Spot cream that actually works?

Can anyone recommend one? I've tried clean and clear, neutragena (sp?) and freederm and they all do NOTHING!

Quinoderm is fab, it's the only thing I've tried that actually works. I've tried many of these suggestions too, and have to say that a lot of them (eg. toothpaste, sudocrem) make my spots worse! here - I urge anyone who hasn't to try it, it's so inexpensive too and lasts for ages.

doing an aspirin face mask. crush about 5 normal aspirin and add a little water to make a paste, put it on the spot or use as a mask. It's salycyclic (sp) acid so works brilliantly!

The version I was told is to crush the tabs and mix with honey to make the paste (for antibacterial properties) and use as a mask.

Oldie but goodie and cheap - Ponds shine control.

FiercePanda · 11/12/2012 10:13

Another vote for Quinoderm! I used it through my teens to deal with my hellish acne (thanks, PCOS). It's the only cream that's ever worked for me. It does dry out your skin, though, so a non-greasy moisturiser is essential. It also bleached my skin a bit, in the sense that my face used to be covered in dark brown freckles, and now they're only visible if I've been out in the sun too long. I kinda miss my freckle face, though...

I used to use PanOxyl 2.5 which made my skin lovely but it has been taken off the market - it is milder than Quinoderm which made me itch. Since then I've struggled with spots again. Confused

Quinoderm is good but they do get worse before they get better! It also bleaches pillow cases/duvets which cant really be a good thing but it does work in the long run. I've had spots (bad breakouts) for a couple of years now and on a recent trip to the doctor to get more contraceptive pills the doctor told me that the ones i was on were notorious for causing acne, got something new and have noticed a big difference. So keep that in mind.

Dancergirl · 11/12/2012 12:58

Quinoderm seems to be out do stock/unavailable everywhere! Where do you get it?

does Quinoderm work for horrible under the skin spots which are more like lumps, and which take ages to come to a head? if at all? and then leave a scar for ever and a day?

WayneDeer · 11/12/2012 13:31

that sounds like cystic acne
you have to see a gp and ideally a dermatologist

loubielou31 · 11/12/2012 14:49

I'll repeat the earlier mentioned Germolene but the older fashioned pink ointment (I think the tube has more yellow on it just to be confusing) I think works better that the other kind. (both help)
It only works on spots you've already got, it doesn't prevent them in any way. I use clinique 3 step stuff which really helps keep my skin in check but I still get some spots.
I like the idea of the aspirin face mask. I think it would work well. (I gargle with aspirin at the first sign on tonsilitis.)

Duac Cream

Requires prescription, which you can get here: www.dred.com/uk/treatment-for-acne.html

Sad to see Quinoderm so hard to get these days. Can you get it at all these days ? I should get some. I had it all through my teens and 20's and it was FAB.

Varya · 11/12/2012 17:51

Surgical spirit applied with a cotton bud dries out spots rapidly.

TidyDancer · 11/12/2012 18:45

Sudocrem is the most amazing yet overlooked spot treatment there is. The stuff is bloody magical.

Failing that, the only other one I've come across that works is an Anatomicals one (I think it's called zapper, or something like that, it's a double ended tube type thing).

BOFingSanta · 11/12/2012 18:50

Duac, definitely. It's well worth going to the GP, for all the reasons up there ^.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 11/12/2012 19:13

lots of quinoderm products on amazon, face wash etc. think Boots still do it from chemist counter not on the shelf.

Wrigglebum · 11/12/2012 20:01

Another vote for toothpaste- works best on juicy whitehead type spots. For under the skin ones then quinoderm.

What are you washing with? Some washes strip the skin and make you produce too much oil, leading to spots. I started using Origins Clean Energy in the evening and just water in the morning and I hardly get spots now. It's an oil wash and rather expensive at £19 but my last bottle lasted about 14 months.

Pinkush · 11/12/2012 20:25

Another vote for Quinoderm for over the counter remedies. If your skin isn't improving then your GP could prescribe Aknemycin= a combo of a retinoid which acts as a peeling/drying agent in a similar way to benzoyl peroxide, plus an antibiotic. Basically, for stubborn spots you need something to kill the bugs AND something to strip the grease, ideally in one product. Allow each new treatment at least 1-2 months before switching to something new as they do take a little while for your skin to get used to. Good luck!

Cerealqueen · 11/12/2012 21:52

Quinoderm - but it bleaches your clothes and pillowcases and sheets - beware!
Clearasil 4 hr ultra - really works fast, apply 2/3 times in the day and the redness will go down, really good stuff
Long term prevention - A microdermabrasion flannel off ebay

paneer · 11/12/2012 21:59

Sudocream for just 1 big massive spot, or for ache breakouts??

Whizpuff · 11/12/2012 22:17

Dr Nick Lowe spot gel (from Boots) has cured me of adult acne-I've been spot free for three years after a VERY long battle, and will never again use anything else.

timtam23 · 11/12/2012 22:45

Another vote for Quinoderm and it's definitely still available, I bought some fairly recently, from Boots, but you have to ask at the pharmacy counter, it's not out on the shelves in the main shop

MordionAgenos · 11/12/2012 22:47

It's not, you know. I tried to buy some today for Dd1, after reading this thread, and the pharmacist told me that there was a problem with the suppliers and no Boots anywhere had it now (cos I asked specifically if it was just that store that didn't have any - having a lady noted all the 'out of stock' messages on the Internet). :(
