Can I grow my fine hair long?

superstarheartbreaker · 29/11/2012 22:38

My hair is fine, quite thin and flyaway but quite pretty nontheless. I soooo envy all those georgeous girls with flowing locks. Especially thick flowing locks. My hair is fairly long now but layered and feathered at the front. I am trying to grow out the layers as they are thining. I am going to have a trim. I once had my hair cut into a short bob which was cute for a bit but I did miss the length. Plus I hate growing it out. I want to keep my hair longish as it dosn't look too scraggy but how can I boost volume and keep it looking healthy? I am not ready to let go of my long locked dreams yet. Is babyliss big hair ok?

How old are you?

I'm oldish, tried it, and gave up, sadly.

I was exactly the same Super, loved the look, but alas with my fine hair it just doesnt work on me. Went through all the pain of growing it out, but it just never looked how I had hoped and I kept putting it up in a ponytail of some sort, because I just dont have the time available on a daily basis to make it look like it did when I came out of the salon.

In the end I got so frustrated that I have had it cut again - in a style which makes the most of its texture and type and doesnt take me forever to do in the morning when I am short of time, but still looks good with minimal effort.

I think it comes down to you can have pretty much whatever style you want, although it is harder if your hair doesnt 'suit' the style because of its natural characteristics of texture etc, but you can compensate for a lot with the many products available, but you need to be prepared to take (and have) the time to do it.

Go and have a chat with your hairdresser and see what s/he recommends and be honest with yourself about how much time you have to style it each time you wash it. Good luck - look forward to an update on what you decide!

Yes you can - I did recently, after years of having a bob, and I did enjoy the length. It took more work to look decent and not straggly (and my hair isn't super fine, just fine-medium with a lot of waves) so I did end up putting it up a lot. But I worked out some good ways of piling it up in a big bun so it didn't look thin. I've recently gone back to a bob with a full fringe though and I love it, it looks super thick for once.

Babyliss Big Hair isn't amazing IMO (I prefer to use a GHD ceramic barrel brush and my hairdryer), but you should give Babyliss Ceramic Heated Rollers a go - they give it loads of body and are really quick and easy to use once you get the hang of it.

And def carry on growing out the layers, and always ask for the ends to be blunt cut, not chipped into (why are hairdressers so obsessed with cutting out huge chunks of my already fine hair, grrr).

GrimmaTheNome · 30/11/2012 11:27

Mines fine but plenty of it - using volumising products really does make a difference to how it looks. There's loads of them.

PetFox · 30/11/2012 11:33

That's true Grimma, I really recommend Kerastase Volumactiv spray or Aveda Pure Abundance style prep - expensive but make a visible difference on my hair. The cheaper ones I've tried didn't do anything.

Also, use a clarifying shampoo occasionally so your hair is light and bouncy and has no product build up on it.

singaporeswing · 30/11/2012 11:36

I have fine hair but a lot of it. What has really made a difference to me in growing my wispy bob out to long thick hair has been washing it only once a week and not using any heat on it whatsoever. I think I have blowdried it once in about a year or so.

GrimmaTheNome · 30/11/2012 11:39

The cheaper ones do enough for me Grin
yy to clarifying type shampoo. I'm currently using the Tresemme deep cleansing, with Andrew Barton volume conditioner. Not even needing the various mousses/sprays at the moment.

PetFox · 30/11/2012 11:44

Agree with that too singapore - try not to wash it and heat style it everyday OP, and do a raw coconut oil mask once a week.

Djembe · 30/11/2012 12:21

Agree with advice above - weekly deep treatment with coconut oil is ace, makes my fine fluffy hair seem thicker, shinier and stronger. My hair never seems to grow past my shoulders as I have bleach highlights and use GhDs far too much! Am trying to wean myself off heat styling during the week and just blow-dry and straighten on a Friday for the weekend. Am a SAHM though so noone cares what I look like in the week

BigBoobiedBertha · 30/11/2012 12:32

Another one here with fine hair but lots of it. I wouldn't grow out the layers personally. When I have no layers my hair is as flat as a pancake and not good. Every hairdresser wants to layer it for body too. It works for me. I suppose it depends on how you style it though.

