Quick question - where do your clothes live?

I have 2 hours child free and instead of sleeping I've, stupidly, decided to sort out my wardrobe which is currently on my bedroom / landing floor

So.....Where do you clothes live?

Trousers and tops in drawers or hung? How do I decide what goes in the wardrobe? I have 10 drawers and a double wardrobe.

Please can I just copy what you guys do so I don't have to figure it out myself!

Thank you Flowers

I have a double wardrobe. Jumpers are on the top shelf; skirts, dresses, shirts/tops hung up; jeans folded on lower shelf with t-shirts and gym gear. I have a drawer for undies and another for socks.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 04/09/2012 12:37

pants, bras, socks in bedside drawers. Jeans, shorts, trousers, joggies, swimwear in the main chest of drawers. Skirts, tops, t-shirts, blouses, dresses, etc are hung in the wardrobe

Bonsoir · 04/09/2012 12:41

My clothes all live in my dressing room (a very large walk-in wardrobe) - we built in shelves, drawers and a lot of hanging rails where nearly all my clothes bar underwear hang. Large shelves above for boxes with holiday stuff etc.

sillymillyb · 04/09/2012 12:43

Right.... Im going to tackle undies, pjamas and gym stuff first then figure out what space I have left to decide the hanging / folding ratio. I don't think I have room to hang all my tops, trousers etc.

If I was braver I'd show you a picture of what Im about to tackle. You can't physically get in the spare room, never mind see the floor.....

Ten drawers and a double wardrobe? What untold luxury. I have three drawers - and half a small wardrobe. not surprisingly, clothes I wear most are on a chair in the corner.

sillymillyb · 04/09/2012 12:45

Thank you by way - and Bonsoir that sounds like heaven....

I have just moved house and everything is half unpacked / still in boxes / spread across the landing.

I hate it, but its a huge job so I've been putting it off

Double wardrobe for hanging clothes, single wardrobe with drawers for t shirts, knits, underwear and scarves, three double wardrobe-width IKEA sliding drawers for shoes, a walk-in closet for bags and coats and our linen and old strollers and winter boots.
Hanging is much better for clothes - much less creasing = less need for ironing.

I now only own 2 bras....

have figured out that if I bin all my clothes I don't have to put them away Grin

God I HATE this! Nothing fits, everything is scraggy primark stuff or maternity wear thats just too comfy to give up but depresses the hell out of me cos my little one is 6 mo.

Wish I'd had a sleep now instead!

Throw out all the crappy Primark and Maternity gear and just keep the good basics (and good can be something good from Primark/GAP/M&S)
You can manage with very little and just build up your wardrobe from there

scripsi · 04/09/2012 18:27

Reading this I've realised that most of my clothes in drawers I forget about and never wear. perhaps I need to get some of those wheeled clothes hanger things instead so that I actually wear the stuff.

sillymillyb · 04/09/2012 19:54

Do you have space for those scripsi? I would love everything on hangers just so I didn't have to make decisions about where stuff lived!

mindosa I suspect if I throw out all the tat and maternity wear, I may be wandering around in pjamas and not much else! All my "good" clothes are at least 2 sizes too small.... and I don't know whether to get rid of them, as they don't fit, or keep them to incentivise me which will prob never happen

I would encourage anyone who can to abandon drawers as a way of keeping clothes in current use. Drawers are hopelessly difficult to use as you cannot see your clothes; and clothes folded in piles get creased and unpleasant.

WAD · 05/09/2012 10:10

Bonsoir is right, drawers are a nightmare. You I forget what's in them.
They are OK for underwear.

As a compromise, I store underwear, gloves, tights and very heavy sweaters in them (not all together clearly!)

Everything else is on hangers.

Get wooden hangers like these (just like White Company but 25% of the price) and you can use for trousers as well (by folding over the bar).

scripsi · 05/09/2012 18:23

Bonsoir exactly, I think I am seeing the light

sillymillyb I don't really have space for lots of standalone hangers on wheels but I think I might have to put them down one side of the bedroom (though it could be a faff moving them about). My chests of drawers take less space but I am just not wearing anything in them.
