So, who fancies helping a shoe polishing virgin?

I have the lovelist, comfiest zip up Dr Marten boots. I want to be buried wearing them.

They're medium brown but looking a bit tattty and I'd like to polish them which I'm aware I should be doing anyway . However, I have not done this before.

My concerns are:
Streaky polish which looks like fake tan.
Polish wiping off onto clothes/furniture/other shoes.
What brand to buy.
Ruining them.

Is there a secret to doing it? Or do you just rub it on, leave it and then wipe it off?

Classic shoe polishes don't have color that can rub off - the creamy aniline polish used for delicate or colored shoes is actually translucent stuff (and you can start with it if you are scared). First you clean the shoes by brushing them thoroughly, then you work the shoe polish into the leather (we use the round small brush on top of a bigger shoe brush), then you work it into a shine using a chamois cloth. This removes any excess - you will not get it on your clothes.
Good instructions here.

Quick-polishes usually include color (to hide scuffs etc). They can stain.
