spots. I'm 34 ffs!

Hello, some skincare tips needed please! I have always had some spots. Almost always cover-up-able, but I always always have a few. It's my cheeks or jawline. I wear a light foundation (well, it feels light), I don't moisturise. I wash before bed (almost always).

Is it acne, if they are always there? My skin doesn't seem to get particularly greasy.

They disappeared completely in pregnancy, if that information helps any, and seem to get better after sun exposure.

thanks!

You could up your cleansing routine. My spots stopped when I double cleansed

whatinthewhatnow · 02/09/2012 23:42

as in washing with facewash then a cleanser?

my 'cleansing routine' atm consists of a swish over my face with whatever's closest to hand. shower gel, tonight.

I still get them at 34! Its pants! However, I would sing the praises of Aapri scrub but particularly the blemish fighting one (it's usually £4 but thiunk its half price at mo in superdrug) as it helps tp clear my skin but not too aggressively

Shower gel?! I think you need to get something a bit more face friendly. I use no 7 hot cloth cleanser and Dermalogica skin resurfacing cleanser. There are billions to choose from

cerealqueen · 03/09/2012 00:00

Washing your face with shower gel ? There is your answer. Try dove senititve soap and a hot muslin cloth and a light moisturiser. Some tea tree oil on the spots?

sweetunsweet · 03/09/2012 00:01

I'm the same age with the same problem. For me, it is hormonal and the only symptom I have of PCOS...I take anti androgens sometimes to clear my skin, but they aren't 100% effective. Might be worth asking your doc to check hormone levels.

Otherwise, I wage war daily: Clarisonic with a nice creamy cleanser, followed by Clarins moisturiser mixed with some glycolic acid, and sometimes Retin A on top. At least I look young for my age! With trouble skin, being low-maintenance doesn't really work.

A good drugstore blemish fighting moisturiser is Olay Total Effects 7 in 1 Blemish Care. Try using that following a gentle cleanse with something like Cetaphil and a muslin cloth. Shower gel can strip the oil off your face and make it overproduce oik to retaliate and therefore clog your pores.

And you must cleanse every night and morning!

Jahan · 03/09/2012 00:02

Do you have anything in your diet that may trigger them?
Both my sister and I get spots from coffee and nuts!
My skin is much better when I avoid them.

whatinthewhatnow · 03/09/2012 09:40

thank you all. Of course as soon as I wrote 'shower gel' I realised there is something pretty fundamentally wrong with my skincare regime!

Shopping list today:
good moisturiser - the olay sounds a good start
good face wash - I'll have a look for Cetaphil or try the aapri one (love a half price bargain!)

I think I'll try the double cleanse idea too, a wash then a gentle cleanser on top.

Jahan I hadn't thought about diet. I do drink quite a lot of coffee and diet coke, so I'll try and cut that out (well, I might need the morning coffee). I also have a diet which consists of very healthy home-made foods interspersed with bouts of crap (crisps, sweets, particularly at work). I need to sort out those bouts of crap I think, as it can't help, and even if it doesn't make any difference to my skin it's a good idea anyway!

I'm sure hormones do play a part, but I'm not keen on taking any hormonal treatment. I wonder whether oil of evening primrose or starflower oil caps might help?

Thanks again, I love mumsnet.

Lloyds pharmacies sell Cetaphil, Boots may do too.

miomio · 03/09/2012 09:50

I am on a course of oral and topical antibiotics to get my skin in control at the moment so I feel your pain. Tried Retin A but it didn't work for me - made my skin v scaly and sore and 100 times more spotty!

InspiredToBoot · 03/09/2012 09:53

My tip is starflower oil. Take one a day and see AMAZING results in a month. Well, it worked for me anyway... 3 for 2 in Boots at the moment... Oh and it works not just on your skin, but also on PMT.

I am the same, mine seem to be worse around my period.

I find this stuff brilliant www.superdrug.com/face/garnier-skin-naturls-pureactiv-spot-fighting-moisturiser50ml/invt/564184/

I use it everyday all over my face and the use a little rosehip oil over my dry areas and under my eyes.

The face washes in the same range are also pretty good.
