don't want salesman round to give the hard sell if they're mega money

Depends what you think is mega money?

LynetteScavo · 21/11/2012 21:49

Lots of people in small houses have them so they can't be that expensive. I fancy some, but think they would look wrong in my house. Sad

ggirl · 21/11/2012 21:50

have you got them?
would you mind describing them and saying how much they cost.
mega money would be over £500 for one wondow

About £1k for a double width window when we got quotes. We went for an mdf shutter which looks like wood but is about 1/3 cheaper

ggirl · 21/11/2012 21:50

I have large bay window I would like them for , the curtains were a ridiculous amount

I've had them and will get them again. I think they're worth it, but my opinion of value for money may be very different from the op's

Sleepthief · 21/11/2012 21:54

Crossed posts. We paid £1600 for a bay of five windows and never ever regretted it. You will easily pay more than £500, but IMO you will never want to change it. The only reason I'm planning more is because we moved...

suntodayplease · 21/11/2012 21:55

Anything from £220 -£320 per sq m depending on finish and location from what I can gather. Have recently had these installed, really pleased with them. There are quite a few threads in property with various recommendations and companies to avoid. Hth

valiumredhead · 21/11/2012 21:56

Yes for a bay they are because that is effectively 3 windows.

ggirl · 21/11/2012 21:57

thanks that's about how much I thought a large bay would cost , is there much of a difference in the mdf to look at?

fishcalledwonder · 21/11/2012 21:57

Recently had them on front window, not bay, and was £500.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 21/11/2012 22:00

We have a few, but none in a large window like yours. Just taken delivery of two more today, in fact.
We go for the diy option as DH is pretty handy and hates paying for things he can do himself. Can't remember the price but the website here will give you a quick quote. They're really good about sending samples too.
They don't give the 'warm' look that curtains do, imo - and they do block out a bit of light. We've used them where privacy is needed.

suntodayplease · 21/11/2012 22:02

I couldn't tell the difference between mdf and wood (ours are white) I guess if you went for stripped wood effect it may be more obvious?

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 21/11/2012 22:11

Oh, you can get lots of different shades of white/cream with the California Company, and I think you can have custom colours as well.

ceeveebee · 21/11/2012 22:12

Ours are white mdf and look just like wood
You get much less choice of finish for the mdf ones but as we wanted white we didn't care