I do agree that you shouldn't wash it every day. Mine is every other. By the end of day 2 it is starting to look dirty but it gets very fly away if I wash every day and it loses its shine.

Mine is just past my shoulders and for me, as long as I can put it up that is fine. I like the idea of longer hair but the reality falls a long way short so I have to be content with what I have.

And just to look on the bright side, it seems everybody had long hair these days so it is nice to be a bit different I reckon. I really notice and appreciate those who decide to go shorter and have an interesting cut.

Plus, can you imagine drying long thick hair?! Shock I am quite grateful I can blast mine with a hair dryer for a couple of minutes and it is done. No hanging around with wet hair in the mornings.

LittlePandaBear · 30/11/2012 16:27

I also have fine flyaway shoulder length hair, and would love it long and bouncy but it's just not in it's nature! I get too many split ends (the highlights don't help with that) and need to have it cut every 2 or 3 months or it's too raggedy. Whenever I'm tempted to let it grow more, I think do I want shorter, nicer hair or longer, horrible ratty hair? So I pick the haircut!

I do wash it and blow dry it every day though, it feels too greasy to leave it any longer. I onnly use straighteners on rare nights out though as it's straight already.

I'm at the hairdressers tomorrow for a trim and will no doubt end up with my usual boring style. What else can i do with it?!

BehindLockNumberNine · 30/11/2012 18:05

I too have fine, useless, greying hair.
Have recently had it cut short (as in very short layered bob) but am now grying to grow it. It is just about halfway inbetween my chin and my shoulders now and most of the layers are now out.

Can't afford to have it re-coloured at the moment so will have to embrace the dull brown with grey bits for a while.

Feeling very meh about it. Would love to grow it long and luxurious but I fear that will never happen. The volume is just not there Sad

EarlyInTheMorning · 30/11/2012 18:10

Not a lot to add that hasn't already been said, but just to confirm, as tried and tested: good volumising shampoo and conditioner (for me, Sebastian) and don't ever allow hairdressers to feather your hair. Layers, maybe one, but long and choppy.

PetFox · 30/11/2012 18:13

Yes, long layers are good, as long as the ends are blunt and the layers are 'light', ie just in the top layer of your hair and don't involve chopping a lot of the weight out of the rest of your hair. Sorry, not sure if that makes sense? My hairdresser called them 'disconnected' layers - they leave out the underneath of your hair so that there is still some weight there and the ends look thicker.

Mewsical · 30/11/2012 20:47

BBH is OK for a bit of oomph and it does make an amazing difference to the look of my hair. With a hairdryer, the ends seems to curl outwards and with it being fine and flyaway it adds to the candyfloss nature of my hair. I would rather it be sleek.
A really light, but good, conditioner is what makes the most difference to my hair. Unfortunately it is Sebastian products, but most others weigh it down.
I'm a daily washer, otherwise I have to wear a hat it gets so greasy and flat.

Mewsical · 30/11/2012 20:49

I would love long, bouncy, wavy hair but healthy and shiny is probably all that I can achieve.

superstarheartbreaker · 30/11/2012 23:56

Hi all. Went and had a trim today. He cut blunt which already looks better as the wispyness is gone. I rekon a zlot of ladies with long hair have extentions right ? ;-)

Forget any product that claim to help fine hair be thicker or grow longer. If that's what you have that's it for the rest of your life. Crappy hair, won't grow any longer. It just won't. Waste your money on claims otherwise, but that is what you are doing. My hair is fine and if it's not layered and tonged and hairsprayed it is flat and lifeless. I have gone from washing and styling every day to washing once a week and guess what - it has made no difference. Still doesn't grow. Products that thicken actually only coat the hair strand and flake off like dandruff. I don't have the face for a short/shaven head, but wish I did because it would have saved me 50 years of trying to get my hair to be something it never can be with or without products.
