Ok, where is the brilliant 'Warm and waterproof coat' thread from last year? I need another one.

I bought an amazing coat by Didriksons last year on the advice of a MNetter here who worked in the industry. She gave the BEST advice but I can't find the thread now. Basically she explained how warm AND waterproof is a hard combination to come by because we're the only country with such a wet and cold climate and no one designs for us. Nice.

I bought the coat for DS but ended up wearing it myself, now I need to buy him one of his own before he gets soaked to the skin!

So....I'm totally sold on a Didrikson, but could really do with knowing about the length; I'm 5'11", size 14. I don't want to spend that kind of money and have sleeves halfway up my arm. Apologies if this question has already asked. Thanks.

TiddlyZomZomZombie · 12/10/2012 13:04

Didriksons have long sleeves, my Rebecca has extra soft cuffs inside as well and they come down to my knuckle.

Longtalljosie · 12/10/2012 13:13

Do any of these coats have longish arms for taller people? I'd really appreciate a shortcut if so - every year I try on loads and they all float somewhere above my wrist...

Longtalljosie · 12/10/2012 13:13

Oh shit should have read to the end of the thread! Blush

saythatagain · 12/10/2012 13:22

Don't worry Josie - I'm waiting with baited breath for the one!
All this searching is making my head spin.

cheesebaby · 12/10/2012 13:36

If it helps, here are some measurements Viking Kids did for me - they are for the Cathlyn sizes 10 and 12...

Width of sleeve at elbow seam: 22 cm (12), 19 cm (10)
Sleeve length: 55 cm (12), 52.5 cm (10)
Shoulder width: 46.5 cm (12), 45 cm (10)
Chest width: 55 cm (12), 50 cm (12)
Waist: 56 cm (12), 52 cm (10)
Hips: 59 cm (12), 55 cm (10)

neolara · 12/10/2012 13:38

Bienemaja - I bought it from ZooVillage, the site Tikkabillajive linked to.

saythatagain · 12/10/2012 13:48

cheesebaby This will sound rather dumb but when you say sleeve length 52/53cm; is that the length from under the arm or the shoulder? Ta

WhatWouldCaitlinDo · 12/10/2012 18:51

I bought the Didrikson Taylor from Outdoor World Direct and it totally ROCKS. Waterproof, warm, just above the knee. Love it.

cheesebaby · 12/10/2012 19:49

Hmmm, well I don't know how they did their mnts, but I just measured the arm on my size 10(38) as 56cm from the armpit to end, and 65cm from shoulder seam to end...

BieneMaja · 12/10/2012 19:56

Right so I spent a while on the phone to the nice folks at Outdoor World getting the poor boy to measure all sorts of parts of the 36 and the 38. In the end I plumped for the 38, but there wasn't a lot in it. The waist is adjustable so I am hoping I can just pull it in if its too big.

I am usually a 10 on top, a 12 below. Time will tell!

I went for Black - the cost was £179.99 inclusive delivery, which I think is cheaper than Zoovillage? Its being delivered on Monday. Yay!

Going by past experience, this now means that we will have a mini heat wave and dry spell Hmm

youngblowfish · 13/10/2012 00:42

Here is the clicky link again for the Zoovillage website, it goes straight to all their Didriksons stock. It is a Swedish company that ships to the UK for free with UPS.

Longtalljosie and saythatagain, my Didriksons Taylor has very long sleeves. I am 5'10" and the sleeves cover my wrist entirely even when I lift my arms up. Similar to Tiddly's Rebecca, my Taylor has inside soft cuffs as well which come up to the middle of my palm. According to the info given on the zoovillage website, the length of the arms increases with the size of the coat.

This is a little measurement chart for the Taylor I copied form here (all measurements in cm):

Size Arm Chest
XXS/34: 58 96
XS/36: 59 100
S/38: 60 104
M/40: 61 108
L/42: 61 112
XL/44: 61 114
xxl/46: 62 124

Apparently, you can actually enter your measurements on the website and see what size would fit you, but I don't know how reliable that would be since I have not tried it. All I know is that their sizing is not very straightforward Confused.

Please be wary of my confirmation bias, but I am even more in love with my Taylor now. I did a spot of shopping in London after work and was wonderfully warm and dry despite a complete deluge. Most amazingly of all, I did not have to take it off on the tube! That has never happened to me before in any of my winter coats (unless it was snowing of course). The Northern Line was oppressively hot, but I did not break a sweat. Even my skiing gear cannot compare to that, but I guess it was also much cheaper than any of the Didriksons. Anyway, my commute finished late at night in pouring rain, which was so heavy that my shopping bag had a puddle of water in the bottom by the time I got home. I remained completely dry and toasty and the hood which I was complaining about earlier was actually amazing in keeping the water off my hair and face without restricting my vision.

