Face cream for my mum

tkband3 · 10/12/2012 22:57

My mum wants a new day and/or night cream for Christmas. I'd like to get her a really good one, but haven't the first clue about what's good and what's not! I use Oil of Olay Blush, which works fine for me...

DM is 72 and has, I think, fairly good skin, with some discolouration here and there. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good face cream for her? She doesn't often have a specific present request like this and wouldn't dream of spending more than a fiver herself (ridiculously generous for other people, but tight thrifty where she's concerned!), so I want to treat her Smile.

Clarins Extra Firming Day cream is gorgeous. Feels like a real treat and does a great job.

Fab, thanks for the recommendation.

I would also recommend Clarins Super Restorative cream for an older skin. Perhaps go to a Clarins counter, describe you Mums skin to them and see which of their range they recommend. They have boxed sets with free extras in at this time of year too.

L'Occitane divine immortelle. ££££s (about £60) but gets rave reviews. I have bought my 69 yr old mum a pot for Christmas (from QVC on 3 x easy pay installments)

Otherwise the L'occitane site has loads of code offers which IIRC would net you a bag of goodies worth about £25 if you spent the amount you would need to on the cream.

I had a sample and it did feel very divine indeedy.

Otherwise Elemis is the bollocks and 20% off their official site or various discounts on sets from feelunique/salonskincare etc.

Elemis pro collagen marine is lovely. I use it and I've got my 85 year old mum hooked on it too.

polyhymnia · 11/12/2012 16:00

I second the Elemis recommendation. Like Clarins, they are very good. They sometimes have some good 'extras' of their other products included, like Clarins.

Not a huge fan of L'Occitane in general, but know the Immortelle cream has received great reviews.

I also love the products of By Terry at Space NK, but they are £££ and not as easy to track down as Clarins or Elemis if your mum wnats to explore more of the range.

I bloody love my new Liz earle one

polyhymnia · 11/12/2012 16:29

I think Liz Earle stuff is a bit marmite-y - you either love it or, like me, are not a fan at all. I've found the 'brand' strong but the products generally a disappointment.

Also unsure sure how much the products are aimed at the older skin or at 'yummy mummies'. But that may be totally unfair - after all, everyone's skin (and tastes in terms of texture, fragrance, etc) is different and it could be that some older people would love LE.

Amblin · 11/12/2012 16:34

I just love the smell. Tbh am a big sceptical of all creams

dexter73 · 11/12/2012 17:03

That's funny about the LE cream because I hate the smell. I find all of her stuff a bit meh tbh. I usually buy whatever is on offer in Boots. Am using a No.7 cream at the moment. It is fine.

anniewoo · 11/12/2012 17:58

I dislike the Liz Earle cream smell too.
Liked Elemis Marine Collagen but £££'. Bought on the recommendation of Mrs.Martin the skin cream expert on Mumsnet who has since disappeared.
The new Avon wonder cream has destroyed my skin.
Clarins Day cream nice too.
The Olay regenerist in the red jar is good also. Check out the website Paula's Choice - she reviews beauty products or check out The Beauty Bible - rates so many creams. Really worth a look and there is an anti ageing beauty bible book too. Newby Hands in Harper's always gives great advice too.she rates Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair. Tho it didn't get rid of my wrinkles sadly!!

noddyholder · 11/12/2012 18:06

I don't like the liz earle cream either but love the cleanser and superbalm.I have never known anyone not like the smell of decleor and it seems to have 'powers' Grin

noddyholder · 11/12/2012 18:07

I am currently using l'oreal youth code luminize which smells divine and makes your skin very even looking.

tkband3 · 11/12/2012 18:12

Oh wow! Loads more ideas... Will check out those review sites and then head for HoF in my lunch hour on Thursday (and see who's doing the best freebies Wink.

Thanks so much all.

i normally am supplied by MIl with anything on offer in Boots
u have good skin and have never ever noticed any of them working better than the other

noddyholder · 11/12/2012 18:21

Some of them have oils and reflectors that give a bit of a glow. But yes good skin is genetic and keeping it moisturised with anything esp spf is key.
