This must sound so stupid to most of you but I havent been to London in 15 years and am going for a wee sightsee for 3 days in december.
What are people wearing in London? Im a bit "jeans scruffy" usually. (I am 47 if that helps re styles)

Whatever is warm and comfortable! Is freezing and wet today!
You see all sorts around where I work (Westminster). That is the wonderful thing about London, you wear couture or a bin bag and no one will bat an eye [helpful] enjoy your sightseeing!!

Absolutely anything you feel comfortable in.

I don't think London really has its own dress code! I wear the same here as anywhere else, e.g. Skinny jeans and jumper, dress tights and cardigan... Hope you have a good trip :)

I sort of see where you're coming from OP. I live in darkest Devon and had a lovely trip to London recently. We stayed in Soho - great for people watching! Here's what I noticed:

Scarves make you look effortlessly cool.
Where I live, bootcut jeans are everywhere. I didn't see ONE person sporting them in London. Jeans, yes, but skinny all the way, preferably rolled up an inch or so, with ankle boots.

This would be considered very directional in the sticks, where I live! :)

Lots of thin layers don't work in London - you get hot quickly inside shops, museums and on the tube. Best to wear a top/cardigan and a warm lightweight coat that you can unzip/take off. If you plan to spend hours on your feet, I would suggest wearing comfortable boots/shoes.

I can understand why you ask as a friend recently visited from York and asked us if she could wear an orange vest top. We couldn't really even understand the question (yes, you just put it on over your head and stick your arms through the arm holes!) but she said she couldn't wear something like this out where she lived, people would stare at her and make comments. Really anything goes here, like jam doughnut said, you could wear a bin bag and no-one would say anything.

Don't wear too many clothes - it is always boiling on the tube and in museums etc. And deffo wear comfortable shoes - I always end up walking miles, even if I'm just shopping or going to a couple of galleries. Dd1 has a light parka that is waterproof and something like that would be perfect, as it folds easily into a bag and means that you can shove the hood up and not have to faff around with brollies so much if it's raining. I'd go for something like that with a jumper underneath, skinny jeans or tights and a mini skirt and biker boots, plus a scarf which can stuff in a bag if too warm.

If you like jeans, they are perfect. Maybe wear them with some comfortable ankle boots or buy yourself a pair of wedge heeled ankle booties. They'd be comfortable to walk in and look good.

Don't wear too thick clothing- the temperature in London tends to be milder and all those buildings pumping out dry superheated air can soon make you feel dessicated and hot. Wear thinner lighter clothing and a coat/jacket that can be easily shrugged off/on. A thin scarf that can be folded and knotted looks good. I use a cross body bag or other such easily accessible and not easily pickpocketed bag when out and about in the city/any city. You'll need your hands free.

I also keep hair tied up and away from my neck as I hate getting hot and having hair sticking to my neck or getting tangled up in my scarves.

Basically you can wear what you like here and nobody bats an eye.
