hello :)

It's nearly jumper weather. I buy cardigans and then I get annoyed when they go all bobbly. Shaving the fur off only works a little bit.

Is there a magic £100 jumper that you buy and then you look lovely and new and smart for longer than 10 minutes?

Or should I just go in New Look and be done with it?

I already try my best not to wash my knits too often.

Anyone got a foolproof method for not looking all bobbly seconds after buying their knitwear?

Some fabrics pill worse than others - I have the same thing in different colours and one colour pilled badly, the others didn't Hmm

I do try to wash inside out (don't know if it helps) and not put tough things in the same load, like jeans or anything. But then I always look like a bag of rags TBH.

cashmere lasts for ever.

i would avoid knitwear heavy in acrylic

Nagoo · 30/08/2012 14:24

Do you have to dry clean cashmere? I CBA with dry cleaning. It would cost more than my clothes.

Does it last forever because you daren't wash it?

I find only decent cashmere (like Brora) lasts forever, everything else bobbles sooner or later.

I hand wash cashmere or occasionally machine wash on the hand wash cycle.

TheBirdsTheBirds · 30/08/2012 15:50

Only buy 100% pure wool or cashmere - the bobbles that form are large and very easy to remove by pulling off gently. Don't use those razor things or you might make a hole like I did. Bobbles on mixed fabrics, esp acrylic, are horrible, tiny and uniform and don't come off, so your knitwear looks crap after two wears.

I don't bother with dry cleaning anything - just handwash in COLD water, not lukewarm, because even a little bit of warmth will shrink it (again, I speak from experience).

You don't have to spend loads, there's a lot more cheap cashmere and wool around these days (e.g. Uniqlo) and it works out cheaper per wear anyway.

TheBirdsTheBirds · 30/08/2012 15:53

Hopefully my cashmere jumper from Uniqlo hasn't bobbled yet and I've been wearing it loads for 2 years! But my grandma does always feel it and say it's not REAL cashmere like she used to wear - ie cost £200+ and super soft :)

My acrylic jumper from new look gets loads of compliments and washes really well

dexter73 · 30/08/2012 16:08

I machine wash all my cashmere on the wool cycle. It comes out better than if I hand wash it!

noddyholder · 30/08/2012 16:10

I have 2 cashmere and they are a faff to wash but I do love them. I have a primark bright blue jumper 50% cashmere and it is my favourite as it goes in the machine! Can only do acrylic if I wear something under There is a lovely low backed black jumper in zara but its acrylic but may be ok for evening

noddyholder · 30/08/2012 16:11

this

Nagoo · 30/08/2012 16:15

evening... Grin ha! Evening is for dressing gowns and a fleece blanket from Dunelm.

Does the 50% jumper get bobbly?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 30/08/2012 16:16

No the 50% jumper is the smoothest!

Nagoo · 30/08/2012 16:16

Actually, I really like that Zara jumper :)

noddyholder · 30/08/2012 16:18

so do I! Might risk it Grin

My problem is the higher the wool content, the quicker it gets eaten by moths. They seem particularly partial to cashmere. All my favourite woolies end up with ragged cuffs and neck, and with holes in the front, within six months. I may have to get rentokill in...

GobblersKnob · 30/08/2012 16:57

I love that Zara jumper.

My jumpers never seem to bobble regardless of what they are made of, it may be that I don't wear them in the house though, as I don't really feel the cold, so I don't 'do' much in them iyswim.

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/08/2012 16:59

cashmere always wears well, I have loads of jumpers and cardi's and wear them all year round. Plus the colours stay true
