The love of my perfume life is the original Bulgari Omnia (the one with the brown packaging). However, it has been discontinued and I'm wondering how long I'll be able to buy it online for. Also, it doesn't last too well and I'm looking for a change.

To give you an idea of what I also like:

Prada Amber (am wearing it at the moment).
Guerlain Samsara (wore it all through my teens).
Guerlain Shalimar (I quite like it, although I prefer a deeper, headier base).

Not keen on anything too floral or girly. I like my perfumes to smell a little bit filthy Grin

I have both MKK and Fumerie Turque. Both are by Serge Lutens.
Sexy, ballsy unique perfumes for people who know what they like. They can be divisive too.

You might or might not like FT - it has a strong Middle Eastern vibe, when I wear it I think of hookahs and thick carpets and whatever goes on in a harem Wink

MKK is divisive and many people find it scary. On me it's a surprisingly gentle musk that has a few twists and surprises.

I find Lutens perfumes are extremely evocative - short films in a bottle. I don't want to wear them out on the street or in a noisy department store - for me they are something to enjoy at home in the evening - to get all the nuances. So definitely worth ordering some samples home.

Serge Lutens doesn't actually create his own perfumes - he comes up with ideas ('artistic direction') professional perfumers do them for him. Most of his great ones were actually created by Chris Sheldrake, an Englishman who grew up in India (who is also, I think, the father of Chanel's sublime Coromandel that many MNers love).

Tabu is very cheap but is surprisingly good and has great provenance. The story goes that the perfumer's brief was "Make something a whore would wear". That was back then - nowadays that we have shops full of truly trashy perfumes, Tabu smells actually quite classy (Guerlains, considered some of the classiest perfumes around these days, were also originally favored by courtesans and demimondaines. Think La dame aux camelias). Some versions of it also come in an outrageous violin-shaped bottle. Perfect for anyone who is into kitsch Wink

Oh and Hypnotic Poison (almondy gourmand) has nothing whatsover in common with the original Poison (scary candy-tuberose - I perversely quite like it, but it is a weapon of mass destruction).

Pinkforever · 10/12/2012 17:13

I came on to reccomend either Knowing or Cinnabar by estee lauder but see someone beat me to it! I recently treated myself to Shalimar but I dont think its sexy enough for me! I am going to get myself a bottle of Dior Addict for xmas as I find it lasts and lasts....

Maraki · 10/12/2012 17:52

Fracas, Shalimar, Angel

crazybutterflylady · 10/12/2012 18:15

I think the original agent provocateur smells really filthy, tried that??

IsaXMASbelleRinging · 10/12/2012 18:41

I love Calvin Clein Euphoria, it is very sweet and warm, an oriental vanillary scent.

auldspinster · 10/12/2012 18:45

Agent Provcateur Strip is filthy - bought unsniffed and tried it during the day and didn't get it then tried again in the evening and it made perfect sense.

coffeeinbed · 10/12/2012 19:17

Strip is brilliant indeed, but I thought they stopped making in.
Very much a dirty evening one.

Havingkittens · 10/12/2012 19:21

I'm a Serge Lutens lover too. Don't know where you're based but they sell them in Liberty's. My personal favorites are 5 O'Clock au Gingembre and Feminite Du Bois.

Fuckitthatlldo · 10/12/2012 22:16

Oh I'm really excited that you can buy small samples for so little from that website! A proper chance to wear a perfume for a couple of days to see if it suits you rather than just a quick squirt in a shop.

Are there websites like that where you can buy small samples of more mainstream perfumes too?

All the niche perfumes above are probably your best bet.
You could also try Creed perfumes. Am thinking Santal imperial & cuir de Russie.

Some old fashioned mainstream suggestions:
Obsession by calvin klein
Aromatics elixir clinique
Mitsouko & l'heure bleue guerlain
Dune lancome

DonaAna · 11/12/2012 07:22

You can buy some mainstream samples from eBay and Surrender to Chance. Perfumistas are generally not as into purchasing them as mainstream perfumes are easy to sample instore and cheap to buy off eBay. Unfortunately, many mainstream perfumes are very generic and poorly made these days (skimpy budgets, no natural ingredients) and this is why I became a niche perfume lover. I tend to get a lot of free mainstream samples but don't usually find the time and motivation to use them (there are a few exceptions, the Shalimar lites for example).

Aromatics Elixir is great - Mitsouko too, but I really prefer the extrait de parfum concentration.

DonaAna · 11/12/2012 07:58

PS Have you checked Ebay.de for vintage Omnia? It's often the best place to find discontinued perfumes, most sellers will ship abroad if you ask nicely.

WayneDeer · 11/12/2012 11:30

i don't think aromatics elixir smells in anyway filthy
different, pungent but not filthy

Fuckitthatlldo · 11/12/2012 13:03

Haven't tried Agent Provocateur - will have a sniff next time I'm in HOF. Dona I do get my original vintage Omnia online, although not necessarily from Ebay. It is the most beautiful perfume I have ever smelt, although for some reason does not last, or smell quite at its best on me. I am the sort of person perfumes can smell awful on even though they smell great on everyone else. Typical.

Sorry to resuscitate an old thread, just wondering if Fuckitthatlldo ever found a good replacement for original Omnia, also one of my favourites but with crap lasting power on my skin too

cardamomginger · 14/04/2013 00:57

Ormonde Jayne Tolu? This is a gorgeous amber - if you like Prada Amber, you might like this one.

whataboutbob · 14/04/2013 11:19

Amouage ( Omani perfume house, fragrances designed by French perfumers) does warm spicy oriental like no one else. My favourite is Lyric ( based on rosé) it s expensive mind. I worked extra hours at my hospital to buy a bottle. Only available in afew stores ( Harrods, self ridges etc).

SirToffeeDoris · 14/04/2013 17:08

Cardamomginger: Funnily enough, it is the only Ormonde Jayne perfume that I haven't had the chance to smell yet. My little sister bought me the sample set a few years ago, and Tolu wasn't included as they had run out of sample sizes of it. I did buy Woman from the range, which was lovely until I spilt it all over a handbag and sickened myself with too much of a good thing.

whataboutbob: I had never heard of that range, but they sound lovely. You are absolutely not kidding about them being expensive, however Shock Grin I might have to treat myself to a sample from Les Senteurs, as there are no stockists up here in the wild Northlands (Glasgow). And then hope that I hate it as it is so pricey ;)

whataboutbob · 14/04/2013 20:59

Definitely, I got a sample too from les senteurs . Get 2 if you can, or a mix of different samples as they are small. Also they don't have an atomiser so don t do what I did, and spill half the bottle on 1st use. Nahema by guerlain is also a rose fragrance and someone posted they had found guerlains on discount in super drug.
