Racing outfit dilemma

I'm going to a race day before Chrismtas. We have tickets for all areas so the posh and not posh bits. The posh bits a re no jeans but the not posh bits also include some outside attractions and I'm guessing it's going to be FREEZING!!! So any ideas what I can wear that is suitable for everything? It will be a family day so don't want to be totting around in the cold in a dress and heels.

Boots, thick coat, thick tights, layers and a hat.

I dont think I have a thick coat Sad and would you realyl wear tights - with a skirt I assume?! I think my legs would be really chilli in a skirt. Do you think leggings and a long jumper would be ok?

Whistles do some really comfy warm jumper/sweat fabric dresses which are really flattering if you have to take your coat off on the day and you can, of course wear it over Christmas. Great with thick black tights and flat boots. Wear a thick coat, nice gloves and a snood scarf (Topshop do great ones - dont be put off that it is Topshop - they are good quality and plain design) You will look fantastic./emo/tch/1.gif

Which racecourse are you going to? (I work in racing)

Generally at this time of year everyone is layered up. The Jumps fraternity are known as the "tweed and welly boot brigade" for a very good reason!

Unless it is one of the big meetings, you don't need to wear a dressy hat - most women won't. However a warm furry hat wouldn't be a bad idea!

These pictures from the Cheltenham Festival - probably the dressiest event in the Jumps calendar - will give you a good idea of the kind of style people wear to the winter game. However, it is the extreme end.

Whatever you do, don't go dressed as if you're going to Royal Ascot - you will freeze!

Ummmm it's either Ascot or Windsor I think, it's a day aimed at families

It'll be Ascot - Windsor are a Flat course, so only race March to October.

Ascot is a bit different - psychologically people like to dress up for Ascot. The huge grandstand is a lonely wind-swept place during the winter so definitely make sure you are well wrapped up, whatever you wear!

Oh my work Frankelstein - I'm going to freeze aren't I!!! I'm told the kids will be ok in jeans - but they both have chino's which will be ok right?!?!?

I'm going to have to have a serious think on how to retain the most warmth whilst still looking nice!

Frankelstein · 14/12/2012 16:15

The kids will be fine like that - just make sure they have gloves/scarves too!

I find the best method is to wear lots of layers and cover it up with a nice coat!

Whatever the weather, you'll have fun!

sweetheart · 14/12/2012 16:15

I have a pair of black coated trousers - sort of leather ish effect do you think they would be ok with a pair of heeled boots?

OP posts:
Frankelstein · 14/12/2012 16:16

X-posted with you there! Yes they sound fine - maybe a pair of tights underneath Wink

sweetheart · 14/12/2012 16:19

ha ha oh god - you're scaring me now. I feel the cold really badly, I have my own heater under my desk at work.

You'll be fine, there is shelter in the grandstand plus plenty of coffee stalls.
