Can dry shampoo cause hair loss/thinning?

Hi I have posted about thinning hair recently and I have done a lot of reading on the subject.
By chance I came across a thread on mumsnet about greasy hair where someone mentioned dry shampoo as a possible solution, and then another mumsnetter said "Beware of dry shampoo, it thinned my hair a lot".

That sentence stuck to my mind, because I have been using the dry shampoo Baptiste (probably in excess) for the past few years.
When I say in excess, I mean every single day (expect on the day of washing my hair and the day after), but then I would only wash my hair once a week or less Blush thinking that it would be much better for the health of my hair.
I heard so many times that washing your hair often was bad for it, but now I'm wondering if a dry shampoo could have done some harm instead.
My hair has less volume than it used to have, but is definately showing signs of thinning more on the areas where I used to spray the dry shampoo. Sad

I read somewhere on the internet that dry shampoo soaks up the grease and gathers it to your scalp and it then clogs the pores which makes regrowth difficult.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced a thinning of the hair after using dry shampoo excessively?
P.S: I did do all the blood tests and they came back normal.

I've had thinning hair for years. YEARS, practically bald at times small exaggeration

Only recently have I discovered the wonders of Baptiste dry shampoo AND there is a thickening one. Find it fabulous stuff, definitely hasn't made it worse (fwiw), hair looks thicker am pretty pleased with myself though feel daft I hadn't noted it sooner.

I'm also using a great shampoo from Marks, Aptiva Propoline and find it also makes my hair look thicker.

I also take some supplements (Silcea) but have not really noticed any difference to my hair although my nails have improved (these have also been v bad for years).

Dry shampoo has been around since the the 1940s and I started using it in the 70s so I don't think that it causes hair thining.
Could your diet have anything to do with it? Lots of people on low carb or ultra low cal diets regularly report hair falling out.

I have been using dry shampoo the last couple of months and yes I've noticed my hair is thinning and has broken off the top. It didn't occur to me it could be the dry shampoo but it does make sense.

I thought my hair was breaking off after swimming in a pool straight after washing it.

Hi, dry shampoo isn't good for your scalp health. It blocks pores and cause irritation and scaling. This is usually minor but if it continues, it can even lead to dermatitis and hair loss. Make sure you use clarifying shampoo at least once a week. I recently wrote an article about thinning hair in women in my blog as I experienced recently myself. Perhaps you can find useful mbinsider.com/hair/hair-loss-prevention-treatment-phyto/

Hello Coffeecake,
I too have been experiencing thinning arpund hairline, the very place I used dry shampoo for months because it would be oily. I too thought that washing it was harsher and my mother is a hairdresser. I should have known better maybe. However, I would wash every few days but in between used dry shampoo, usually spray sometimes powder. I always had diner hair but a decent amount until November I noticed it was flatter, less volume, hairline looked thinner underneath. Now I have worked in the beauty business for a long time and I know many products may at best give an allergic reaction but rarely a severe issue like hair loss/thinning. I know it could be my age, 40’s, hormones or my fathers make pattern bald genetics. My mother had a full head of hair even at 65. My point is I agree it may be a trigger for hair thinning/loss since as said it’s in the areas I used it and women are said to rarely thin at hairline. Thank you for sharing, now I have something to think about.

Hi, I am having the same problem of hair loss due to the use of dry shampoo. Been using dry shampoo for 6 months. A month ago I stopped using it and my hair is still falling a lot. I am very afraid. When did you finish your hair loss?
