Ack, 'smart casual' Christmas party...worried about over/underdressing

It's DP's work Christmas party next week, and partners are invited. It's a sit down three course meal at quite a fancy hotel and it's Christmas, so I've been outfit planning on the basis of dressing up a bit. An email went out to all attendees this afternoon saying that the dresscode is 'smart casual', and now I'm fretting that what I'm planning isn't right. Anyone able to give me opinions?

I was planning to wear this dress, which I bought for a summer wedding this year. I love it and I haven't had a chance to wear it since, so would really love a chance to give it another outing!

I have a black knitwear bolero to go over it to stop my arms freezing and have bought some fairly dainty, non-chunky mid heel ankle boots for footwear. Was going to get some tights, not sure on colour/texture/pattern yet.

Would this be ok? I'm sure it'll look good, just not sure it'll be the right level of dressy...I'm crap with this stuff!

Looks perfect!

Ankle boots - not sure with floaty dress - have you got shoes that would look ok?

IME smart casual for a Christmas works do means the men don't need to wear a tie, but the women will be dressed up for the party of the year.

The dress is lovely, but unless you're (unlike me) very edgy, I think more "traditional" party shoes would be better than ankle boots.

Me too .

Yeah, I'm not 100% on the ankle boots but for medical reasons I really can't do traditional party shoes - I spend the rest of the year in kneehigh lace up chunky boots no matter what the weather so this was the most reasonable compromise I could come up with :S I can't find a picture online but I bought the most dainty, elegant ones I could find and I think it's probably just going to have to do... Glad you all think the dress is ok though!

I think it sounds lovely, and the ankle boots will dress it down, I'd add a chunky-ish black necklace too personally. And count yourself lucky - mine's Xmas party is Hawaiian themed Hmm

Hawaiian themed?! At Christmas? What are they smoking? I feel better about mine now...

Yes definitely chunkyish nor sparkly type necklace to dress it down a bit.

LondonElfInFestiveCheerBoots · 12/12/2012 17:29

Yeaaahhhh, Hawaiian. Last years was lovely and classic and formal apparently, but that was pre me of course! I'm wearing a flowery dress and a 'Don't fuck with me' expression Xmas Grin

Tone down the sparkle on the jewellery, got it. That shouldn't be a problem, what my wardrobe lacks in variety, my box o'shiny things makes up for....
