Jacket for rugby-watching

tak1ngchances · 09/09/2012 21:49

DH has got really into rugby and will be playing every weekend this season. I'll be a good dutiful wife and go support him for a few matches.
I want to be nice and cosy AND look nice. Last year I wore a nasty down filled coat that was warm but looked very drab. Some of the other supporters had lovely stylish warm gear.
Any suggestions?

I've got the barbour arctic parka. Its down filled but pretty nice as warm coats go.

tak1ngchances · 09/09/2012 21:51

I like that Mrs CB! What about boots

I've got Merrel Prevoz boots which are fantastically warm, and even as a cold footed person, wore them in snow with thin socks and was toasty. They are also waterproof

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/09/2012 22:00

I've got timberland boots which I have sheepskin insoles in

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 09/09/2012 22:08

Boots that are easily cleaned to cope with the mud. I have red hunter wellies with sheepskin lining, so I can kick them off at the club house doors for post match beer. For home matches, coffee and tea and sandwich or burger making, they are just as comfortable.

tak1ngchances · 09/09/2012 22:16

Ok I have hunters and linings/welly socks but Honestly with those and a longer length coat I would look like a mushroom. I was thinking of boots with a chunky heel, do-able? Or ridiculous...?

I wear a lands end down coat. Snow boots from next or hunters with leopard liners.

Here. Warm. And wipe cleanable

BonnyDay · 09/09/2012 22:21

Taking chances have you done a winter rugby season yet?

OwedToAutumn · 09/09/2012 22:21

FFS, I have been at rugby festivals with DS where rain has dripped off my nose.

Warm and dry. Bugger stylish!

AllHailTheOlympiansMumsnet · 09/09/2012 22:23

My mum used to wear a snood back in the day for rugby watching.

BonnyDay · 09/09/2012 22:23

I agree. Put some make up on. Wear a scarf. Smile.
You'll look nice.
You have NO IDEA what you're getting into cold wise

BonnyDay · 09/09/2012 22:24

Plus your kid will smear mud all over you as you tie laces etc

BonnyDay · 09/09/2012 22:25

Oh it's to watch your husband ?!

Ha ha ha!!
laughs

Fgs leave him to it.

Theas18 · 09/09/2012 22:26

"cosy and look nice"... at a rugby match in winter, I'd say these 2 are mutually exclusive!

Get yourself down to the outdoors shop and by the biggest most padded down coat you can- and make sure it's long not waist/hip length.

weblette · 09/09/2012 22:28

Look nice? Sorry but give it a few rainy/cold/snowy/frosty days and you won't give a shit what you look like, no one else does.

tak1ngchances · 09/09/2012 22:50

Oh man now you are all laughing at me. I went and froze my ass off last year. I just looked minging while other people looked cosy and stylish. It is possible!!!
I've got to go support DH because he had a pretty bad injury and spent the whole year getting fit & strong again and he needs some cheering from the sidelines Smile

Cold feet will be the problem, don't even think about wearing wellies. You need something seriously insulating.

BonnyDay · 10/09/2012 07:25

But you said you were in warm clothes. ?

tak1ngchances · 10/09/2012 11:35

Yes Bonny, I was responding to the posters who were asking if I knew what I was letting myself in for with the cold. I know it's so bone marrow-chillingly cold that nothing can really protect you!

OP posts:
Waspie · 10/09/2012 11:44

I've got a Buffalo shirt Buffalo Systems and never been cold. I wear my team's shirt over the top.

Not sure stylish and rugby go together. I would rather be warm. On my feet I wear walking socks and Timberland boots and can usually feel my toes by the end of the match, even in January.

Waspie · 10/09/2012 11:52

oh and thermal leggings under ronhill trousers are good. If it's raining jeans are horrid because they stay wet for so long and you get so cold. Walking trousers over a thermal layer will dry much more quickly.

MadAboutHotChoc · 10/09/2012 16:39

A rugby Mum here who spends most weekend mornings outside in all kinds of freezing cold and wet weather.

Fields get very muddy and you will get splattered so I wear my long down padded coat and lined hunter wellies. I also wear thermal long johns and long sleeved vests. Everyone dresses warmly and do not care what you look like.

lilolilmanchester · 10/09/2012 16:45

have spent more happy hours on rugby sidelines than I care to remember. I had a layered jacket examples here to give warmth, waterproofing and layers I can go from freezing to overheating in a nano-second!

SrirachaGirl · 10/09/2012 16:51

I have this. Warmest, coziest parka ever, but stylish too. It's a little pricey upfront but you will never have to buy another winter coat again.
