I wrote a long post yesterday about this and it got eaten!

I want to know about the non-modelly, real-life people whose style makes you sigh a little with happy envy. I don't mean the people with the most high-end wardrobes, necessarily - just the people who Get It Right. What's the key to their look?

Yes- she really dresses to make the most of her hair too- lots of rusts and browns and turquoise. It does also help that she's slim and kinda willowy. Grin I'm sure it's a confidence thing.
When I get dressed in the morning I make a real effort to look nice (all be it in ten mins) and that's the snapshot I carry with me for the day. However, when I catch a glance in the mirror as the day goes on its not exactly that snapshot that I see... AngrySmile

I love the sound of some of these looks - particularly the woman delphine mentioned at the start of the thread, I can really visualise her. I also like what Hopefully said about her colleague who dresses wonderfully but not sensibly. Sometimes I feel that there's an expectation that true Style must always be Classic and Capsule, but this equation doesn't always make sense to me. While I adore watching older women who have had the time and money to grow into sleek, effortless wardrobes, I also get a real kick out of seeing what younger women - my college-going sis for example - can do with high street trends. It's a fine line because cheap trend-driven clothing doesn't look great on most people, but some people just have a real knack for looking polished or stylish whatever they're wearing.

Ooh! I've thought of another stylish person: my DP's brother. He looks fantastic in skinny suits peacoats, man-cardis, etc. A real Topman look but carried off brilliantly. My DP on the other hand...Is the most gorgeous man alive slight exaggeration but just has NO interest in clothes. It's a real pity because he's tall and slim and could wear anything and look well.

Everlong you are so right to do that - I've always been too shy to do it but am going to make it my mission from now on! Occasionally people ask me about stuff I'm wearing and I'm always ridiculously pleased, so why wouldn't anyone else be.

A good friend of mine always always looks IMMACULATE! I've known her for almost five years and I've never seen her in the same outfit twice.

She must have more shoes than I could dream of and she has the ability to look fabulous in everything. I went shopping with her and shoes that I thought were a bit granny ish just transformed when she tried them on! I would be very Envy but she's so incredibly lovely that I find it hard to be :o.

RobinSparkles · 11/10/2012 10:51

I'm always looking at other women. DH always tells me off for staring Blush.

I would just love it if someone looked at me the way that I look at them though!

Diana2000 · 11/10/2012 11:02

My mum is incredibly stylish. She's 60 and is about a size 8. Her style is very relaxed and 'thrown on' but still elegant and put together looking at the same time.

She doesn't have anything expensive in her wardrobe, it's all charity shop finds, matalan and primark but she always looks amazing and every time I see her I have to ask where she got this or that item of clothing. I've honestly never known anyone who can make such cheap clothes look so good. That sounds like a horrible back handed compliment but I don't mean it that way, I'm honestly in awe of how good she is at finding nice things and putting an outfit together as I just can't do it myself.

delphinedownunder · 11/10/2012 11:27

Have just thought of someone else, perhaps a little less classic, but stunning all the same. My colleague'swife is really tall and slim. Shiny black hair to her shoulders with a fringe, although she does wear it in a twist (never a pony tail) quite a bit and always perfect make up with crimson lips. She wears lots of patterned vintage dresses with long glass or ceramic beads and pendants and either tall black boots or a pair of embroidered docs. Occasionally she wears slim green trousers tucked into boots with a fitted, belted black wool jacket . She is an artist and looks like it, but definitely not in a dragged through a hedge backwards way, like some of my artist friends.

delphinedownunder · 11/10/2012 11:29

And I get told off for staring too. I have a real interest in fashion, but can't ever manage to pull it off myself. Look like a sack of spuds.

SeveredEdMcDunnough · 11/10/2012 11:48

Everlong, I once followed a mum round the school playground, trying not to be too obvious, so I could look at the style number on the back of her super nice Levis Blush

When I saw what it was, I realised I had already got some BlushBlush

They looked better on her!

Robin

Some people just look wonderful in granny shoes. Very Envy since the granny shoes are always the comfy shoes.

OP posts:
Hopefully · 11/10/2012 12:36

Curtsey I look truly awful in granny shoes and am also bitter.

I have compromised on equally comfy biker boots from sept-may and sandals in between.

I really do think it's about honouring your own personality, not trying to fit in with a list of 'essential' classics.

I always have to reassure my clients I won't try to turn them into me - my style is a little, ahem, alarming to anyone who like frills, corsages and cowl necks. Grin

What's a pea coat??? Blush

Hopefully · 11/10/2012 13:59

Hip or thigh length, double breasted, not too fitted. Like this

mampam · 11/10/2012 14:04

Thank you Hopefully, I realise now I actually have a "pea coat". Think you can tell that I'm definitely not one of the talked about stylish people on this thread Grin

RobinSparkles · 11/10/2012 14:45

Curtsey

They were these sort of affair! I'd look a mess but they just transformed on her feet and looked fab Envy.

Dollydowser · 11/10/2012 15:02

You lot mentioning more senior stylish ladies reminded my about the blog 'Advanced Style' (sorry no link, on iPad) featuring lots of beautiful ladies who have their own sense of style. Fascinating and also inspiring!

Shoshe · 11/10/2012 15:07

My mum was, until very ill with cancer at 58 looked and had the figure of Charlize Theron. No matter what she wore looked fantastic.

Her daughter on the other hand .........Angry

purplepenguin86 · 12/10/2012 00:39

I would love to be one of those people, but I don't think it is ever going to happen. I think you must have to spend a lot of time buying the right clothes, choosing the right clothes to wear every day, planning in advance, coordinating everything, doing your hair and make up beautifully etc. I don't think I would ever be organised enough. It's a shame really. I would love someone to take me shopping and get all the 'right' clothes, and just tell me what to do. I am 26 and I feel like I should be much trendier than I am!
