To pixie cut or not to pixie cut? That is indeed the question.

This is my present dilemma - a couple of years ago, I had my hair cut into a pixie style, very short but with a sweepy fringe (think Keira Knightley circa 2010/11). Then I decided to grow it out, partly because I got 'lesbian' comments from some people Hmm and partly because I just fancied a change.

I've been looking through some photos recently and I reeeally like my short hair. It's just past shoulder-length now and I just seem to wear it up most of the time. Part of me really likes to swiiissshhh Grin but the pixie cut looked a bit... more interesting?

Could somebody please come and help me be less indecisive? Thanks

If you have got the kind of face that can carry off a pixie cut then you are lucky and should definitely go for it (I end up looking like Moonface out of the Faraway Tree) because it frames you in a way that just tying your hair back does not - there is an added dimension from the structure of the cut.

BunnyLebowski · 28/11/2012 23:21

If you want it then get it done! You can always grow it back again if you get bored!

As for the lesbian comments, people said that to your face?? Shock How charming they sound!!

The other way to decide is to post pics on here and we'll tell you which you look best with Grin

BeatTheClock · 28/11/2012 23:28

I do like short hair on the right face. Mine was v short for years but omg it's a pita to grow out now I want it longer.

MsGoldblum · 29/11/2012 00:08

Bunny I seem to have a way of attracting all the strange folk Grin
Hmm, I'd really like to go for it again, but as you say, it's such a pain if you want to grow it out again. You have to cope with the mullet stage and the funny little ear bits Hmm
I think I shall have a chat with my hairdresser and see what he recommends...

Pixie cuts work best on cheekboney faces I think.

BOFingTheDude · 29/11/2012 00:29

If you like it, do it.

I think it works best on faces with good bone structure, but even that isn't a hard and fast rule.

deXavia · 29/11/2012 00:32

What about in between - I have a Meg Ryan sort of choppy short cut. By far the easiest and flattering hair style I've ever had. And if you decide to grow it out then you're almost already there on the funny ear bits.

DudeInaTutu · 29/11/2012 00:36

i am very jealous of anyone who can carry a pixie cut....i have never suited short hair. Sad due to having cheeks like a hamster
if you can carry it off and fancy a change then go for it!

EwanHoozami · 29/11/2012 08:43

they need a lot of care, have you got the time and cash for monthly trims?

they are also a bastard to grow out without looking like Paul McCartney.

SugaricePlumFairy · 29/11/2012 08:56

I'm currently loving Anne Hathaway's hair, god it is gorgeous.

I'm seriously tempted in the next few weeks to ask for something similar.

What's wrong with "looking" like a lesbian? Grin that's a compliment! Btw many many lesbians have long hair. It is your head, do what suits you.

femmeaufoyer · 29/11/2012 09:56

Do it. I love short hair on women...so stylish and different from the crowd. I too had mine cropped a few years back and got loads of compliments. I'm itching to chop it again as it's now shoulder length and layered. But I'm due with DC2 in 2 weeks and so for now I'm sticking to the easy-to-tie-up style! The only trouble with short hair is that it needs cutting a lot more regularly, and I know I won't have the time for a while. Absolutely love Anne Hathaways hair...and Michelle Williams.

BegoniaBigtoes · 29/11/2012 09:57

My hair is a bit like Anne Hathaway's in that pic - slightly longer at the sides. I love it (even without the face to match! :) ) and have almost always had short hair - long hair makes me look kind of droopy and flat, and it's greasy so needs washing every day - so no-brainer really.

If you want it to look feminine, ask to keep some flicky bits around the edges and keep the top longer so it's nice and shiny. Also IMO, if you are going to have quite short hair and want to look feminine, it helps to wear something a bit girly - something pink or decorated at the neckline, a necklace/earrings, and avoid high-necked clothes like turtlenecks. If you run out of the house with scrubbed face, fleece and jeans you do run a bit of a risk of looking like a man, especially if you're tall like me. That doesn't always bother me but I have noticed there's a big difference when you dress up a bit.

ceeveebee · 29/11/2012 10:06

Do it- I love my short hair, I think it looks much sharper than a boring bob and it takes no time to style in the morning. Its a bit like Dannie minogue's
The 1 hour every 5/6 weeks is worth it to save 30 mins every day!

BovineUddersAkimbo · 29/11/2012 10:36

Do it do it dot! I miss my short hair, like you I just chuck it up in a ponytail 99% of the time. Ginnifer Goodwin's haircut is gorgeous.

squoosh · 29/11/2012 10:37

God I hate Anne Hathaway! Ick.

But yes, Michelle Williams' hair is amazing! I love that 60's Jean Seberg look.

Caerlaverock · 29/11/2012 12:28

I love having short hair but yes I am quite cheekboney. I get it cut every 8 weeks but spend last 2 weeks itching to get it cut. I look younger with short hair and I love the convenience.

MsGoldblum · 29/11/2012 13:35

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anybody with the 'lesbian' comments. The Hmm was directed at the people who thought it was an insult, more than anything. Sorry Sad

Ewan I did look a lot like Paul McCartney during the growing-out stages - shortly after passing through the Justin Bieber phase...

I have a friend who is an actress and she always has her hair in a pixie cut (she is beautiful and has a long neck too) and she is usually cast as a lesbian. Such a cliche!

VoterColonelSebastianDoyle · 29/11/2012 14:28

I had exactly the same cut about 4 months ago and i loved it for about 2 weeks then i got pissed off with it. I couldnt keep up with the maintainance of it so im now growing it out. I really regret cutting my hair as it was halfway down my back. But if you love it that much get it done just make sure you wont regret it like i did! Good luck!

purplepenguin86 · 29/11/2012 15:42

I love my pixie - I had it cut from long last summer and have never really regretted it. This summer I decided i wanted a bob and started growing it but I got bored and now it's really short again. I am quite cheekboney I guess, and I have a long neck, and have never had any negative comments. If you like how you looked before with short hair then go for it - at least you know it suits you!