I'll stop rambling now, here's to staying properly dry and warm this winter Wine

saythatagain · 15/10/2012 11:09

Thanks for the info; I'm still swayed by the Naomi but am assuming that the measurements will be virtually similar? Now I just have to casually mention it to dh!

Wethoughtitwasanotherday · 15/10/2012 11:33

I have just bought the Berghaus insultated richmond reduced to £99. It is very light and quite smart, at a push I could wear it to work and still ook rreasonably turned out. It comes up a little small, I am a standard 10 and it just fits so I would go a size up. Am yet to be out in the rain but it promises to be completely waterproof.

annieapple7 · 15/10/2012 12:42

My Didrikson Naomi arrived today. Looks fabulous - you can tell it is really well made. I ordered the 38 (10) although I am a 14 as they are apparently very generous. Well it fits me on the top half bit it tight around my hips (although I do have a big bum I have not had this problem with a coat before).
Will the next size up be too big on top - sleeves are already generous. Also there is no belt - just two button poppers on the sides to cinch it in a bit. Lovely length though - a couple of inches above knee and slightly longer at back. Drat.

BieneMaja · 15/10/2012 13:00

As far as I can tell the didriksons are very roomy on top but quite slim but round the bum. I suppose it is all going to depend on your shape.

My Taylor arrived and i went for a 38, it's very roomy on top (I'm a 10 top) but I couldn't have gone any smaller on the bum (where I am usually a 12...)

The arms are super long, but because of the style of cuff they can be turned up. The hood is mental though! With the coat done up I have about a 2 inch circle to peer out of! Most of which is obscured by fur Wink

Curtsey · 15/10/2012 14:03

Is cheese still on this thread? How do you find the zipper on your Didriksons Cathlyn? Mine's really stiff and hard to do up :( Only complaint I have with the coat so far.

accessorieshelp · 15/10/2012 16:59

ok so i have a few questions on the Didriksons Taylor:-

  1. a size 8 Lindsey was too big on me (am normally a 10-12), should I go for a 6 in the Taylor? Am worried that my bum (which is proportionally bigger) will be a bit big for it. Anyone tried a Lindsey AND a Taylor? Don't want to order from Sweden & have to send it all the way back.. No UK companies seem to do it in a size 6 as far as I can see..

  2. Do I go for a 'dark green' which in the Lindsey was more of a brown, or black?

  3. most importantly - DOES THE FUR DEFINITELY COME OFF the hood? I spoke to Outdoorworld Direct & they said it doesn't, but I saw up the thread the other day (don't remember whose post sorry) someone saying it DOES. They got it from Sweden. So does it or not? Are there 2 different versions? On Didriksons website it doesn't mention detachable fur...

thanks. Am determined to sort this coat business once and for all it's been going on waaaay too long.

ooh, also saw this - anyone seen it/have it/tried it on? Thoughts please kedzie

BieneMaja · 15/10/2012 19:30

accessories

I just got my Taylor from Outdoorworlddirect and I was really happy with the service. They seem to have a lot in stock.

I have the 38 (which they are saying is a 12 but really 38 is a 10) and like I said up the thread, the top is roomy, but not massive and the bottom is about right. The waist pulls in at the back and its fairly fitted. I am usually a 10 at most on top and it doesn't swamp me (its a coat after all!). I am a good 12 below and its about right.

The fur definitely comes off, I took mine off today to see if I liked it without.

I got the black and the material is lovely - very cottony. I think it would be lovely in the dark green - i just wanted something I could get away with at work and I have a green parka already.

BieneMaja · 15/10/2012 19:31

Also, i think you'll find that the reason that no UK companies have the 6 is that they have kind of "resized" them. They are calling the 36 a UK10 which it definitely isn't normally.

I would stick with looking at the euro sizes and go for a 36...

accessorieshelp · 15/10/2012 19:52

thanks Biene, am pleased the fur comes off - did it look ok without?

The Lindsey (8) felt too roomy on the top half and I have a feeling the Taylor will be the same then. It just looked wrong

Would like to try it in a 6 and 8.. also outdoorworlddirect only have an 8 in the black now. Maaan I want to try a 6 and an 8 and a green and a black!

year2mum · 15/10/2012 20:14

annieapple7 - where did you order your naomi from - think I need one!
Do you know if any stores actually stock them in order to try them on before buying?

BieneMaja · 15/10/2012 20:19

accessories its worth ringing them as they had a rummage and found me the size and colour I wanted, despite it being out of stock on the site...

I would ideally like to try the 36 as well, but I'm loathed to pay £10 return fee if it isn't right!

accessorieshelp · 15/10/2012 20:24

thanks will give them a call tomorrow. Do you like it in black?

I know what you mean about return fee, I've already forked out £10 to return a Lindsey

annieapple7 · 15/10/2012 23:06

Hi year2mum. I ordered mine from vikingkids. I would love to know if they stock them anywhere to try on (I am in South Wales) because I can't be paying all this return postage to try them on!
