Dog walking footwear

Looking for recommendations, even though this isn't particularly stylish or beautiful.

I'm a bit new to this as puppy is only 5 months. Currently I wear trainers if on the road walking and wellies if going in the fields. But I live very rurally and the wetter and colder it gets I don't think trainers are going to be quite right for much longer, especially if jumping into grass verges to keep in from cars. What do you wear? Is there such a thing as waterproof trainers - or is that wandering into hiking boot territory? Cause I'm thinking that's not such a bad idea at the moment.

I'm on a bit of a Style and Beauty thread roll at the moment, this is 2 of 3. If you know a good everyday mascara or have an opinion on parkas, please come and find my other threads!

Walking boots with Goretex lining. Get them big enough for 2 pairs of socks (one thin eg CoolMax, the other as thick as its cold). You can probably get even more advice on this sort of thing if you post on The Great Outdoors instead of S&B

I can't imagine anyone managing without a good pair of walking boots! Mine are North Face, they are very comfortable and totally waterproof and I've had them for years now. Treat with an appropriate waterproofer occasionally.

I used to wear hunters with a lining but the tread has worn off now and I need soemthing else too. The country bookts look great but I (possibly oddly) rather like paddling in the sea in winter and I can't quite belive anything other than wellies will be properly waterproof.

My walking boots get me dryshod through streams - obviously only up to ankle depth but that's enough when you're walking a dachshund Grin

I second Dubarry boots. I have just got the wexford. They are very generous in the calf, warm and waterproof. Today I have walked along a flooded river bank with them, my feet stayed dry. We have 7 dogs to walk, usually 4 walks a day. I can't even begin to imagine the miles I cover. I had the dubarry boots blue linked to before - they lasted me a good 10 years. I used to keep horses and they have been knee deep in mud many a time!

I got the wexford this time because they are easier to get my now fat legs in!

I also wear these boots to pop to the shops and such, although I not very stylish and don't really belong on these boards, but these boots look good with age, they are proper country boots.

Wellies wise I have laura ashley wellies which are lasting well I have to say. I bought some sheepskin insoles so that thay are warm and soft underfoot.

Grin I think I might go in to an outdoors shop and ask for a beagle-height boot now!

I've got some hedgehog trainers from Millets which I bought when I went arse over tit in the snow, they seem to be very waterproof, I never get wet feet but do have to wear wellies if I'm going to plough through deep puddles, I have some thermal socks from a garden centre to wear with them.

GrimmaTheNome · 27/09/2012 23:43

Loving the image of 'hedgehog trainers' Grin ... but can I slightly hijack, sometimes I sort of run with the dog along the canal, its horrendously soggy and I can't face soaked trainers now its getting cold too...does anyone know of waterproof shoes suitable for running in?

lapsedorienteerer · 28/09/2012 21:06

Grimma - you can get gortex (or similar) trainers but to be honest easier just to use an older pair of trainers that you don't mind getting wet.

Lifeisontheup · 28/09/2012 21:41

I think hedgehog refers to the grip on the soles but I'm probably making that up.Smile

I have these. I love them.

trixymalixy · 28/09/2012 22:19
