What clothes for a 14 year old Australian girl?

MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 13:26

We will be spending Christmas in Oz and one relative who we have not seen for many years will be there with her 14 year old dd....according to MIL the DD loves clothes....what shall we buy for her?

It's hard because I don't know what she's into...are Aussie kids into Jack Wills and all that crap? What other shops? Budget is about £50....so that will probably buy one sock in Jack Wills!

I don't want to get vouchers.

Do you have any surf shops that sell Roxy or Billabong clothes? Unless you wait until you get to Australia as there are usually 2 or 3 in a shopping centre. I live in Perth & all the teenagers love those shops. My daughter is 9 & is just getting into it. They do bags, purses, pajamas & nice swim wear too as well as clothing. City beach has a website of you want to have a look on there to get an idea.

MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 14:28

Are they still into that then? Gosh it's been 7 years since I was last there...and they all liked that kind of thing then. Our local surf type shop shut last year... think the UK kids move on quicker or it's a case of the Aussies actually being real surfers!

She's looking a teeny bit quirky/emo on pictures that''s my only worry....she may be all Hmm at surfy clothes.

Any clothes I'm sure would be greatly appreciated, they are so expensive here. We are also in Perth and clothes/shoes tend to be 2.5 times the price of stuff in the UK

MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 14:29

Might be better to get her a Sports Girl voucher....it's just not terribly personal is it?

Mosman · 18/11/2012 14:30

I'd say it's more preppy, ralph lauren, jack wills stuff my DD is into, a bit of hollister if it's not emblazoned with the logo

MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 14:31

Oh I see Mosman yes...she'd get more for her money if I get them in the UK wouldn't she.

Perhaps I could just go for plainish inoffensive things....plain tops...hoody...PJs....do the kids over their like onsies? You know...all in one sleepsuits for adults? I know it's hot there now...but for the winter?

OP posts:
MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 14:31

Ah that's what I was thinking Mosman Holllister etc...

OP posts:
Mosman · 18/11/2012 14:33

Absolutely buy it in the UK and take it out. I wouldn't buy anything fleecey but jersey onies would i'm sure be a nice gift or a plain hoody type thing in navy or black my DD would wear, but not in pink iyswim

MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 14:35

So she won't be Hmm at a onsie then?

Mosman · 18/11/2012 14:52

I don't think so, as long as it's not too warm, even in July/Aug it was still warm enough to wear a summer nightie IMO

Notcontent · 18/11/2012 16:21

Hi - I am not an expert on teenage fashion but I am originally from oz and go back all the time. I really don't think a teenage girl who is into fashion would be into billabong stuff. How about something from topshop? Maybe you could ask her mum for ideas?

MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 22:33

Thanks Not I thought not! But I did wonder when someone suggested it as I know Oz is less fashiony than the UK. Im just going to check out Gilly Hicks thanks Corlan

I would probably get something quite British, from Topshop or All Saints.

I think that will probably be seen as very cool, over there.

I know it's quite dear, but what about this?

MrsCantSayAnything · 18/11/2012 23:42

Well now see....to me that looks like some old rag from Primark! I must be getting old but it does NOT look like nearly 50 quids worth of t shirt and I'm not getting that for her when she'll have no idea that it's a "good" brand! Grin

Having once been a vaguely quirky/emo-ish teenager in Australia I can certainly say that (a) any surfy will make her recoil (b) anything London-ish would be ideal (c) you're setting yourself an almost impossible challenge unless you involve her in the process. How about getting her to make a bit of a wishlist of stuff on UK sites (which surely she'll enjoy doing?) and then you can pop in and collect - or order online yourself then hand-deliver.

Choosing something without involving her will otherwise be unlikely to produce a winner, but bear in mind high st clothes shopping is dire in Aust, all the stuff is horrible quality and overpriced and there is so little choice; so I think she'll be delighted to be able to do a bit of UK online wish list compiling.

MrsMelon · 19/11/2012 16:32

I would get Topshop or Zara, a couple of funky tshirts.

ComradeJing · 19/11/2012 22:17

Top shop has opened here too now (sydney)

nancy75 · 19/11/2012 22:24

Short shorts! Went to Australia earlier this year, every girl was wearing tiny shorts, dps sister is 15 and she like to shop stuff ( they don't have top shop is brisbane)

diamondsagirlsbestfriend · 19/11/2012 23:06

I live in Oz, where abouts does she live, i might be able to give you an idea. it does very by area really, ie gold coast its alot of short skirts and short shorts

MrsCantSayAnything · 20/11/2012 18:06

Queensland diamonds

OP posts:
Mosman · 21/11/2012 10:52

Oh goodness Queensland had its own very special sense of style I'd buy her something else completely not clothes.

Mosman · 21/11/2012 10:53

Or let her choose herself off the Next website

diamondsagirlsbestfriend · 21/11/2012 11:24

for Queensland, something, that has short sleeves, and most likely above the knee skirt. Alot of girls where shortish coloured denim shorts. But according to my little cousins the best thing ever is having something different from their friends as they like to be able to say "this is all the rage in Australia" in there case even when it isnt. So maybe see if you can find a independent, clothing shop, and get her something noone else over is going to have

MrsCantSayAnything · 21/11/2012 23:56

Mosman why? Don't they wear them there? Grin

She's a cute girl...very pretty and loves clothes. I can see from recent pics that she's into fashion.
