I need my hair dyed to cover grey and even up the tone to an all over bitter chocolate instead of the current sun lightened version. I want it all shiny and swishy and soft. I have no time to go to a salon and am considering doing it myself for the first time ever...which brands are easiest to use and get even results? Any tips I need to know?

Help me! I have events to go to on Thurs, Fri and Sat and I never normally go anywhere exciting! I want to look my best and my hair is currently just not!

Good Luck!

I did it! It looks great! No grey, really dark bitter choc brown, no mess, lovely! The hardest bit was trying to get the slatherings of vaseline off my ears afterwards!!

Yay... Fauxfox glad you are happy with it!!

MrsHavisham sorry - badly expressed on my part. "End protectors" (in L'Oreal Excellence anyway) = tube of serum included in box (consistency of conditioner) which you can comb on shaft/ends of hair to prevent colour build up. Bit hit and miss imo though...

Btw, for anyone interested in natural hair dye, these are great. (Only reason I don't use them myself atm is because I live abroad and haven't got organised with ordering etc.)

His pdf guide to Colouring Grey Hair and these answers to faqs v. helpful/well written too

Naturetints from Holland and Barrett is good. It comes out more or less the colour you are expecting (unlike most other brands I've tried - eg. Nice n Easy 'light ash brown' comes out dark chocolate brown on me Hmm)

Also don't contain too many damaging ingredients, is easy to apply and the natural browns don't give you a red tinge (again unlike all other brands I've tried.) It's a bit more expensive than average - £9.99 - but worth it I think.
