Hi,

I am in desperate need of a hair style! But I am hopeless at this sort of thing and just don't know where to start.

My hair is brown and quite thick. It is currently shoulder below shoulder length and is just Long Hair. It's supposed to have some shape cut in around the face but I don't think the hairdresser did a good job last time particularly (as on it just all looks like long hair to me!), my hair is naturally quite frizzy so to wear it down requires me to dry and straighten it which takes the best part of an hour. I just don't hve this sort of time every day so almost all of the time I just end up wearing it tied back in a ponytail. I couldn't look less stylish if I tried!

I am tempted to get it cut shorter (potentially quite a lot shorter) but have no idea what sort of style to go for. Or even how to start coming up with something. I have long hair because I has long hair when I was 18 and I'm yet to come up with something else! I think at 34 I'm old enough to go for something shorter. But I want it to be nice. Oh and did I mention stylish too Grin.

Any help gratefully received.....

this?, how short do you want to go? Imo shorter hairstyles are harder work than long hair, at the very worst long hair can go into a ponytail on bad hair days!

I have short hair but it's poker straight. I've not used a hair dryer in years. Had long hair before going short and it was Hard Work and I just didn't have the time to be drying and faffing with it.

Ask a decent (maybe another) hair stylist for a consultation. Take a few pics with you, for referrence.

Short hair can be hassle free.....with the right cut.

Your hair sounds similar to mine. Last summer I got it chopped off in a short boring bob which looked quite good (go Louise Brooks short) whilst it was still short and grows out to be quite mumsy manageable. But, it does need regular trims - which I cba to maintain. Anyway, check out Helena Christiansen's hair in the Boden catalogue That's what I'm attempting to emulate next time - would that work for you?

I think with thick hair you need to go very long or short because medium gives too much volume.

I'd go to a reputable (think senior stylist at well-known place) stylist for a consultation with some pictures, like Eliza has suggested.

Its a good idea to try to select pics of models/celebs who have similar hair to you, that you like the style of.

eg. I have long hair and love Penelope Cruz style but my hair isn't thick or wavy enough so wouldn't bother trying to achieve.

I have similar hair to yours.I decided to have my hair straightened using Aveda [also have highlights] and it has been absolutely brilliant. The condition is still good and i don't need to blowdry it.I now have a perfect bob with no kinks or frizz and my fine hair feels much thicker.

Thank you all - shall google the names mentioned when I'm at my computer.

Is aveda like the keratin straightening thing? I had that done and it was good but I don't think the hairdressers were v good. I'm not overly pleased with the hair colour and cut they did so I'm sure it's totally possible that they didn't do as well with the straightening as a better salon night have done? Eg they didn't use GHDs so presumably the straightness you're left with is only as good as they straighten it during the treatment. And I've had my hair straightened better at other salons iyswim. So I still need to dry and straighten it but it's much quicker than before.

I presume it is similar but mine used ghd's about 3 times i think during the straightening process.Apparently there are 2 options -a more relaxed version and the more severe option which is the one i had.So it is entirely possible that you had the other one.

Biscuitsandtea · 28/08/2012 11:08

Ah yes yours sounds a bit more hardcore. Mine used straighteners once but they weren't ghd's and i do find that you get the best results with gds on my awkward hair!. But I think having tried it out on the cheap through a groupon voucher I'd be prepared to give it a go at a decent salon next time!
