Um. It's a no from me.

dexter73 · 29/08/2012 08:36

They look like they smell bad. I don't know if they do as I have never smelt any.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 29/08/2012 08:36

Nah.

Unlurked · 29/08/2012 08:38

I love dreadlocks. Dont think I'd ever be brave enough to do it though.

TallulahTwinkle · 29/08/2012 08:40

No from me too, sorry :)

FasterHigherBeardierDaddyman · 29/08/2012 08:40

If you want it do it, but I might recommend teeny tiny plaits instead of dreads

Plaits can be removed without hair loss, dredds need to be chopped off to remove.

MorrisZapp · 29/08/2012 08:40

I think they'd be uncomfy to sleep on. and look rough as boots

Pudden · 29/08/2012 08:42

nah; they look rank, like the matted, pooey lumps of wool round a sheep's arse!

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 29/08/2012 08:45

What do you look like, and what is your hair like naturally? They look far better if you have thick hair so you can't see your scalp through them, IME.

ditavonteesed · 29/08/2012 08:47

my hair is really straight and really fine, I have had plaits and woll extensions before, the plaits never really filled the gaps on the scalp, I think dreads do that by themselves over time.

ditavonteesed · 29/08/2012 08:49

ike this is what I think. although obviously I dont look anything like her.

Dreads will fill the gaps over time but they do take a couple of years at least to bed in properly.

I've got curly hair naturally so mine 'took' pretty quickly and now are nearly bum length. I keep thinking about cutting them shorter but I don't want to lose the ringletty bits on the ends.

I'm clearly biased but I love 'em.

ditavonteesed · 29/08/2012 09:02

queen, currently have a not quite shoulder length bob with very dtraight sleek hair, is it doable? I have always wanted them but I henna my hair and I have oonly just found out that I can still henna so am seriously thinking about it. Also I am applying to uni to do midwifery and would worry about it affecting my prospects.

You can get dread falls from ebay or easy which look ace imo. Might be a halfway house before committing totally. I like dread (though am really quite conservative myself ) they're cool and I always think people with dreads are laidback and interesting looking (assumptions may not be correct)

Wearsuncream · 29/08/2012 11:01

Etsy not easy

GeekLove · 31/08/2012 09:05

If you want natural dreadlocks you will need to consider factors like how long and straight your hair is. If it is long, straight hair then it will be very hard work to not have them look like something is decaying on your head.

But I reckon that they can look good providing they are tight and nappy and are kept clean and tight.

You could consider getting a dread perm first so that your hair is more likely to nap up faster. The best way to get ordered dreads is to section of your hair as if you were having braids put in. Make sure that they are as even in size as possible. Get a comb with a fine toothcomb and then BACKCOMB TO HELL! KeeP on at it and you should have a fat, fuzzy dreadlock. Then you need to rub it so that it resembles a more usual shaped dreadlock. A small about of hair wax will help with this. And repeat. You will need to keep up with backcombong, rubbing and twisting especially at the roots. Wash your hair as normal but skip conditioning and rinse thoroughly.

If you follow this regime then you should have dreadlocks that don't smell like a blocked sink and which actually look good. the not washing them is a myth.

There's a guy in Edinburgh who has one big, massive dreadlock. It looks like a beaver's tail. I don't think that's the look you're going for though.

cybbo · 31/08/2012 09:13

They always look dirty

Nagoo · 31/08/2012 09:23

I like them.

They don't smell. People think that they smell because they are often attached to smelly men.

Nice ones look nice; dirty matted ones look rank. Just be really careful about the style - you don't want to look like Bo Derek in 10, or a sunburnt British tourist in Ghana. If you've got a sense of style, you'll carry it off beautifully.

I think it's undeniable that it will affect people's perceptions of you, though. In midwifery, it's bound to make people think you're a lentil-eating homebirther. For many, that won't be a bad thing, though Grin

hazeldog · 31/08/2012 09:36

I've had mine over 10 years and they look nice and tidy. You only live once innit. They do look a bit "sideshow Bob" for the first few months though. As for looking like the girl in the picture you can't really control how your hair dreads up. My natural hair was always rat taily so it lovs s being in dreads. Some peoples hair doesn't and looks matted and scruffy. You willl lose a lot of length too.

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 31/08/2012 09:37

I think dreads on women can look awesome.

I had teeny tiny plaits with extensions so they came down to my bum once though...

I looked like a teeny tiny twat Sad

booksandchoc · 31/08/2012 09:48

I would love to get dreads but I really don't have the guts. I have dead straight, kinda thin-ish hair so don't know how well it would look. If you really want to you should go for it tho.
