purchased one last February and I loved the fit; but it didn't look great by the end of the summer (so not alot of wears -- maybe 10?).

It was grey and I'm wondering if a navy or black would last longer.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2012 17:24

Erm... I've probably worn each of them 20 odd times so far, I guess, including a grey one. They seem to be lasting really well. I wash them every couple of wears, rather than after one wear. And another advantage is that they don't need ironing! :)

mirpuppet · 22/12/2012 21:39

Thanks. I guess I need to stop cooking in mine & maybe it will last longer.

StinkyWicket · 22/12/2012 22:00

You know what, I think I have one of these! Xmas Shock

I've always been the type to buy lots of stuff some of which doesn't fit but I have recently bought the following:

  • 4 pairs of skinnies - black, brown, burgundy and dark green. All from Primark. The colours are twill so more casual but they wash really really well for cheap ones.
  • some tops from Gap. I have about six, ranging from orange to black to white, but they are all classic shapes and are easy to work with.
  • a black blazer. I prefer colours to black but this was the best fit - from Matalan.
  • some chunky ankle boots. They have a heel but it is not high so they are super comfy and trendy. Also Primark!
  • Some brown knee highs from Office. Same small heel.

I wear them all in a mix with or without the jacket, sometimes with a circle scarf with butterflies on it, sometimes with a pendant. I don't really do too much jewellery as I have a one year old who's a bit grabby. I wear the same for casual or for work. I prefer to tart myself up with make up and a nice bag or something.

I know I've spent about £200 on clothes, the Office boots were £90. PS - I'm not skinny I'm not a 16 either the labels are wrong but I have learned not to buy clothes to 'slim into' so surprisingly Xmas Hmm my clothes fit better and look nicer.

StinkyWicket · 22/12/2012 22:00

(I have lots of dresses and skirts etc but with three boys and a full-time job these things I reach for every day)

nilbyname · 22/12/2012 22:07

StinkyWicket · 22/12/2012 22:13

I like to think I look smart and chic BTW Xmas Grin

nilbyname · 22/12/2012 22:15

Stupid phone

Tops-Breton stripes, plain jersey layering tops and some loose knits. I like Zara, warehouse and h&m.

Scarves-lots

Boots- short ankle boots from Hudson , work boots from blundstone, biker boots from fly

Coats- car coat from Zara, pea coat from gap, and dress coat from a boutique and a cape from next

I have a couple of really nice leather bags and ray ban sunnies which sort of pulls it altogether.

Neutral makeup with red lips for going out. Good hair cut, earrings.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2012 22:16

Coats -

I've got: biker jacket / cropped trench / peacoat. I really need something for cold weather - maybe a parka?

Meggles76 · 23/12/2012 07:30

OP if you want a capsule wardrobe it's helpful to stick to a colour theme so that items all work well together. I like muted autumnal colours. The following work for me:
3 pairs skinnys - blue, black, burgundy
1 pair slim leg black trousers
1 cord skirt - teal green
1 jersey style dress - green
4 heat gen tops from M&S in neutral colours
1 Fitted cashmere crew neck in grey
1 Fitted cashmere cardigan in cream
1 white shirt
1 lace blouse
2 bretons - navy stripe and burgundy stripe
1 pair ankle boots - I have Ash Jalouse in grey/black
1 pair knee high riding boots
1 pair patent brogues
2 nice scarves
2 nice bags - black and tan

Jcee · 23/12/2012 08:56

I've been slowly organising my work wardrobe this year to create a capsule wardrobe where everything actually fits and matches. So this is what I now own:

1 pair grey wide Legged trouser
1 pair black straight legged trousers
1 black wool skirt
1 wool skirt thats sort of speckley - main colour is grey
1 stretchy black mini skirt
2 black cami vests
1 black short sleeve blouse
1 green cropped v neck wool cardi
1 black v neck cardi
1 light grey round neck cardi
1 black jersey dress
1 cord dress - burgundy
2 long sleeve jersey top - charcoal and plum
1 pair black ballerinas
1 pair black heels

I know its a bit samey on colours but I started using what I already owned and added to it and as I used to wear exclusively black, I'm slowly trying to introduce colour. It's made getting ready for work about a million times easier

(I work in senior management in an office but as its public sector I need to look smart but not suity if you know what I mean)

nilbyname · 23/12/2012 11:02

remus there are some really nice parkas about, especially Zara.

I also think you need to figure out your colours and sort of stick to that palette op

I have lots of greys, blues, greens and then the occasional splash or orange, red or yellow. Layers tones looks good too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/12/2012 11:10

Thanks Nilby. Zara drives me insane though and the quality is so awful most of the time. I think I'd rather invest in a 'good' one but at sale prices! Size 6, 17 year old dd looks great in Zara stuff but tis not for me.

Meggles - where were your slim leg black trousers from? Mine need replacing and I just can't find any anywhere.

libertychick · 23/12/2012 15:30

remus these black trousers look good
