Unique and interesting scents

I've been a loyal Clinique aromatics elixir wearer for years but I'd like to treat myself to something new and unusual for my 40th. I've been trying some Miller Harris ones: Terre d'iris and l'air de rien and I like them but I don't find them irresistible, can't stop smelling your wrist gorgeous. In the past I've liked coco First, Samsara and even (whisper it) Poison! I don't like anything too floral or vanilla. I do like warm sensual scents with patchouli, amber and cedar.

Any ideas maybe from Caron or vintage
Guerlain or Chanel?

Faustina En passant smells of lilac and warm brioche - lovely!
MrsArse, you just inspired me to take Mrs Therese to bed. This is a magnificent one too - I keep smelling echoes of Eau Sauvage (that I love) and Diorella (that I do not) - as jasmines go, this is great - my other favorite jasmine is Serge's A la Nuit.

Love love this thread - keep the fine ideas coming!

blissieblue · 04/09/2012 22:22

I love Aromatics Elixir - have had a bottle of it on the go for pretty much the last 25 years! For a change I love Keiko Mecheri, Patchoulissime. It's £90 I think but have only seen it in Liberty. I've also got Tocca, Cleopatra on my wish list. Watching this thread with interest!

sweetunsweet · 04/09/2012 23:04

God, I could live in Liberty's perfume section! En Passant is indeed wonderful, as is Serge Luten's Five o'clock au Gingembre.

Miller Harris Feuilles de Tabac is deeply gorgeous and sexy.

It's over the price range, but Chanel's Coromandel makes me want to nick the tester every time.

pinkhousesarebest · 04/09/2012 23:38

Another vote for Artisan Parfumeur - Tea for two is perfect in Autumn.

Guerlain's Pamplune in summer.

MsArseBiscuit · 05/09/2012 06:42

Oh god, S&B is going to cost me even more money, I'm going to have to smell all of these, and I bought a bottle of Eau d'Hermes from eBay after someone on here said it smelled 'filthy'.

Emsyj, if you're in Manchester for work then head straight for Harvey Nichols and the Selfridges ( has a fabulous new-ish fragrance section on the lower floor ) in the city centre. They both have plenty of niche fragrances.
DonaAna, I think you should have a perfume thread even if it's only so I can make notes and then shamelessly nick your style.

faustina · 05/09/2012 06:59

I made the big mistake of taking ds2 into Liberty when he was about 16 and letting him roam around the scents. He's now a 20 yr old student with tastes WAY above his income. He has a very good nose for it though - currently loving Terre d'Hermes

WAD · 05/09/2012 10:13

Sisley Eau de Soir is 'can't stop sniffing your wrist' for me...

DonaAna · 05/09/2012 10:34

Oooh lovely things mentioned here - keep them coming. Would lovely to keep this thread alive, such inspiring things!
Faustina I love Terre (and wear it myself occasionally - a friend gave me a bottle. I have a thing for Iso E Super. If you have a chance, try Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules and Eau de Campagne by Sisley, they are variations of the same theme. The Molecule is pure Iso E Super).
WAD I need to try Eau de Soir - for some reason have overlooked that.
MrsArse, I have a lot of perfumes mentioned on this thread. If perfumes are your drug of choice they certainly are mine, purchasing (and exchanging) samples is a good way of getting to know the really good stuff if you don't live near a good parfumerie or department store. Most perfume houses have sampling programs, Les Senteurs does too.
Blissie I have met Keiko Mecheri once... she has a perfume called Canyon Dreams that I really love.
Pink L'Artisan is one of the oldest niche perfume lines - I love many of their things - Dzing and Safron Troublant are perhaps my favorites but I also like the light and summery L'Eau de l'Artisan.
Sweet I have a full bottle of Coromandel, gorgeous gorgeous scent. It was my gateway drug to the really good stuff Hmm

brighthair · 05/09/2012 14:27

I wear Lush the smell of weather turning which always gets comments and 25:43 as well. Breath of God is amazing

Levantine · 05/09/2012 15:40

I nipped out to Lush this lunchtime - I have 25:43 on now, I love it. It is still changing on me and I put it on a couple of hours ago

brighthair · 05/09/2012 16:00

25:43 according to my work colleagues smells like "candy floss, toffee apples or cinnamon" depending what day it is Grin
Although one of the men just said it smelt "fit" Blush

MsArseBiscuit · 05/09/2012 16:06

DonaAna, I'm another Terre lover although it has rather been spoilt for me by being worn by a

MsArseBiscuit · 05/09/2012 16:08

That looks like I was about to say something exciting but I was only going to add that it was worn by the ginormous wankface who is my ex.

candytuft63 · 06/09/2012 00:36

Try a perfume called Tabu. You can buy it online, and it is beautiful. I am a big fan of fragrance and love what you do. I am certain you will like it Smile

QueenieLovesEels · 06/09/2012 06:52

I have just bought a bottle of Amber Oud from the Body Shop. It is spicy and it long-lasting. A bit tobacco-y at first but the dry down is lovely.

My favourite perfumes are Aromatics Elixir, Opium, original Fendi and Mitsouko to give you an idea.

faustina · 06/09/2012 08:40

mrsarsebiscuit - I feel the same way about eau sauvage - such a shame!

Firsttimer7259 · 06/09/2012 08:47

If you live near a Harrod, harvey nicks or similar try out some Annick Ghoutal. Proper perfume not chemically - ignore the packaging - there are a lot of florals but there is darker stuff too. Beautiful real perfume

MadameOvary · 06/09/2012 08:52

Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens is just beautiful.
My friend wears Eau de Soir. It's gorgeous on her.
I bought some Iso-e-super and perfumers alcohol to make my own Molecule 01. I use it as an ingredient when I'm making my own deodorant too. It's lovely.
(Aware that making own deodorant = really precious Grin)

DonaAna · 06/09/2012 09:03

Love SL Ambre Sultan too - but for me it's winter only. Someone read my mind and gave me a free sample (with another purchase) last week - that will be just enough to tide me over this winter I think Grin

Whirliwig72 · 10/09/2012 18:43

Got my samples today from Les Senteurs. Grin
I like Frederic Malle Angeliques sous la Pluie very much. Very clean and green without being brash.

i have about 10 caron perfumes and love, adore, tabac blond (husband gasped at the bill in roja dove!) and en avion. the rest can seem a little dowager aunt.

if i had 100 to spend i'd get down les scenteurs and buy a full bottle of andy tauers l'air du desert marocain

and i adore ormonde jayne woman (burlington arcade)

i'm a lutens nutter and have 15 of his and would recommend muscs kublai khan or arabie or ambre sultan if you like the queen of sheba aesthetic.

and if you do, you must try the amouage line in selfridges

on my wish list is 1740 by l'histoires de parfum and une fleur de cassie by frederic malle.

otchayaniye · 10/09/2012 20:33

donaana, i make a point of wearing ambre sultan in the heat. i think it brings the grassy scorchiness out.

(used to live in singapore, so no sense of winter versus summer)
