Where do 30 year olds shop/what do they wear?

Hi,
I'm looking for some help, I'm about to turn 30 but still dress in jeans and a t-shirt everyday, most of the shirts the same ones I have worn since I was 17.
I want to look more stylish but whatever I pick I feel like a little girl pretending to be a grown up, I don't wear make up for the same reason. I don't have any sisters or female friends to ask for help. My mum dresses very young for her age so often I think things are suited to 50 somethings when they would look ok on me.
I don't have a clue but don't feel comfortable dressed like a teenager anymore.
Please help :-)
PS I am 5'5 size 12-14 and am a flabby hourglass shape (44, 35, 43)

I'm 30 and I wear skinny jeans all the time. In summer I wear them with sandals, ballet pumps and converse and in winter with ankle boots and sometimes when its very, very cold with knee high boots over the top.

I wear blouses with them usually, or smart-ish t-shirts from somewhere Mango or Zara, sometimes River Island or Dorothy Perkins. In winter I layer with knitted jumpers. Its a fairly easy but foolproof wardrobe. Never look really put together and polished but never look a raggamuffin.

I avoid slogans and silly patterns on clothes, like this because I feel I'm too old for them now and they look tacky. I prefer plainer clothes now, less flashy than when I was younger.

Whitamakafullo · 08/09/2012 19:39

I'm the same age (I'll be 30 in January) and I still shop in place such as New Look, Top Shop, Primark etc. I wear jeans, shorts and tights with boots, dresses,, cardiagans, converse......anything really!

Thirty is still young, no reason to change yourself if you don't want to. It's all about attitude and how you carry yourself Smile

Whitamakafullo · 08/09/2012 19:40

I like that jersery TheBlackCompany!

MissHairspray · 08/09/2012 19:40

I've really struggled turning 30, mainly because Topshop just seems wrong now and I'm fed up with crap quality high street stuff but don't have a huge budget.
Anyhoo, top tip no1 - blazers! If you get one of those jersey type ones in a neutral colour they will smarten up your jeans and t shirts and probably go with a load of other stuff too.

MissHairspray · 08/09/2012 19:44

But should have also said that no need to ditch the jeans and trainers just because you're turning 30!

I agree MissHairspray, somehow TopShop seems too teenage now. The other thing I've struggled with is finding a magazine that caters for me. If I choose a Glamour or Red or something like that the clothes are out of my budget and the articles are all about ticking time bomb of fertility, sleeping with your boss, what to do when your OH just doesn't want to settle down etc. None of which applies to me.

The next step appears to be Easy Living or Essentials, where I immediately feel 15 years too young for it. Its like I've fallen between the cracks.
I want a magazine for 30 somethings, with a young-ish family, fairly normal budget but who still wants to look up to date and stylish. Don't think one exists though!

Twonker · 08/09/2012 20:13

If its sale time, I'll have a really good look in monsoon. I've grown out of tk Maxx. I do also find the odd thing I like in marks and spencer. . . Particularly 'grown up ' jeans and jumpers.

Good luck finding some outfits you feel comfortable in.

Anotherusefulname · 08/09/2012 20:16

Thank you, glad to know I'm not the only one.
I think I will ditch the slogan shirts and maybe go for some plain ones.
I also agree about the magazines, I stopped reading cosmopolitan because it didn't apply to me anymore but there is nothing to take its place.

I like White Stuff, Fat Face and the Mantaray range from Debenhams, but they're not particularly cheap.

Geordieminx · 08/09/2012 20:18

Zara, h&m, warehouse, oasis, French connection, new look, Dorothy Perkins

gindrinker · 08/09/2012 20:26

I'm nearly 29. I still dress pretty much the same as I did at 21. Straight jeans with pumps or converse, skinnies in winter with boots (coyboy or uggs)
Teeshirts or jersey tops (I've moved on to gap rather than H+M)
I also wear teadresses with boots or ballet pumps and denim hotpants with tights.
I'm a newlook, gap, primark, bit or oasis, debinhams, house or fraser etc. I'm a bit of a natural scruff/indie rock chick and really need a new coat this winter... Maybe faux fur, duffle or new leather bomber?
I've never got on with the fit of topshop clothes despite being 5'8'' and pretty slim.

Meggles76 · 08/09/2012 20:27

I'm 35 so have been through the turning 30! I think you can still shop in all the high st places but just need to choose more carefully.
My day to day 'look' is Skinny jeans or slim fit chinos. I get them from Topshop or Next mainly. In the summer months I wear with vests, Ts and pretty blouses from Boden, Next, Zara, Warehouse or Oasis. Footwear is low wedge leather sandals from Clarks or Ash genials. I also like quirky print scarves that add interest and pull an outfit together. White Stuff, Accessorize, John Lewis and H&M all do good ones. In winter I wear with long sleeve fitted shirts, fitted cashmere sweaters or breton stripes. Try M&S, H&M, Next, Gap or White Stuff. I wear with heeled ankle boots from Ash.
I also have a black jersey blazer from Topshop that goes with all of the above.
For going out or smarter days, I wear quirky print dresses and opaques. Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Monsoon Fusion all have them. I wear with brogues, heeled ankle boots wedge courts. Or I wear slim fit black trousers and lace tops.

Catypillar · 08/09/2012 20:29

I'm also 30, I like a lot of the shops mentioned already, also Uniqlo, Promod, Gap, All Saints (only in the sale), Nomads (nice silk tops and dresses), TK Maxx (if accompanied by very stylish friend who can find the amazing designer stuff in among all the crap), Red Herring, George at Asda (some suprisingly nice things there). Work clothes from Phase Eight, Mint Velvet, Hobbs, Pepperberry, Oasis.

StrawberryMojito · 08/09/2012 20:36

I'm 33. I have a small waist and big hips so I like 'curvy' jeans from GAP. I also like Dorothy Perkins, Oasis, Debenhams, Fat Face, and Ted Baker when I am feeling flush. Next is good for work wear and footwear but I'm not keen on their casual and going out ranges.

QueenofPlaids · 08/09/2012 20:41

I'm not much past 30' also flabby hourglass.

For work (I work in an office environment) I love Hobbs & Jaeger, but choose carefully because some of their stuff seems a bit 'older' if you know what I mean. I go for wrap dresses, straight skirts, tops with Lycra (I am booby, so whilst I have some shirts, shirt shopping is a nightmare) and cropped / fitted jackets.

Outside of work, nice jeans with bootcut or a slight flare. I love Levi's Made & Crafted and 7 For All Mankind, who somehow manage to make bootcuts without looking mumsy.

To be honest I've not hugely changed my style since early 20s, because I believe in dressing for my figure moreso than my age. If I lost a bit, I would merrily get back into my mini-skirts for example.

For random casual, White Stuff is pretty good if you like that look.

The only things I would tend to avoid are the obviously teenage e.g. Tiny hot pants with the pockets hanging out over tights, really unstructured t-shirts that don't allow for supportive undergarments (prob okay if you're an A / B cup).

TheBirdsTheBirds · 09/09/2012 01:46

I'm 30 and I still love a lot of Topshop, just tend to avoid anything too out there and teenagery/sparkly. But I love loads of their dresses and blouses. My uniform is usually above the knee printed dresses with opaque black tights and ballet flats, or skinny jeans with a slouchy jumper and ballet flats or ankle boots. Also love cute vintagey playsuits. I do sometimes wonder if I should still be wearing them at 30, but we're not exactly over the hill yet! If you love tshirts and jeans OP there's no reason you should force yourself into 'grown up' styles that make you feel uncomfortable or old.
