Nowt against the woman but she has never struck me as being well dressed or stylish herself. She looks like a bag of spanners frankly. No doubt someone will come and tell me I have no understanding of high fashion dialectic.

I think she looks okay actually - more than okay - really very good for 55. Like a friendly normal person as opposed to a scary half-starved fashion editor.

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/12/2012 18:49

I think her advice is fine but she doesn't have a personal style I'd emulate.

And her book was shockingly bad - also feel vogue needs a new editor - the December issue was shite.

faustina · 17/12/2012 20:17

no I wouldn't emulate her style either mrsCB - but don't you think she looks comfortable in her own skin? I don't mean in a slobby I don't care way - just in a way I would rather see than a helmet of blow-dried perfection and a rigid following of current style. I do miss wise and avid by the way : (

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/12/2012 20:19

Oh Faustina so do I Sad

Yes I agree its refreshing to see a fashion editor who looks more normal and I actually think her advice is fair enough really.

Bonsoir · 18/12/2012 08:06

I agree with MrsCampbellBlack - I think it's time Alexandra Shulman moved on. British Vogue is very dodgy these days (though the January issue was an improvement on terrible December).

wordfactory · 18/12/2012 08:37

I think it's as ridiculous to treat the over 50s as a homogenous group as it is to treat the under 21s as one.

TheaJTS · 18/12/2012 08:39

I haven't seen Alexandra Shulman's advice (was it in Vogue, or elsewhere? Any good?), but perhaps it's more to do with her having 'the eye' than suggesting we copy her personal style?
After all, if she spent a lot of time and effort on her own appearance she probably wouldn't have time to write about it/edit Vogue!
I've always assumed that's why Anna Wintour has adopted that helmet hairstyle and totally uniform look - time saver!
There are several other 'grande dames' of fashion (Susie Mankes etc.) who are certainly no fashion plates themselves?
Interesting topic!

Bonsoir · 18/12/2012 11:16

Anna Wintour looks fabulous for her age.

Inès de la Fressange has all sorts of sartorial and grooming advice for the over 50s in her book, La Parisienne. I often see Inès de la Fressange and, frankly, she looks a complete fright in real life (when a stylist hasn't been near her) so I think she has a real nerve dishing out advice.

Nutella43 · 18/12/2012 21:53

Ooo do tell Bonsoir....why is she a fright???
What makes me laugh is that she says in her book how important it is to smell nice and yet she smokes like a chimney.

MariahScarey · 18/12/2012 22:12

Vogue is shit. I "read" at hairdressers. I cannot see the point

Bonsoir · 19/12/2012 08:35

She does that 1980s Parisian "throw my look together" thing, her boyfriend's knackered jeans with high heels and a designer jacket, and she hardly wears any make-up. Frightful!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 19/12/2012 09:00

Her advice isn't too bad - although everyone is so different that it's impossible to have a set of rules that apply to everyone based purely on age.

For once, I agree with a lot of the DM comments; the top, in particular, is unflattering on her, and her hair needs sorting. Not in a 'blow-dried helmet' way, but surely she has access to the best hairdressers/advice that could mean she has something marginally more suitable than a suburban 15 yo's?

Actually, strike that - most 15 yos I know have fabulously unkempt hair!

carbondated · 19/12/2012 10:23

I saw the article and thought she looked a bit of a mess. Yes, it IS nice to see someone in the fashion industry who isn't a botoxed, anorexic, trout-poutey creature, but I thought she looked scruffy which I wouldn't expect from someone working for Vogue. Which I also agree seems an utterly pointless publication.
