Help! I'm going to a wedding next week and I think I'm going to look too summery!

The weddings in the middle of Shropshire, the forecast ain't looking good and I'm not sure if what I've got to wear will work.

I've got this dress Ian's the last time I wore it I had a tan, nude kitten heels and no coat because it was mid summer. I don't have the time or money to get a new outfit, so how can I style this to look more autumnal. Do I wear sheer tights? I'm happy to apply lashings of fake tan

That would look lovely with black opaque tights and perhaps closed toe high heels or ankle boots.

Are you sure about the opaques? I thought as the top half was quite light and summery black opaques would look too heavy and unbalanced. Normally that would be my chosen method of autumn-ising an outfit but I wasn't sure it would work with his dress.

Needs must. Try the opaques and see how it looks. I think it will be fine. Bring sheers in case it gets hot on the dance floor.

I do have a Spanish looking black and red fringed shawl, I suppose I could wrap that around me to balance it up a bit.

Or do I just say sod it and slather on the fake tan, and just wear a smart coat over the top during the day? The only smart coat I've got is terracotta coloured so not a great match for a red dress.

Actually, it's more dusty pink then terracotta. Still not a great match for red.

I wore the same dress to a wedding in March. It was feckin freezing! Opaques didn't work though - too heavy with that fabric. I wore sheer nude tights and a black knitted shrug type thing.

Oh that's what I was worried about Tilly, I think I'm going to wear sheers too. I haven't a clue what to wear on top though.

I wore that dress, but with the rose pattern, to a late November wedding a couple of years ago with high heeled black boots and a red shrug (because the tops of my arms are not for the faint hearted).

I think sheer tights and a shawl or some sort of covering over your arms will be fine for early October.

Phase Eight usually have shrugs to match their colours - not particularly exciting, but does the job.

Black jacket with a red corsage of some sort?

I'd team this dress with a black fitted jacket, like a suit jacket, black closed toe shoes and a black fascinator/hat (depending on poshness of wedding!) large back clutch bag and simple jewellery and you'll look fab!

sleepdodger Walcott Hall, near Ludlow. Actually the weather looks like it might not be as bad as I thought now. But it's certainly not going to be that warm.

Knackeredmother The fabric is really light and floaty, it's viscose masquerading as silk I think (but it's brilliant because it's machine washable and needs no ironing at all. My kind of dress :o)

Celebmum Erm I don't have many of those things.. I'm not a suit wearer at work - more like jeans and teeshirts. As sad as it sounds I might have to raid my mum's wardrobe because she always dresses amazingly and is bound to have something to go. However, I do have some black patent leather high heeled mary jane type shoes with a white trim on them. I might have a look at how they look together. I must be the only person in the world who doesn't have a pair of plain black heels. But in my defence I have size 9 feet so I live in boots and converses.

sleepyhead I bought the dress much earlier this year, so I'm not sure they'll still have matching stuff in Phase 8. Might have a look this lunchtime. We've got one in the shopping centre down the road from work.

Just had a thought, what about a camel or silver coat? Not literally silver of course but I thought that might be a bit softer than black and red which is so strong.

I think it depends on whether you will be in the wedding photos - a member of the wedding party wore black and crimson in ours, and it really does irritate us every time we see our album because her outfit is the focal point of every photo she is in!

If I were you, I'd get a cream and gold pashmina (I recommend a company called Pashmina Paradise who operate through ebay and Amazon - very good price for cashmere and silk, beautiful quality, and sent very fast indeed). Their 2-ply pashminas are thick enough that you could get away with nude tights and your original shoes (as long as they're closed-toe), since it is quite early autumn. Alternatively, cream cardigan with red brooch/corsage. Nobody will see your smart coat and your dress at the same time, so it doesn't really matter if they aren't a perfect match.

Fake fur coat (White/cream/black even leopard print might work). Potentially sheer tights, but if your top half is toasty-warm, you shouldn't get that just-plucked-turkey look on your legs!

It is one of the most flattering dresses I have ever owned. You'll look fab.

I did see in Phase 8 this lunchtime a gold lurex bolero jacket today, can't link to it because bloody website is playing up, but I did wonder if it might work with that. I might bring the dress in with me tomorrow and try them on together.

MajorB I wish I had a cream fake fur coat, I would LOVE one! :o
