Bit controversial this .....real fur

Just asking as a general question.

My elderly mum has a fur coat. It was massively expensive, back in the day and is still pristine. I remember if used to go into cold storage for the summer! I also remember, as a child, snuggling into it and it and it smelt of her perfume. She still wears it.

She talks about leaving stuff " to me" (she's at that age, a little preoccupied with her not being here much longer) and I know she has the coat in mind.... It's become an heirloom.

What would you do? I personally have never owned anything sporting animal fur. I've told her I'd probably get a load of abuse, if I tried to walk about in it. But then I thought..... It's vintage, it's dead already, I cannot bring it back so, should it be binned?

Would you wear it? My mum, having been asked about it always says " yes it's genuine but it was bought for me in a decade when people did wear fur and gave it little thought". I'd be inclined to say "no, it's fake. A very good fake".

God forbid the demise of my mum should be anytime soon but, what would YOU do?

Id wear fur. But cant afford it!

I eat meat. wear other animal products so i dont see the difference AS LONG as its done humanely.

I totally disagree with all the cruelness but of i knew my fur came from a free range , humanely killed animal that never suffered in life or death then id wear it.

I weat leather and have NO idea where it came from or how the animal lived really. and wouldnt even think to find out.

I've turned down mink, sable, silver fox coats and a lynx hat from my mum. I find them pretty offensive, and I'd rather she sold them and used the money to live on. Vintage or new, wearing real fur speaks very loudly about a person and looks ostentatious / pretty ridiculous 99.9% of the time. Even Gaga can't carry off the badger / monkey fur she wears.
Sell them and get something stylish that isn't dead. You have to keep them refrigerated during summer in special cold store because even dead animals moult. Who needs to send their coat to summer camp every year? ludicrous and completely outdated concept.

PP that made me laugh, 99.9% Grin

I dont know depending on the fur.

Its not right to kill for there fur, i sit here looking at my lovely chinchillas, which are killed for their dense fur for coats etc.

Leather is okay, the meat is used so why waste?

EldritchCleavage · 01/11/2012 13:12

There is fur and fur. I'd wear the fur of an animal killed for its meat (why waste the pelt?), like rabbit and reindeer, ponyskin, cow hide etc. I'd never wear farmed fur because the animals are only bred for their pelts, in conditions of horrific cruelty. I would not buy snakeskin either, since hunting snakes for hides is depleting species.

My mum has one from years ago. Doesn't fit either of us now. If I could pass it off as a fake I would prob wear it. As it is it's currently being used as a draught excluder.

Eliza22 · 01/11/2012 14:17

Draught excluder.... Hmmmm.

I wear my granny's 1930s coat as a dressing gown. It keeps me warm round the house and means I don't have to switch on the heating if I'm working at home.

It was a different time, you can't bring the animal back to life. You also get to keep the link with your loved one, and be environmentally friendly.

Themilkybarisonme · 01/11/2012 22:02

If my grandma gave me her mink, I'd wear it in Poland in winter, when visiting family.
