(This prompted by the Liz earle thread and the fact I can't face the mirror these days)

I really really want to know if anyone suffers from the same skin problems I do, and what they use - so please bear with the grim details. I did look it up on Google but nothing was forthcoming apart from smallpox

I basically have nice skin, in the sense of small pores, not too greasy, no patches, even tone etc. etc.

But I am very, very prone to a particular sort of spot which seems to be related to sensitive skin.

In 32 years I have tried everything from Clinique and Liz Earle through to Simple, Clearasil, old fashioned cold cream, rosewater toner and oil cleansing, and nothing really seems to help, although I have figured out that I cannot use anything harsh (I can't even exfoliate, even if it says 'sensitive' on the bottle).

But the thing is I get the WEIRDEST spots. I either get a normal pimple or a tiny whitehead usually prompted by cream or make up. Then it gets infected. It heals. THEN, right, this is the gross bit - it won't heal properly because inside is a tiny little hard white ball or plug. The skin won't close over it, so it gets very red and irritated and flaky, and itches like anything - you can see a kind of hole with a white thing lurking in it. This can go on for about three or four weeks.

The only thing that will make it heal is if I literally dig and pick at it until the little plug comes out, and then it will heal over. But by that stage it will be a seriously inflamed bright red often bleeding patch, and takes ages to scab over and heal, and then leaves a scar Sad

At the moment I am sporting an English Rose complexion (I am quite fair) marred by about 9 very, very bright red scars and scabs.

Does anyone else get this? How can I stop these plug things forming? Is it scar tissue? I can't afford a dermatologist btw, or I'd be there like a shot!

Oh and I am not hairy, I'm actually underweight, I had difficulty conceiving (secondary infertility) and spotty skin - that's all! Although after treatment I did go on to conceive so anything is possible :)

Pinot · 07/09/2012 13:07

Oh, I don't have coarse skin or dry hair. But I do have chin hairs like a character in bloody Macbeth Hmm :o And I am tubby, but then I'm a reet greedy cow.

AWimbaWay · 07/09/2012 13:15

I want to know how pinot made the fluffy kitten appear! (and I also have crap spotty flakey skin)

coffeeinbed · 07/09/2012 13:25

Have you tried rosehip oil, btw?
It should help with this.

HazeltheMcWitch · 07/09/2012 13:53

JODIE DO NOT EXFOLIATE YOUR FACE WITH SCRATCHY SUGAR

Yup I am shouting! What are you doing, you mad thing? Sugar is all jaggedy and sharp. Also, a flannel is not that soft either. Be nice to your skin, don't scrape the hell out if it!

If you think you need to exfoliate, use a muslin cloth to gently wipe ofyour cleanser, and/or a very gentle scrub, scrubbbed gently. I like Demalogica's Daily Microfoliant, which I use max 1x pw.

AWimbaWay · 07/09/2012 13:54

Ooh, I've been wanting to ask about rosehip oil! Do you need to mix it with another oil or can you just apply it on it's own, if you do mix it what ratios and which carrier oil would people recommend? Thank you.

HazeltheMcWitch · 07/09/2012 13:54

OOh, ooh, just remembered. Silicone. I hate it, it makes my skin go dreadful and really really spotty with itchy spots. Jodes, you're not using anything like a primer are you?

JodieHarsh · 07/09/2012 13:56
Grin

That was about a decade ago Hazel but you're right, I feel it would not be best approach just at the moment! I will try sort of buffing with a muslin cloth and see what help that does it..

Yes I'm wearing primer every day Shock Shock Is that bad? I need it to make my Bare Minerals stick Sad

I haven't yet tried rosehip oil which is of the oddness since I am normally right on any MN fad!

Loving the tip re nizoral btw, I have a patch of spots on my upper back/shoulder area (mm nice) that are really really persistent. By which I mean permanent. I am going to Nizoral them to hell and see what happens!

Pinot · 07/09/2012 13:57

AWimbaWasy - I just whack rosehip oil on my face, like a serum. I think that's de rigeur.

Here's a lovely pic of Marilyn to cheer us all up. In my Files, I called this "Woman".

Pinot · 07/09/2012 13:58

no no primers - a coating of Mineral Veil to absorb oil, then BM (well, LilyLolo for me as it doesn't block pores), then Mineral Veil to finish. Like a sandwich.

HazeltheMcWitch · 07/09/2012 14:01

ER primer, all I know is it's bad for me. It contains loads of silicone, which is what makes it feel velvety smooth. I use it and I have lovely smooth skin for a couple of days and beautifully adhered makeup... then I get odd angry under the skin spots. Then I stop using it and those spots clear up.

Maybe it's worth a try stopping using it? Which primer is it, btw?

HazeltheMcWitch · 07/09/2012 14:01

ER = Re

JodieHarsh · 07/09/2012 14:11

Am ROARING at Pinot having a file marked WOMAN Grin Grin

I would be SO thrilled if I could do without Primer, not least because it costs a fucking fortune. I use the Bare Min one.

I will definitely give it a go (skipping primer for Pinot's sandwich method)...

Thanks Pinot, will be purchasing some sharpish. I'm feeling Envy at you picture posting powers though.

Pinot · 07/09/2012 14:29

Marilyn is Woman I even loved that TV Show about a fictional Broadway show about her. Dang but I forget it's name.

The BM primer is crapola imo. I've been using OC8 mattifying gel for the last 7 months and haven't broken out once. My skin is really oily though so I need it to stop me looking like I've stuck my face in chip fat but it primes my skin fantastically too. And is only £10 and lasts around 4 months. I use the Lily Lolo matte finishing powder on top of it, then the foundation, then finish with another layer of finishing powder.

Are you using the matte BM Jodie? If not, it could well be the bismuth that you're reacting too you know. I can't rate Lily Lolo highly enough, it's bismuth free plus it's way cheaper than BM Wink

fruitpastille · 07/09/2012 14:38

I recently started with spots in mid 30s and my gp was great about it. I thought i was being a bit precious but they were happy to help even though it wasn't that severe. A few months of low dose antibiotics got rid of them and now i am keeping them away with a different pill and antibiotic cream. Go to your doctor!

Deux · 07/09/2012 14:41

Just about the Nizoral, in case not clear.

I put the LATHER on afflicted areas and not the shampoo straight. And not for very long as I was worried that skin would just burn off. I think I only left it on for 2 minutes and not very long on my face, I just rubbed it around a bit then rinsed off. It's very strong. Hair was a bit limp afterwards.

Pinot · 07/09/2012 14:45

Smash! Yes! Love it. My olde brain thanks you :o

AWimbaWay · 07/09/2012 14:48

A ha, I see

JodieHarsh · 07/09/2012 14:48

I wasn't too sure about Smash. I couldn't see anything not to love about a musical show about Marilyn with Grace in it and everything, but just ended up not watching it Confused

If people go to their GP with problem skin are you taken seriously? I've been meaning to go about mine for ages but feel a bit like I'm wasting their time. Are they likely to prescribe cream or tablets do you think? I never had spots as a teenager but now I get terrible hormonal breakouts that are leaving scars.
