Mistaken for my Dd's granny-gutted!!

I was at a social event the other evening with my d, 10, and this woman came up to me and asked if dd was my GRANDAUGHTER!! I'm 53, so old enough to be just about, but I've always thought I looked much younger. I was gutted!! I'm slim, work out, always have warpaint on and dress funkily. Where have I gone wrong? P

How does your hair look?

fedupandfifty · 14/10/2012 12:12

Hair is short, layered and highlighted. No grey.

I'm sure it happens a lot these days, as women are having their children much later.

I asked a little lad (about 4) if he was looking for his granny the other day as I'd seen them together earlier and he was looking lost. She stomped over and said I'm his mother, actually. Blush. She looked mid fifties, and I just assumed that she was the gran.

In some families, grannies are in their fifties, and they therefore assume that any woman that age is a granny.

Luckily in my family, grannies are traditionally safely in their seventies.

If it makes you feel any better, one of my friends was once mistaken for her DP's mother. They were both about 27, and as far as I could see there was no excuse for this. Some people are just dense when it comes to estimating age, and so socially incompetent that words just shoot out of their mouths with no input from their brains.

I once bumped into one of DD's schoofriends and his mum. We sat outside a cafe chatting. Man at the next table got involved in our conversation and referred to me as the other mum's mother Shock

I live in a dream world where I am slim and young. In reality I am fat and 53.

Tis life!

yy, my mum was a grandma when she was 48 (my elder sister had her first at 24). That wasn't particularly unusual, my mum was obv. also 24 when she had my sister.

These days women of 48 are still becoming mothers.

Eek.

Well its technically very possible so i wouldn't feel too bad. If you and your child both had your children young you could be grandmother to a 17 year old by now. I know what you mean though, you knew you were a slightly older mum but didn't think you looked it. Perhaps ask a trusted friend for an honest opinion, or assume the woman is a bad judge of age, or just decide you don't give a shit (easier said than done i know)
