Definitely the rail ticket and a nice Swatch at 21!

soaccidentprone · 16/12/2012 12:11

Def rail ticket. I know and work with a lot of young people and it just seems that none of them wear watches any more.

And interrailing would be a brilliant experience.

ggirl · 16/12/2012 12:12

hmm I was worried it may be too precious

she def wants a watch..she's told me but I think maybe a cheaper one from grandparents would be more suitable

Are there no watches she'd like by Citizen, Rotary etc which would be just as nice but much cheaper? My parents bought me a gorgeous Citizen watch when I got my first for my degree (also aged 21), and I love the watch and the memories it represents to me - it's this one, it's exactly to my taste and it looks even nicer in reality.

Although the interrailing ticket is a lovely idea, I think it's best to mark milestone birthdays with something you can keep to look back on and possibly even pass on. I wore my 13th birthday necklace and 18th birthday ring for my wedding, and will be wearing my Bachelor's graduation watch, 21st birthday locket and 1st wedding anniversary ring for my Master's graduation - it's nice to see them in the photos, as it recalls lots of different happy memories all at once!

A watch can be lost or stolen or damaged - she'll never forget the month inter-railing :) (I got a round the world plane ticket for my 18th - best present ever and the only thing I wanted Xmas Shock ) My DH bought me a watch I love, but only a couple of years ago.

Unless she's not actually very adventurous and doesn't want to go inter-railing of course!

ggirl · 16/12/2012 15:04

she def wants to travel , had a gap yr travelling before uni and has caught the bug

I would definitely go for the interrail ticket. I went at 21 and the memories will last a lifetime.

Veneto · 16/12/2012 15:42

Another vote here for the inter-rail ticket especially if she definitely wants to travel. There'll always be nice watches around, but she won't always be in the situation where she can spend that amount of time travelling.

Womenandchickensfirst · 16/12/2012 23:28

100% Inter rail. I went twice at that age, and it's made a lifetime of memories.

lidlqueen · 16/12/2012 23:29

inter-rail ticket, defo.

jinglebellyalltheway · 16/12/2012 23:31

interrail tickets, no question!

LittleChristmasBearPad · 16/12/2012 23:34

Definitely the rail ticket. She'll learn so much about the world and herself. I wish I had done something similar.

BiscuitNibbler · 17/12/2012 07:30

Veneto makes a very good point about the fact that she won't always have the luxury of time free to spend travelling. She can always get a watch later.

AuntLucyInTheNorthPole · 17/12/2012 07:31

Ticket ticket ticket ticket ticket ticket.

My one and sole regret in life is that I didn't do it.

drmelons · 17/12/2012 07:49

Def the ticket, it's what I asked for when I was 18. Found it really hard not to be disappointed when my parents presented me with a small jewelry sized box on the morning of my birthday. Was delighted when I opened it and found it stuffed with £200 rather than jewelry- had the trip of a lifetime!

ggirl · 17/12/2012 08:04

ok have decided def a ticket ..thanks

Ask her, she might have somewhere she really wants to go and prefer something towards a plane ticket?

ggirl · 17/12/2012 08:17

I know she wants to go to Burma but think that may be too £££..tbh haven't even looked up price

OP posts:
ggirl · 17/12/2012 10:04

ticket, ticket, ticket!
Now I am a stay at home mum with little opportunity to travel I really treasure the memories of holidays / travelling I did when I was younger. Incredibly precious and also educational.

OscarPistoriusBitontheside · 17/12/2012 12:24

Interail ticket for sure!

DonaAna · 17/12/2012 13:02

Rail ticket/ airfare definitely. I spent a summer in my 20s traveling on the trains on a shoestring budget (my mother actually let me choose whether I wanted an airfare or a sofa for my student apartment - I didn't pick the sofa Wink). I've gotten to travel constantly after that too, but during those early trips you really meet people, fall in love, experience new places for the very first time etc etc - priceless.

A lot of young people I know do not wear watches any more, just their phones.
