Cool coat to start secondary school !

Hi, my daughter is starting a girls secondary school and we are struggling to find her a cool coat. She likes superdry and these seem to be the in thing ? however the sleeves seem to be so long on the hooded polar windcheater she has tried on. She is supposed to wear a coat which is black or blue with no logo (think we could get away with superdry!? Has anyone got any suggestions on something trendy and cool? Help greatly appreciated !

Coats are not cool at secondary school, full stop. None of the secondary age children round here wear coats, even when it's freezing.

Musomathsci · 02/09/2012 23:28

AGree with exexpat. Whatever you buy will shortly be discarded, so don't stress about it. Teenagers don't do coats, end of..

Oh dear....I'm hoping my DD might have more sense, she's not the sort of child to suffer for her fashion and I think would go to school in her PJ's if she could.....I'm sure I will learn differently though

All 3 of my DD's have worn Super dry last winter, thankfully they still fit and they will wear then this year too. I think that if you buy coats with a label they will wear them.

youonlysingwhenyourewinning · 02/09/2012 23:43

No such thing, I'm afraid.

Frozen, wind-swept or simply pissed wet through seems to be acceptable. Just no coat.

exexpat · 02/09/2012 23:43

At age 11, and starting a new school, she may be keener than before to fit in.

Maybe wait to buy anything until after she has actually started at school and it is getting chillier, so you can see what (if anything) is the in thing to wear at her school? Otherwise you risk wasting your money because she won't wear whatever it is, and if you insist, it might get mysteriously 'lost'.

Magicmayhem · 02/09/2012 23:43

my first thought was also that teenagers don't wear coats! Smile
they tend to walk with their head down and shoulders hunched...
having said that.. superdry coats are cool

RagingDull · 02/09/2012 23:46

another one saying really dont bother but if you must (as i did! dd is 15 and i still attempt to get her into a coat!) go for whatever is in fashion.....here last winter it was barbour jackets.

she did actually wear it in the freezing weather. sort of.

aliportico · 02/09/2012 23:47

My daughter froze last year until January or so, when she finally deigned to let me buy her a Superdry jacket (lucky me!). The sleeves are long, they're supposed to cover your hands and have thumb holes.

LDNmummy · 02/09/2012 23:48

Superdry is definitely cool and I should think you can get away with it but I would double check with the school before buying as some schools are fussier than others.

WerthersUnOriginal · 02/09/2012 23:49

Coat. Dd. Secondary school.

Excuse me I think I'm going to have to find the gin.

I've waged this war before

LDNmummy · 02/09/2012 23:49

North face is another good one.

aliportico · 02/09/2012 23:50

But ds is about to start secondary, and I doubt he'll wear anything else apart from his blazer. Possibly something waterproof when cycling home in the cold and wet starts to get to him, I hope!

Eldest dd is easy - she likes to be warm and goes off wrapped in many layers of scarves and gloves and a puffa jacket, oblivious to the concept of 'fashion' or coolness :)

WerthersUnOriginal · 02/09/2012 23:58

No matter what you get it'll be 'I left it at school in my locker because I didn't want to wear it home' Repeat ad infinitum until about 10 coats are at school/gone missing. Then on the morning it's tipping down with rain and you've run out of coats (your own included have vanished into the abyss of the 'locker') dd will go to school in her blazer only which is exactly what she wanted in the first place.

Don't mention the fact she'll get wet, catch her death, looks like no-one cares about her, that you bought 10 coats and where are they. Save your breath and buy yourself a nice coat.

CointreauVersial · 02/09/2012 23:58

DS refused to wear a coat of any kind throughout Y7. Even when I dropped him at school in the snow he would only wear his coat in the car, and took it off the moment we arrived at the school gate.

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 03/09/2012 00:02

Um, all the teenage girls I know (DD included) don't wear coats to school, as there's nowhere to put them. Their lockers are so small you actually couldn't fit a coat in there.

But outside of school, SuperDry seems to be the 'popular' thing. SonDD won't wear it. Hmm

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 03/09/2012 00:03

Grin Werthers.

InkyBinky · 03/09/2012 00:08

I live close to the local secondary school and can confirm that teenages, inc DD, don't wear coats even when it's snowing. Confused They will wear hats and gloves though. They will also not wear sensible shoes ( unless they are at a festival when they will happily wear wellies even if it's sunny Hmm )
DS1 is at Uni and now wears a very, very scruffy coat.

yummumto3girls · 03/09/2012 09:50

Thanks for your responses everyone, looks like no coat is the popular option!!!

Agree with everybody else.
Ds had a coat for his first year of secondary which he never wore.
He's now in 6th and I never bought him another. None of the boys or girls will wear them,
And we live in the Highlands, he must freeze at the bus stop.

dexter73 · 03/09/2012 10:29

My dd wears thermals under her uniform. She doesn't wear a coat as they have to wear a school one with a logo on and nobody wears it. Massive scarf when it is really cold.
