Holiday clothes HELP

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:17

HELP i hate shorts and sandals. MIL thinks I look so funny in the summer in my jeans, trainers and sensible shirts.

So what can I wear on holiday to Spain this April???? I need shoes to wear with long skirts but hate sandals and flip flops.

I have a strange ugre for a jadda dress and girly shoes but fear looking silly and having sore feet.

waht about rolled up trousers and trainers with a vest?

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:31

I was looking at some vest style tops in DorothyP only £4 and £5. I might get some to wear under the lovely but ridiculously see though blouses I have seen.

I really need a pair of light weight shoes though as my feet are sweaty enough at the best of times.

I think my problem is I am a bit of a prude when it comes to clothes. MIL says but nobody will know you on holiday, I know but I still want to feel comfortable and not look a complete fool in the photos, I suppose the constant filming doesn't help Wink.

espadrilles?

JackieNo · 27/03/2006 22:35

Cropped trousers (or are they too close to shorts?) and ballet flat thingies (like \link{http://search.next.co.uk/shopping/ballerina%20shoes\these})?

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:38

What you mean like \link{http://www.additionsdirect.co.uk/AddNet/shop/Additions/-p231185-oF/-Shoebox-Womens-Espadrilles/product.aspx\these}, sorry no offence if you happen to be sporting a pair but I think they look ridiculous, hate wedge heels. Anything in a size 8 looks worse than the size 5's that are lways on display. Plus I have dodgy ankles that need either quite flat or support round the heel.
Straps round the legs tend to make them look chubby too.

Mind you Kirsty Alsop of Location Location seems to get away with them though. I always feel silly trying shoes like these on as I always have big black socks on.

re shoes, espadrille-type things are flat, comfy and more elegant than trainers - Next have some pretty canvas ones with ankle ties, and Clarks have some surprisingly comfortable wedge ones with either ties or a buckle strap.

In summer I favour two extremes - khakis (cropped or not), shirts/vests and trainers/sandals in a preppy-meets-expat look; or long skirts, flowy tops and flipflops/sandals in an ethnic-hippy look.
Don't think I've ever brought the two together though!

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:40

MMh Jackie they aren't quite so bad, again they always make my feet look like boats, time to acept that they are and make them pretty ballet boats perhaps. Would look good with a jadda dress too.

MrsBadger · 27/03/2006 22:42

NB long long skirts hide any sight of chubby ankles and look effortlessly elegant (or so I tell myself)

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:43

I do have a pair of zip off trousers I don't mind too much so perhaps a pair of crop ones too.

DH is still conviced I will be sitting on the beach in a pair of jeans and a fleece. while he flashes his 48" chest and his swim shorts Envy.

JackieNo · 27/03/2006 22:43

Yes, agree with Mrs Badger - and long skirts can be lovely and cool in the summer.

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:43

I do like floaty long skirts but still neeed the shoes to go with them.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 27/03/2006 22:45

(and what's a jadda dress? am intrigued and Google yields no joy)

JackieNo · 27/03/2006 22:45

Cropped trousers \link{http://search.next.co.uk/search?cnt=12&p=Q&ts=custom&images=on&nb=X37&np=18&nxti=0&nxtv=0&w=cropped+trousers&x=1&y=11\here} (sorry all from Next again, but plenty available elsewhere - maybe Gap?)

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:46

Whats the ettiquete of trying on sandals and other shoes you don't wear socks with. You used to get those pop socks dotted about. I always avaid places where they bring the hoes out so I don't have to hid my sweaty black fluff covered feet.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 27/03/2006 22:47

I'm awful and try shoes on barefoot, but do use my socks to wipe the worst of the fluff off my feet first (TMI I know...)

JackieNo · 27/03/2006 22:47

How about something embroidered like the Santa Rosa embroidered indian slipper \link{http://store.monsoon.co.uk/catalog/Welcome?catid=354\on this page}?

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:48

Windered who would ask, its the just below the knee 50's style dress like the one in the advert that goes....

Jadda... jadda...
jadda jadda jing jing jing. Where she dresses up to go to work in the cafe.

MIL has just bought DD6yrs a lovely jadda dress today for the holiday so I am jealous.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 27/03/2006 22:49

Yes, I try on barefoot if necessary too - especially if it's something I'm going to wear with no socks/tights. But I always seem to be wearing black socks tooGrin.

MrsBadger · 27/03/2006 22:49

(but don't pay £25 for them - go to an Indian shop and get them for a fiver)

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:49

I would rather try on bare foot than put on a 6mth old pop sock, come to think of it any pop sock. Even the name makes me shudder.

OP posts:
Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:51

I like the slippers but they seem so flimsy, pluss seeing teenage girls dragging them behind them in a horrible sort of a flip floppy way is horrible.

I do like the idea of them though, nice but expensive ones in monsoon.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 27/03/2006 22:53

Yes - know what you mean about teenage girls. But they can look lovely, I think, and quite soft, so fairly comfortableGrin.

MrsBadger · 27/03/2006 22:55

no idea what advert you mean, but is it something like \link{http://collection.hobbs.co.uk/Main/index.cfm?page=1009&element=1050&parent=1008&numdisplay=0\this} or \link{http://www.boden.co.uk/col.asp?segname=Women&styid=WH062&segid=6&gpname=Dresses&desname=Cotton+Print+Dress&gpid=6&gen=#\this}?

Skribble · 27/03/2006 22:56

Yes the first Hobbs one is a jadda dress Grin.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 27/03/2006 22:58

aha now I know
