Thanks to you lovely ladies my sister is on her way to getting her dress to get wed in and now I'm back for help for me!

I need a magic dress/outfit which will do for dsis's reception and for a presentation I have to make in a couple of weeks.

Presentation is in a fairly "hip" non profit organisation and wedding reception is relaxed "trendy" affair. So I suppose I need something not boden mum but not Katy Perry.

I'm 40, 5 2" absolutely no norks with a little bit of a stomach but about size 8/10 depending on the shop.

Blessings on all of your goats if you can find the magic non existent clothing I need.

budhasbelly · 07/09/2012 19:34

Off to put dd to her bed, will have a good look at your lovely links when I get back and promise faithfully to actually order something this evening.

Please keep em coming as it appears to be confirmed that I have no taste.

Think soho chic people not pretty, can't do pretty!

TK Maxx might be what you need....
grey lace grey print grey occasion dress - and there are tons more - have a look

IShallPracticeMyCurtsey · 07/09/2012 19:57

OP, I'm just wondering. Does the trendy young hipster crowd in particular have you anxious/doubting yourself about what to wear?
I would say try not to take the hipsters into account when figuring out what looks best on you and will be appropriate to both occasions. In my experience, trying to dress trendily to fit in with a hipster crowd is exhausting. If you're not one of life's natural hipsters, that is. I think you should go for something quite classic and well-cut and then wear some fuck-off shoes to add spice.

Anyway, I am wondering, from your description of your figure, if you have good arms/shoulders - I'd say maybe you do? Something about the neckline of this Massimo Dutti dress says 'confident arty person' (but not insufferable hipster) to me. Would it work for you?

budhasbelly · 07/09/2012 20:20

Your right IShall, that's it exactly.
Thing is dh and in-laws are all media types and when we socialise say in Shoreditch fucking house, may a curse be on the place, I'm always either slightly over dressed or too conservatively and just want to get it right once.

I'm far from a natural hipster but need something that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

Will look at links in a minute!

I do like the Massimo Dutti dress, and the model has no boobs either and it looks great. Very Kristin Scott Thomas. Would wear with red lipstick and a vaguely 1930s hairstyle a la Drew (scroll down). Minus the accessories.

budhasbelly · 07/09/2012 21:04

Nearly sold on the Massimo but what about a jacket or cardigan? Would you go blazer? Colour?

Thank you everyone by the way, sorry to make your eyes bleed with the navy prison suit still like it.

Love massimo. Would do very soft short jacket. I have a jersey one with bracelet sleeves from uniqlo of all
Places

MrsLettuce · 07/09/2012 21:08

Yeah, the Massimo dress is pretty much perfect! Agree with sort short jacket. Killer heels of course. How high can you go?

IShallPracticeMyCurtsey · 07/09/2012 21:09

Oh yes, what Bonny said sounds lovely.

BonnyDay · 07/09/2012 21:50

I went to very swanky do at the Opera in Paris. The women in stripper style heels looked ludicrous. And not chic
Not too high

MrsLettuce · 07/09/2012 21:56

No! Very, very high heels are ludicrous. Killer doesn't necessarily equal high at all in my book at all.

budhasbelly · 07/09/2012 22:02

I have a pair of chunky heeled mid high ankle boots that I was thinking of. Never do high high shoes as can't be doing with the tottering look it gives me.

MrsLettuce · 07/09/2012 22:04

Sounds good!

IShallPracticeMyCurtsey · 07/09/2012 22:12

Yes, those could work. I was going to suggest a low/mid-heel T-bar but maybe that's pushing the Kristin theme a bit too far.
