Is it really necessary to drink two or more litres of water a day?

Because it's bloody inconvenient frankly. I've a life to lead. I can't spend it all on the toilet.

Please someone come along and tell me it's all a load of rubbish (hopeful face emoticon)

I don't think it is necessary as much of your recommended 2 litres come from all food and drink consumed.

I think I probably drink that amount though as I don't drink tea/coffee/soft drinks. It's either water or hard liquor for me please.

No it's really not - this is a complete misinterpretation of the research which a lot of healthy-living magazines and articles have given too muc publicity to. We do need about that much water in our diet to keep our kidneys healthy, but most normal foods we eat are more than 50% water so you get most of your water requirement from the food you eat. Depending on what you are eating, you will probably be OK with about a pint/half a litre. Your body has a perfectly functional mechanism for ensuring you have the right water intake - unless you have something wrong with your metabolism, if you need more water you will be thirsty, and if you are not thirsty you don't need to drink. Your wee should be pale but noticably yellow - if it is a strong yellow then you need more water, if you can barely see yellow in the stream and it looks almost colourless then you are probably drinking too much water.

Ok thanks everyone. So my next question is... if it's not necessary for good health, is it necessary for good skin? It's one of the first things everyone suggests if you want to improve your skin no?

No needed for good skin either, they did a test on twins on some telly thing, no difference in skin over a month when one drank loads and the other didn't. Myth put about by all the bottled water companies imo.

Hmmm, there's disagreement on this one but I don't think it's vital for glowing skin. Clear skin depends on lots of factors, I do think what you eat is reflected in your complexion, but whether you drink a pint of water a day or two litres won't make a huge difference. It's just something beauty mags tell us.

I was reading an interview with super-duper, ranked number one model Joan Smalls the other day in which she claimed to drink 3 litres of water a day.

Three bloody litres?!!!

She must literally spend half her life on the bog.

Well if you drank 3 litres a day you would probably feel full and not need to eat much - handy for a model!

Yes Squoosh that's what I think. If I try to drink loads of water, it doesn't actually feel good - I can literally feel my body struggling to deal with it. Can't be good for you, surely.

No it's not, I am however drinking between 3 and 4 litres a day because looking at the colour of my wee, i was dehydrated and my skin is certainly quite a bit better.

I hardly ever drink water, I live on tea and alcohol I have great skin, everyone says so. (sb) Was trying to drink more water but then read a few things online about water in tea is still water and rehydrates you. If I ever get a headache (very very rare think twice a year) I drink a glass or two of water, which sorts headache out!

For health I suspect enough to make sure your wee is light in colour is sufficient, but my skin is definitely much better if I drink more water. Not less spotty necessarily, but much more plump and youthful. Probably not as noticeable if you're young, but now I'm past forty, it definitely makes a difference.

I drink it without noticing it now because I have hot water instead of tea/coffee. It takes a bit of getting used to, but now I prefer it and working in an office I reckon I drink about 6 mug-fulls during the working day.

One thing that is worth bearing in mind is that if you are having blood taken, either as a sample or as a blood donation, you should drink a reasonable amount of water beforehand as it can make quite a difference to the plumpness of your veins & to how easily they can get a good vein for the bloodletting.

So, in theory, if you wake up in the morning and have a cup of herbal tea or hot water with a squeeze of lemon, then perhaps a couple of glasses of water during the day, a couple more cups of herbal tea and maybe one cup of coffee, and then in the evening you have a pint of freshly juiced vegetable or fruit juice, you're probably getting your two litres a day? I wouldn't have to drink two litres of water on top of all the other liquid I'm drinking?

Think you'll find this 'rule' came into force by the Denome bottled water company back in the 80's before that there was nothing.

Our food contains a high amount of water even meat has 75%.

I have seen studies done on TV and when compairing twins it made no difference to skin or liver when one was drinking water while the other didnt.

Years ago when we worked the land, proper manual work, people didnt drink litres of water.

If you read the intake of any athletes they dont drink silly amounts of water, my husand drinks squash, so do I (I'm not fit).

I saw a recent study on TV that proved that the army worked just as efficeient just on basic water rations against drinking when not needed proving that you only need to drink when you feel thirsty. Can you imagine fighting WWII with 3 litres of water strapped to their backs!!!

Its rubbish, my wee is normal and I'm over 40. I deffinately wouldnt waste my money on bottled water either.

I've been drinking a lot more water over the last six months (at least 2.5 to 3 litres a day)

I feel fine, but it has made no difference to my skin or hair whatsoever, none.

I'm 37 though, not over 40 yet.

There have been a few people who have died from drinking too much water IIRC.

I don't think it makes a difference to skin unless you are replacing soft drinks (which I think do damage your skin) with water.
