What's the deal with peplums?

What is this? Why have little hip roofs been appearing on tops and skirts and dresses?

Can those with actual hips wear it without looking weird?

I don't understand. For years they were on The List of Things To Be Avoided if you have hips. For years before that, they were on the List of Things to Wear If You're Going to a Dynasty Party.

Now I think they just exist to make the over 30s feel decrepit.

Man, i'm glad I'm not alone. They're everywhere

I know Cheryl Cole (or not Cole, apparently now she's just Cheryl FFS) where's them, but she's about the size of a small cat, so she can't count

where have they come from and why?

It's a fashion/style mystery to me. That and BB cream. What the hell is BB cream?

I think Vicky B is partially to blame for peplums: they're a real 'i'm so thin, me, I can get away with making my hips look even bigger, tee hee' style. Although she may have ripped them off Roland Mouret like everything else.

There's definitely a Venn diagram where the worlds of Joan Collins and Victoria Beckham meet. Didn't she once say she felt like Dame Joan's lost lovechild?

For people like me with boxy bodies they are a godsend.
I'm able to have curves straight from Mad Men.
May they never go away.
Currently own 4 peplum tops. Hmm

And Dr Jart BB cream is quite good - many others are not Wink

I like them. Blush

I'm short and slight with no waist or hips, but I have massive boobs.

Peplum tops balance me out and add the illusion of bottom half curves. Then I dont look so top heavy.

AbsofAwesomeness · 05/09/2012 17:46

Okay, so in summary they're fine if you don't have hips/need to emphasise hips. Probs a massive no no if you have, what your mother charmingly described as "child-bearing" hips. Their origin is VB Roland Mouret

Now I get it.

Loving the phrase 'hip roofs' ! Great description OPGrin

I can't see how they can flatter anyone other than those with matchstick figures. I think they are one eighties fashion that definitely should have been left there.

FrancesFarmer · 05/09/2012 19:17

I have nothing against a small figure-enhancing peplum if it works for one's body type but the huge stiff peplums I see on so many fashion blogs just scream fashion victim.
