What does your 4yo girl wear under her school uniform?

Mine currently wears nothing, but should she be wearing a vest, or some sort of crop top for when she gets changed for PE? When it gets colder a vest won't be a problem, but it's still a bit warm at the moment IMO but not in my mothers

She wears knickers, obviously.

The point is that you are complete strangers so I can ask. I would rather make a fool of myself here than send the poor girl to school in the wrong stuff where she will be known for the next 10 years!

My mother is obsessed with us all wearing vests, and regularly nags me because I do not. She sowed the seeds of doubt in my mind.

The crop top thing was because in the supermarkets they are sold alongside school uniform, as if they were an essential.

Hmm, mothers to daughters, or mothers to little piggies. Let me think

Vest when chilly, nowt when warm.

DS wears a vest too although his don't have Peppa Pig on.

MmeLindor · 10/09/2012 23:07

Simpletons??

What are you on about? There are no names banned on MN for having the words mothers or daughters in them.

And if you really think that paedophiles are going to get their rocks off by reading about whether girls are wearing VESTS to school, then you are the simpleton.

AnnieLobeseder · 10/09/2012 23:14

I say it's worrying because the OP seemed to me like she was asking if her 4yo needed to wear anything over her chest for modesty while changing for PE. At 4!!!!

By crop top, do you mean like a sports bra that only comes halfway down the chest? Or a tight vest going all the way down to her waist?

The idea that a girl should be wearing anything remotely bra-like before puberty is deeply disturbing to me.

So the question is, do you mean should she be covered for modesty or for warmth? One is disturbing, and the other is not.

THAT username, whoever it was, used to post about nothing other than tights. Seriously thread loads of messages about hosiery. Proved to be a troll and never to be seen again.

As I said, I just wanted to make people aware of who else might be reading this thread, that is all.

MmeLindor · 10/09/2012 23:21

Easteregg
there is no need to be rude, or to insinuate that I am stupid.

I must have missed that troll. A short explanation without the insults would have sufficed.

EasterEggHuntIsOver · 10/09/2012 23:23

To make it clear - I should have said the user called 'mother2daughters' was banned.
Nothing wrong with the username itself, lol
Hope all is clear now.
This is getting off topic so I'll leave now.

mellen · 10/09/2012 23:23

A 4 year old doesnt need anything, if they arent too cold.
IME at around 8-9 they start to wear crop tops, but maybe that varies depending on where people live.

EasterEggHuntIsOver · 10/09/2012 23:24

MmeLindor, my post was not directly aimed at you. Apologies if I caused offence, did not mean to be rude.

MmeLindor · 10/09/2012 23:31

Ok, Easter. No worries. I do hope you are a Lindt Easter Egg ;)

DD1 nothing until Late Y5 or Y6 when she had something to put in a cropped top. She owned vests, she handed them down to her sister.

DD2 sometimes was cold and wore a vest.

I bought DD2 (7) a couple of cropped tops when I got DD1 her first bra, just for fun and because she hates being left out. I had no idea, Then, that a bit of harmless pretending to be a big girl was banned by MN.

Subsequently she got a pile handed down by DD1.

So in Y3-Y5 sometimes she wore nothing, some times a cropped top, sometimes a vest. As Y5 progressed she tended more and more to want a vest or top on PE days and by Y6, I think she always did.

First law of living with DD2, leave her to it mummy's job is to buy and wash clothes, but not to comment.

Now in Y7 she just about has something to hide and I've just got a pile of white cropped tops because her summer holiday choice was bright pink and purple! Her sister wore a bra by this age and was far bigger so I've run out of hand me downs.

PerryCombover · 10/09/2012 23:55

Vest

UdderlyBanal · 11/09/2012 00:11

I spent two years helping reception children change for PE. Nobody wore anything under their top unless it was really cold. A couple of very skinny kids wore them all year round but most wore them only in Jan and Feb. Even then, plenty were clearly vet refusniks. Even at four.

So dress her in clothes she is comfortable in. Being hot at school is no fun. Amongst 240 four year olds I never saw a girl in a cropped top at four!

Bonsoir · 11/09/2012 06:36

In this warm weather, my 4 year old DD would have worn nothing under her shirt. But, in general, she wears a pair of pants and a matching vest every day.

sassytheFIRST · 11/09/2012 07:12

At 4, nothing under a school shirt unless very cold in which case a vest.

Dd1 is 10 and has just started wearing a crop top to cover her completely flat chest on PE days (her choice). Dd2 still bare chested under her shirt - she's 7.

QuinionsRainbow · 11/09/2012 13:35

Our DCs had stopped wearing vests before they started school. I remember the occasion, shortly before DS moved up to Comprehensive school, when SIL arrived for a visit armed with a bundle of vests for him that her son (our nephew) had outgrown - she was more than slightly flabbergasted, offended even, when said DS stated in no uncertain terms that vests were for wimps!

Beanbagz · 11/09/2012 13:39

10 year old (Y6) - wouldn't wear a vest unless it was thick with snow. At 4 she was just the same and wasn't bothered about getting changed as a class at all.

She's only just gone into crop tops and they change seperately (have done since Y3)

timetosmile · 11/09/2012 13:41

Quinions Grin are you in The North?

I have a family of vest refusniks too.

littleducks · 11/09/2012 13:55

DD wears vests to school. In reception she normally had a thermal short sleeve one, now a traditional sleeveless shaped one.

As despite the rest of the school being warm reception was a bit chilly as they had the patio doors open for access to outside play/learning area (a requiremnet of EYFS?) all day except when it actually snowed. In fact dd spent most of her time outside in wellies, which I was thrilled about and encouraged by giving her a nice warm coat and layers.

She still wears a vest despite being allowed outside alot less, as she prefers it when changing, if something spills she has another layer and if her shirt disapears Hmm when changing she has something on under her jumper. But she hates wearing other peoples clothes/something from the spare/lost property box which is the schools solution if clothes are soiled/lost.

withjamin · 11/09/2012 18:49

I have a sleeve/cuff-hating dd so am planning on getting some naice vests (to counteract the boring boring uniform ) soon. Vests rock, sleeves suck.

ThisIsMummyPig · 11/09/2012 20:43

Thank you for your replies. I had no idea it could be such a can of worms.

My 5 year old likes to wear as little underclothing as possible whilst at school apparently (!)
