Can anyone suggest a good hairstyle for my thin, fine shoulder-length hair?

I'm off to the hairdressers tomorrow. Haven't been for ages as I haven't been able to afford it and I don't want to be disappointed! I have a fringe which I'd like to keep and don't want to go much shorter than collar length. My hair is straight, quite fine and there's not much of it. I am fairly rubbish at styling it. Currently mousey/mid-brown but I'm going to have some highlights to cover the emerging grey and wanted to go for a warm honey kind of colour.

A life-time of my mother criticising my hair means I find it hard to imagine anything which might suit me. Any ideas?

If its thin and lank I would go shorter than collar length. A blunter bob shape would be good. What's your face shape?

S'OK I am obviously destined to always have crap hair. My mother was right...

If your hair is fine don't get layers cut in, make sure you tell the hairdresser this. Layers can have the effect of thinning fine hair.Have a think about growing your fringe out so you have the choice of a sweeping fringe. Highlights or low lights near to your colouring as a child tend to be a good bet.

I was going to say a blunt bob as well, no layers, but if you get it slightly angled then have the very back slightly layered (that's not what I mean but I can't think of the word!) it will look thicker.

Thank you kaumana

If you get a Babyliss big hair you can pouf it out a lot. Funny how all the pics you get when you google are of models with about a yard of hair.

Blunt layers can actually make your hair look fuller, Not all layers thin hair out.

fluffydressinggown · 19/09/2012 21:57

I have similar hair.

I have a bob, it is a bit shorter towards the back which makes it easier to style (takes longer to sit on my shoulders because as soon as it does that it flicks out - but still get some face shaping length at the front). I have long layers in it - any short layers make it far too fine. I also have a full fringe but have had a sweepy one before. My hair is chin length at the front.

Oh and i have very finely woven honey highlights as well"

kaumana · 19/09/2012 21:58

Your welcome, I have fine hair and a mum like yours Smile

fluffydressinggown · 19/09/2012 21:59

Yes I do think you need layers if you have fine straight hair - my hair when all one length looks very straggly and tatty, with the layers it seems to get some shape and movement.

ShirtRipper · 19/09/2012 21:59

Well they do, obviously but blunt layering doesn't tend to take so much hair off the ends, the lift is often less when cutting so the layers are more subtle.
Have you ever tried adding volume with a diffuser attached to your dryer?

comelywench · 19/09/2012 22:00

My hair's fine and I don't have much of it. A bob with soft layers has always worked well for me. I need the layers to get some volume in it.

I'm pretty crap at styling mine too, but I have found that if i use TIGI's pillow talk, blow dry and then put in some batiste dry shampoo it makes my hair much fuller (tho still very fine and not much of it).

Don't go too short - you can still have a collar length bob and that would be lovely.

P.s whenever I've had a bob, I've always had to blow dry it and then turn the ends under with my GHDs (in sections). I can't do a proper blow dry. No doubt you can, but I thought I may as well come clean about my complete and total ineptitude! If you have fine hair you should automatically get excellent blow drying skills genetically linked or something. It's not fair!
