I'm shopping fr new boots this weekend and want to avoid boot faux pas of at all possible.

To me, mum boots are black, leather ankle boots that do up with a zip, have a sensible block heel and come from Clarks. They must be worn with jeans that are slightly to short and fit terrible on the bum because Mother does not understand low rise jeans and tries to pull them up to her waist.

My boots, on the other hand, are not mum boots, because I am a cool mum Wink. And yes they are mid calf Fly London boots, tucked into leggings. Blush

Bunbaker · 18/10/2012 14:07

Are these mum boots?

tak1ngchances · 18/10/2012 14:28

Yes Bun they are 100% mumboots

dexter73 · 18/10/2012 14:39

I rather like those Bunbaker!

Bunbaker · 18/10/2012 15:07

Hmm well I am a mum and I think they look nice with slim jeans (skinnies just look awful on me). Mine aren't exactly like the ones in the picture, but look quite similar, and are pretty comfortable (for a heel)

mycatlikestwiglets · 18/10/2012 15:38

I wouldn't say the boots Bunbaker linked to are mum boots at all - the heel is too chunky, the toe is too rounded and they have too much going on with the strap etc. imo. I would say mum boots are very much what WantAnOrange described.

QueenieLovesEels · 18/10/2012 16:31

I think Mum boots span from Uggs, Fly London Metis types, Dr Martens authentic wedge boots, Fitflop boots- to anything by Footglove and Clarks square heel range. They especially look 'mum' if they are worn with skinny jeans topped off with a parka, tunic, scarf and/or long pendant.

Other variations on the theme include padded body warmers and hoodies and that god awful Pandora jewellery.

Flumpyflumps · 18/10/2012 19:16

I am so glad I asked this, was all set to look at knee boots, tuck skinnies in and add gilet. Upon reflection this probably would look very mummy ish on me.
Ankle boots here i come!

Who gives a shit? Wear what you want. I have always ignored fashion - I go into shops and find things I like then I buy them. Most importantly I know what suits me and flatters my shape.

nilbyname · 18/10/2012 19:30

A gilet? A gilet? Advise yourself!

AngryFeet · 18/10/2012 19:31

This year I have bought:-

These in black

These in brown

And these

Some might be considered Mumsy but they all look nice, are comfortable and between all 3 go with lots of different outfits.

nilbyname · 18/10/2012 19:33

The toes are wrong on those biker boots.

Apt name for the thread though AFeet

MaureenCognito · 18/10/2012 19:44

Also knee length brien boots with white stuff skirt are mumsy.
The block heel next ones.

Plus biker boots a bit.

Caerlaverock · 18/10/2012 19:48

Mum boots are a myth, mum jeans unfortunately are not

FunBagFreddie · 18/10/2012 20:22

I'm totally confused now. I don't want to get rid of my knee highs, they were expensive and I like them. Sad

mejon · 18/10/2012 21:25

So wear them Freddie - why would the opinion of a few people on the internet mean you can't? I'm with AngryFeet - just wear what you like if it fits you and is comfortable. Enough of this 'mumboots' thing please!

Flumpyflumps · 18/10/2012 21:39

To be fair I've never heard this description outside of MN, just curious. Seems a much wider spectrum than I anticipated.
Still, looking forward to shopping, have had a word with self over gilet.

The ankle boot from Next with bootcut is an urban myth round these parts but knee boots and a gilet from Joules (spotty lining, natch) - definition of 'mum' at our school.

Bunbaker · 19/10/2012 08:31

Neither have I Flumpy

According to the style police gurus on here I am deeply unfashionable - I wear Per Una jeans, "mum boots", bootcut jeans, like waterfall cardigans, own matching necklace and earring sets, dislike tattoos and don't suit skinny jeans.

Do I care? No.

poocatcherchampion · 19/10/2012 08:45

I'm embracing the gilet for 7mo dd at the moment, mine doesn't fit Norks too huge

Waspie · 19/10/2012 08:57

I am wearing these Cat Anna over skinny jeans. I don't give a feck if they're mumsy because they are warm and solid enough that if DS treads on my foot, or drops something on my foot I can't feel a thing Grin

PerryCombover · 19/10/2012 13:05

lolling at queenie 's shudder at skinnies
