Hair that doesn't grow past a certain length?

HaveAGoodDay · 15/12/2012 22:07

Right! Is it possible my hair is incapable of growing past a certain length now? I say now because it has been longer in the past. I'm nearing 40. I've been on some meds for the last 2 years which I noticed caused a lot of hair loss & thinning of hair. I also colour my hair a lot, I don't bleach it, just brown semis or permanent colours.

I go for a trim approx every 3 months or so. I straighten my hair probably twice a week at the most. It just seems as though, for a while now that my hair has remained at the same length. I have tried the Lee Stafford hair growth treatment, which I found, slightly promising, however dried out my hair something awful. The shampoo & conditioner in the same range were ghastly! so can hair have a 'cut' off point where it just stops growing? Maybe it stops/slows down at a certain age? Can anyone advise? I want my long hair back!!!

Can't advise but mine is pretty much the same. For years I've had a lot of lengths but I'm now trying to grow it all to the one length in the hope of making it look thicker. I have it trimmed straight across the bottom every 6-8 weeks and a trim from the lengths every 12 wks +, but it just feels like its still the same length it was years ago!! Obv it is growing as I have awful roots after 3-4 weeks and my fringe grows but I just can't see a difference in the over all length.

I'm usually a blonde, but have switched to darker brown to avoid the bleach for a while and try get my hair into good condition. I am anaemic since having dd a year ago but I'm terrible for remembering to take iron tablets.

If you hear of any miracle product, pass it on Grin

I'm another in the same position. Did the Lee Stafford hair growth treatment do anything?

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 16/12/2012 11:06

I used it for a while but can't honestly say if it made a difference. It did make my hair feel very soft, but that was about it

Am in the same boat. Have been growing my hair from short graduated bob for the last year. It is now at collar bone length. In the same time, my hairdressers has gone from the same length to past her bra strap! The only good side of this is that it's saving me a fortune in trims/cuts. But am despairing of it getting much further than this. Maybe someone will come along with something fantastic we can all slap on/take. I am on lots of medication and am menopausal so doubt these are helping in my case.

SledsImOn · 16/12/2012 19:28

Mine's the same...it gets to the level of my bra strap adjusters and stops.

I know it's growing from the top as the roots change, (have been using up old packets of cheapo dye from the cabinet, nothing hardcore, and they barely change it anyway!) but it never gets any longer.

I am the same age as you OP. But it's been like this for several years now and I'm not on meds either. I've just given up on the idea of having proper long hair, ever.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 16/12/2012 21:27

Yup, mine is just above my bra strap. I have a photo from about 7 years ago and it was so much longer. No idea what's happened!!
I'm slightly younger at 27

fizzypops · 16/12/2012 21:58

everyone's hair has a 'terminal length.' So it might stop at the shoulders for one person, bra strap length on another, while some can grow the to the floor! It just depends.

the idea of trimming hair every 6 weeks to "help it grow" doesn't really work - most people's hair will grow 1/2 inch to an inch in that time - if you keep chopping it off it'll never get longer! the only benefit of trimming is getting rid of dry or split ends which might otherwise get worse and break off higher up the hair shaft. instead of a full trim, buy a cheap pair of haircutting scissors and go through sections of your hair, cutting off individual strands which are split. this gets rid of unhealthy hair without losing length.

other things = be nice to your hair! cut down of use of straighteners, try not to wash it every day, COCONUT OIL! (a tiny bit on the ends every day), don't drag brushes through it -use a wide tooth comb- and pure boar bristle brushes are meant to be best to help smooth the natural oils through the hair (hoping for one for Christmas!)

Could also try hair & nail vitamins, some people take Biotin supplements which is supposed to increase growth.

Prolificmincepiebreeder · 16/12/2012 22:37

Good advice fizzy, I'll look into those supplements.

Debs75 · 16/12/2012 22:41

My hair doesnt grow nicely. It used to be longer than my bra strap but it was ratty and very thin after having dc3&4.
I have since had it cut to shoulder level and coloured and it looks so good I am wary of growing it longer. Since August it has grown 2", had it coloured yesterday and you could see the obvious growth. It is much healthier now though so will be keeping an eye on it.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 17/12/2012 00:41

Good advice Smile

I've read online about most people having a 'length' that their hair tends to stop at. After so much of my hair falling out when dd was born a year ago, I've tried to take much better care of it. Thankfully, the front where the majority fell out has now almost grown back, and I feel now its in decent condition. I've started using argon oil before a using hair dryer and occasionally a wee bit on the ends. I have 2 different brands of shampoo/conditioner on the go that I alternate with and every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks I use a deep clean shampoo and conditioner to remove product build up.

I guess the idea for me with having a trim every 6-8 weeks is to stop the split ends. When I say a trim though, it's really just a quick skim with the scissors. Not really taking any of the length off

SledsImOn · 17/12/2012 06:28

Thankyou Fizzy - that explains a lot!

I never use a dryer or straighteners on mine, but I do get split ends. Might try some oil on the ends and see if it helps. I don't tend to use conditioner either as it seems to make it very flat and oily.

Pregnancy seems to be good for it, in terms of volume at least, but then i always seem to cut it all off after having the baby as it looks crap again! NOT this time...I have made ds1 promise to stop me if I get hold of the scissors Smile

It's taken it 5 years to get long again...and short does not suit me.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/12/2012 08:24

I take brewers yeast and kelp tablets for hair growth.

MSM is good too but will make you a bit spotty for the first few days you take it.

It's worth taking a multivitamin too.

I've seen Nioxin (hair growth stuff, saw Alex Curran papped with it) in TK Maxx.

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 17/12/2012 08:29

Yes, definitely possible.

Each hair follicle grows hair for a certain amount of time then drops it and starts again.

If your hair only has a two-year cycle you will not be able to grow more than about 12 inches of hair.

Prolificmincepiebreeder · 17/12/2012 17:38

mummyduck what deep clean shampoo do you use? I need one!

Umberto Giannini Spa Rituals Detoxifying shampoo and conditioner. It's pricy but I got it when boots were doing 3 for £10 so got those and a root hair spray thing! Says it can be used daily, but I use it weekly Smile

HaveAGoodDay · 17/12/2012 20:50

Wow, thanks for the replies, and keep them coming if more words of wisdom can be passed on!!!

It's frustrating isn't it ladies when all you want is longer hair.
