Mole removal for cosmetic reasons

I have a mole, quite a large one on the side of my nose. It has always annoyed me - purely because of the look of it, to my knowledge there is nothing medically wrong with it. I've looked into having it removed a few times and now more seriously than before.

Does anyone have any experience, know of any considerations I should make? There is a sk:n clinic near me that does the removal, has anyone used those clinics for mole removal?

Any advice gratefully received!

Hi,

I had a mole removed on the side of my cheek. Easy and painless. Didn't leave a scar either.

I have another 3 that seem to have appeared on the same cheek. When I have some spare money, I will have the other 3 removed. £180 for removal and around £70 to get it checked at lab (all clear)

I wont have the others checked at lab next time. They aren't dark, just a slightly lighter brown than my natural skin colour.

I had it done with a private surgeon that practiced at Royal Free. London. NW3

What type of mole is it? I got a skin tag type one removed from the side of my nose and one from my eye lid on separate occasions both on the NHS.

The nose one was done in the GPs surgery and the eye one at the hospital. Both had started to get sore which is how I got them done on medical reasons. I would approach your GP first. It takes seconds. My nose one did bleed afterwards but only because I forgot and rubbed my nose.

I had a choc button sized one removed from jawline on NHS, the scar is visible but not like the mole was. It was done under local anesthetic and was a quick outpatient surgery.

You can prob get it removed on the nhs because of the potential for it to cause problems later on. I have developed this awful mole type thing on my right boob when I was pregnant. Is one of those bulbous pale moles that old ladies get. The second I stop bf I am getting it sawn off.

Not sure of the right name to call it, but more bulbous than flat, the size of a pea, attached to both the side of my nose and my cheek IYSWIM. Sounds like I should talk to my GP first.

Sorry for hijack but can you get those removed on the NHS? I have one on my upper back that looks like a rice krispie. Doesn't hurt or itch so presumably not dangerous but looks hideous all the same.

My GP wouldn't remove mine on NHS - It didn't look dangerous to be honest. Just unsightly. That's why I had it removed privately.

I went to a private plastic surgeon. If it had been a mole on my arm I'd have been happy with a dermatologist - but on my face? A specialist please!

I had a 'rice crispie' sized one too, on the back of my neck.

It was only small but quite prominent and the hairdresser used to catch it with her comb unless I warned her to watch out for it.

I had it removed on the NHS about 6 yrs ago, although some have said since that I probably wouldn't have been able to now as they've made some changes & it wouldn't be a priority.

Good point, at the ski:n clinic the guy who does the removal is a plastic surgeon, however you seriously pay for that privilege!

I strongly agree with CommandoB, I would only let a plastic surgeon at your face. Absolutely.

My nose one was removed in seconds by the freezing technique in the Drs surgery. You definitely wouldnt need to go to a plastic surgeon!

My eye one was sniped off in the eye clinic only a couple of years ago. The nurse practitioner who did it said they do them on eyelids all the time. She cetainly didnt make me feel I was getting something done for frivolous cosmetic reasons. She said it was important to get rid of them before they grown too big.

If anyone is going near your face make sure they are a platic surgoen.

I had a mole removed from my lipline- looked like a wart but was told it was a mole.

Cost me £500 privately- my insurance wouldn't pay as wasn't considered dangerous- didn't bleed etc.

It was worth it for me as I was very self conscious of it.

I had 3 tiny stitches in for a week- and there is absolutely no scar whatsoever.

I have had 7 or 8 moles removed from my face or neck over the years and the scars are barely visible. I was very self-conscious about the moles but not in the slightest about the fine scars. People tell me I have nice skin(!) Easily covered with make-up anyway. I had them all removed by different plastic surgeons (privately because I couldn't wait.) I have had loads removed from my body too but on the NHS.

OK, I just read your post a bit more (sorry). The moles I had which bothered me were pea-sized, flat and on my cheeks. The surgeon can't just "scoop" or "scrape" the mole away otherwise you'll be left with a cavity and a big, fat hole on your face - not subtle. Instead he had me gurning and grinning so he could see the way the muscles and contours of my face worked before cutting away an eliptical shape which included the offending mole(s). Whilst a bigger removal, it left a more natural look. So natural in fact that nobody has ever noticed... people who saw the bandages/stitches afterwards assumed car crash. Not even my family know what I've had done... that's the difference between a surgeon and a GP with a scalpel.

I have had four moles removed from my face by a plastic surgeon. I paid privately to have it done but I'm so glad I did. With a bit of foundation on I don't think you can see scarring - even where I had quite a large deep mole removed.

I've had a mole and a sebaceous cyst removed on the nhs, one on my cheek and one on my jawline. No visible scarring at all. I don't see any reason why you would pay for it! In both cases mine were a bit itchy but there was nothing sinister about either of them.

Beingblonde - I don't think the NHS remove moles if they are just cosmetic. They wouldn't for me. That's why some people chose to go private.

Although it may be worth checking your with your GP. You may be lucky to have a PCT that fund mole removal.

I'm pleased I had mine done - and I'm going to have the other two that have appeared removed in the new year. Just need to find some spare money to do it!

Sister had small one removed privately (GP told her she was ridiculous) and cost £300 and left a tiny scar but she's much happier.

I would be surprised if you're not left with a scar there, talk it thru carefully.
