Is it always wrong to pluck above your eyebrows?

I've heard this again and again.

But I have really weird eyebrows - wide but really sparse so not sure where to begin but think I need to try and make them look better.

No, complete tosh. But you do have to keep it up once you start. I have good eyebrows but if I didn't pluck both above and below (and in between ) they would
Be about an inch thick!

No. I always have done or else I'd look like a werewolf. I trim them too.

You just need to go carefully.

CointreauVersial · 19/09/2012 22:58

I get the odd random hair above the brow which I pluck, but generally the guidance is to pluck from underneath.

If you really don't know where to start, can I suggest you get them done professionally? You only need to go once; once they've sorted out the shape for you, it is easy to just maintain it. It doesn't cost a lot.

I might grit my teeth and go professionally. I'm just concerned about the pain. At home I can stop and start when my eyes start watering. Also I'm worried about the end results. Do you watch in a mirror whilst they do it and say 'stop, that's enough'. Or do you choose an eye brow from a menu?

Aye, but they'll be a damn sight quicker in the beauticians! Then you just need to give them a tidy up once in a while once they've done the "shaping", which is difficult if you've got eyebrows that look like someone's smudged dirt above your eyes with their thumb [fellow sufferer]

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/09/2012 23:10

It hurts. But you just get on with it. And take a couple of paracetamol half hour before going in.

I've never been given a menu. They just get on with it.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/09/2012 23:11

Didn't mean to say "get on with it" twice Blush

kimberlina · 19/09/2012 23:15

How do you make sure that you dont end up with a really thin line or a shape you dont like. Or do you just trust them?

Sorry for lots of q's. Don't want tp end up looking permanently surprised

Just do a few hairs at a time, in very good light then stand back. Do it over a couple of days.

Don't go mad and blitz both of them in one go on your first time!

As a beauty therapist we were taught not to remove from the top as it does affect the shape. If there are any downy hairs or stray ones then they are ok to remove but not the actual eyebrow hair.

When doing a new client I hold a mirror up & discuss the shape & where I suggest removing from. That way there is no confusion on the shape.
I remove most with wax & then use tweezers to get the right shape.

FairPhyllis · 20/09/2012 03:33

I have pretty sparse eyebrows too and I do pluck above, but mainly at the ends to give a more defined end shape.

Eyebrow waxing is a lot less painful imo than lip waxing or leg waxing. You can ask the therapist to give you a natural look, not too thin - just following your natural shape.

CointreauVersial · 20/09/2012 13:15

I had mine waxed as well. I was also concerned about ending up with brows like Marlene Dietrich, but the beauty therapist talked through what I was after, and it was fine. Then I just whipped out any strays that appeared from then on.

OneHandFlapping · 20/09/2012 13:20

I pluck above as well, because instead of having a nice defined upper edge, my natural eyebrows fade away gradually, finally disappearing nearly halfway to my hairline.

HipHopOpotomus · 20/09/2012 13:23

I've never been able to do my own eyebrows, to the extent that I completely ignored them for 33 years.
Then I discovered threading and have never looked back. Yes it hurts, but it's brief. I always ask for "a tidy up, NOT too thin please".

MissBoPeep · 20/09/2012 13:40

I always understood that if you plucked from above, the hairs could grow back in an odd way- differentt to the original line.

You need to place a pencil alongside each nostril, then angle it to the outer corner of your eye- that's where the end of your eyebrow should be.

If they are too bushy, then pluck from underneath until you have them the right depth- but don't make them too thin as it's ageing and chavy.
