Help. What do you wear to keep warm outside?

Just thinking about what I need to buy for this winter The last two winters have involved a lot of standing around watching my toddler in the playground/jump in puddles and I get so cold.

I'm usually wearing
Jeans
Boots/Wellies with thick socks or wellie warmers.
Jumper
Waterproof jacket (joules 3 in 1 so pretty thick)
Padded gilet over the top
Hat, scarf & gloves.

Ive not updated this for 8+ yrs so what's new in keeping warm?

I've seen a lot of people with the feather north face gilet but they are £130, are they that good?

I'm thinking of something very warm but not bulky. I hate those long padded shiny looking coats (black shiny duvets) although they look v warm.

Get this. The warmest jacket on the planet. Yes, pricey, but it will last the rest of your life Smile.

Is it real coyote fur on the hood Hmm?

SleepyFergus · 01/09/2012 22:31

I've got one of those black duvet coats (although not shiny!) and whilst it makes me look like a cross between a pimp and the Michelin man, it's bloody warm and the best buy I made 2 years ago. Esp when we had that horrific cold winter and were digging ourselves out the snow. I know it prob makes me look enormous, but at least I am toasty and enormous!!

MrsFlippingHeck · 01/09/2012 22:32

It is very lovely but Dh would pass out if I told him it cost £529. (& if it is real fur it would be a no go for me) thanks though. Have you got one?

Try one of these - cosy!

MrsFlippingHeck · 01/09/2012 22:43

sleepy thanks, hmmm I suspected they were very warm they do look it but I just can't get one. My neighbour has one and I really don't like it.

Millie they are v nice, thanks. Are they scratchy? I got dd a merino wool vest and it was disappointingly scratchy. Do people wear long johns under their jeans?

so annoying when they put that itchy lace trim on thermals.

Mrs FH not long johns but thermal tights under jeans, try M&S or similar.

FunnysInLaJardin · 01/09/2012 22:50

a pashmina and some cashmere gloves, also goats hair socks for the night. Oh and coat wise a lovely Jaeger wool/cashmere coat which still looks great after 2 years.

SrirachaGirl · 01/09/2012 22:58

I do have one and yes, it's real coyote fur (not farmed in China however, hence the cost). We live in Canada though so sometimes do encounter arctic temperatures on the school run.

MrsFlippingHeck · 01/09/2012 23:03

Thanks ruby v good idea re thermal tights.

funnysin that sounds lovely (and v elegant) I'm a bit more muddy farm track than Oxford street so it all has to be machine washable.

I'd second millie's recommendation for Bella di notte. Not itchy just incredibly comfy, they do ones without lace if you're bothered. Wash like a dream too.

FreeButtonBee · 02/09/2012 07:29

Uniqlo thermals are good and cheap (size up though - they are teeny)

DaPrincessBride · 02/09/2012 09:11

Another recommendation for Uniqlo thermals heat tech range, they are fantastic and reasonably priced (and often on offer!)
