Good quality basic t shirts

I don't doubt that this has been done to death, but does anyone have any recommendations? I usually buy the M&S ones which are fine, but they only last so many washes before they go a bit crinkly and manky. They're only a fiver each, but that doesn't really seem the point if we're trying to save the planet etc.

I had some basic ones from Gap and they were truly awful - the white one was sooo thin and the black one fell apart after about three wears.

I have some from next which seem to be lasting well

PretzelTime · 09/09/2012 19:03

I'd like to know too

TuttiFrutti · 09/09/2012 19:17

H & M are the best.

maryquant · 09/09/2012 19:22

I second H & M.

PretzelTime · 09/09/2012 19:22

Really? They seem so thin. Like everything else out there, even posher brands use very thin fabric in their tops now.

Bunbaker · 09/09/2012 19:25

I have never had a problem with the quality of M & S T-shirts. Mine have lasted for years. I agree that in general T-shirts seem to be made of much thinner material these days. Gap ones fit me well, but are very thin and don't last for more than a couple of years.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2012 19:33

Gap ones are dreadful. M&S Limited Edition used to do good ones but have stopped, although I've seen a couple in their Indigo Collection which look similar to the old Ltd ones - not tried them though. I tend to get mine in Hobbs - not cheap though.

I really want a good quality, thick white camisole - but it seems to be an impossible dream nowadays.

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/09/2012 20:09

For proper cotton Dorothy Perkins is pretty good.

I like the drape of modal which jigsaw tend to do as its not uber clingy.

I quite like h&m too.

I've done the more £££ brands in the sales but don't fine them worth the money.

Oh and zara always worth a look.

Remus - Isabella Oliver worth a look and also white co and boden.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2012 20:40

The White Company had a lovely one - but 20 odd pounds for a cami seems such a lot, when I only wear it under something else anyway. Will have a look at Boden, though it pains me to do so! :)

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/09/2012 20:42

Red3 is 20% off white co

I find so many basic t shirts simply too short. I like them to finish at my hip.

M&s, for example, only just touch the waistband of my jeans, and they aren't particularly low cut.

Apart from Isabella Oliver (v expensive at £50 a pop) has anyone seen any good, basic longline tshirts out there?

Sorry to hijack, op. Smile

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 10/09/2012 08:26

Another one recommending H&M. Their strappy vests for layering are even better.

LadyEmmaHamilton · 10/09/2012 20:21

No probs notjust, length is also a thing I struggle with snurk

Actually, like someone else upthread, I have had good t-shirts from Dorothy Perkins, which are nice and long. I just wondered if anyone had found the perfect t shirt for, say £15, that was so worth it that I might investigate.

Back to Dotty P's then. But they invariably have mostly terrible colours beside the black and white ones.

I got good ones in uniqlo last year.

Shakey1500 · 10/09/2012 20:25

Curious also, I've not found a decent quality basic white t-shirt for years.

I like the ones that are a bit longer and also prefer a slash neck.

notjustamummythankyou · 10/09/2012 20:44

ladyemma - on the back of this thread, went into dotty p's today and came away with two longline t shirts for £14. Good fabric, not too thin and long - Hurrah!

You're right about colours though: apart from black and white, the options were, er, lavender or a strange nude colour. I do not want to look like I'm topless and, I'm sure, nor does anyone else ....

notjustamummythankyou · 10/09/2012 20:46

(want to see me topless I mean, not want to be topless themselves. Well, they might, but ... Ooh stop wittering, notjust ... )

AmberNectarine · 10/09/2012 21:06

I am a committed purchaser of Vince t-shirts. Outrageous price but they are thick and flattering and they really wash and wear well. I also like American Vintage for the range of colours, but the quality isn't as good as Vince.

For vests though, you cannot beat the long £3.99 jobs from H&M. I have about 20 and I will not buy any others now.

slug · 10/09/2012 21:19

Uniqulo. I'm still wearing ones I bought six years ago and they still look good. Cheap too.
