How do you clean your makeup brushes?

Embarrassing/disgusting confession - I don't think I've EVER cleaned mine. I want to give them a new lease of life, not to mention be a tad more hygienic.

I have a varied selection - some MAC and Bobbi Brown, Bare Minerals, Boots No 7 and Stila.

So what do you use? Shampoo and water? A special brush cleaning formulation? Do you leave them to soak? How do you dry them so they don't go hard and crispy?

Thanks knowledgable ones :-)

I use something called Sard Wonder Soap - not sure if it's available in UK but it's a stain remover soap with eucalyptus oil. For tougher stains, I dip the brush directly into some eucalyptus oil. After wetting and soaping them up, I rub them one way on one of those textured silicone mats - I think mine was originally meant to be a potato scrubber. Then I rinse them under running water. It's very important not to soak them because that can loosen the glue. I dry them on a cake rack and once a week I'll dry them in the sun (again not every time because of glue).

People clean their make up brushes...😳😳😳

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/03/2017 21:04

This where I get to show off. Id seen those ribbed things to clean brushes in . Id also bought some Dior nude foundation which is really, really runny. I appropriated a piece of Perspex from the tech workshop and got my glue gun out. On one side I made a washboard effect on the other a circle of glue. I use this side as a palette for foundation the other to clean brushes. I got a plastic pot and put lines and spots on the base for dd.

Ridingthegravytrain · 13/03/2017 21:08

I was and tumble dry mine with my clothes!

JoJoSM2 · 13/03/2017 21:18

A make-up brush cleaner. I spray it on and wipe the brushes without the risk of glue coming undone.

Meowstro · 13/03/2017 22:22

Dip them in a little bit of surgical spirit, wipe off the excess, do it a couple of times until they are clean and leave them to air dry. If I run out, I use tea tree shampoo and do the same. Careful not to get them too wet, especially at the bristle base (where it's connected to the brush handle) as I've had bristles fall out of perfectly good high quality brushes because it loosens the glue too much.

I wash mine in washing up liquid then soak them in Milton over night and then I dry them on kitchen roll.

I use a bar of soap or baby shampoo for my delicate natural hair brushes with the sigma spa glove.
Lay them flat to dry and once dry I use a brush guard to reshape the bristles.

RebelandaStunner · 15/03/2017 19:38

Every two weeks with a baby wipe.
Once in a blue moon with bicarbonate of soda then rinse and leave to dry naturally.

MrsT2007 · 15/03/2017 19:42

Baby shampoo then naturally dry after a quick dip in IPA to kill any bugs

MrsGsnow18 · 15/03/2017 19:50

I'm another for baby shampoo and leaving on radiator to dry. I have to confess to not doing it as often as I should! Blush

HoneyDragon · 15/03/2017 22:43

You wash and tumble dry them?!

Tell me more....

MakeupLover1 · 15/03/2017 23:47

I wash my brushes once a week using warm water and Dove liquid hand soap. Rinse the soap out well then pat them dry in a towel. I then stand them back up in my brush pot to fully dry.

BusterGonad · 16/03/2017 05:27

I use shampoo and wash them gently in warm water, I try not to get too much water need where the bristles meet the glue iyswim. I then pop on some hair conditioner and leave it on for 5-10 minutes. Rinses and leave to dry flat on a towel. I would never use washing up liquid, if I'm spending £££ on nice brushes I'm going to look after them! Also I don't want any residue on my skin from it.

BusterGonad · 16/03/2017 05:30

Mowgelijeffs your post makes me fear for your brushes! Don't the bristles fall out with all that soaking!!!

Ridingthegravytrain · 16/03/2017 20:58

Honey..I don't spend a lot on my brushes so if they don't survive it's no hardship! But I chuck them in on a 40 or 60 degree wash with whatever I'm washing at the time and then tumble dry in with the clothes. No casualties so far!

BoboChic · 16/03/2017 21:00

Woolite in hot water. Rinse and repeat and rinse under hot running water. Leave to dry on kitchen roll.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 16/03/2017 21:30

That Superdrug B range do a brush cleaner spray- squirt a bit on a piece of kitchen roll and rub brush gently on top - bingo! I do this between uses to ensure the brush is clean and not making colours muddy. Then once every couple of weeks months I wash them properly with fairy liquid/ hand soap/shampoo , squirt with an alcohol spray then leave on their side to dry.

Primark have a small black pot that contains a brush cleaning bar. It rivals the way more expensive beautyblender cleansing bar which I've also used. Dampen the bar, swish brush head around in it, swish again in the palm of my hand and rinse in warm water. Leave to dry on a towel on the edge of my chest of drawers. This avoids the ferrule rusting or the glue melting. Previously I've used baby shampoo and I also use surgical spirits for a quick wipe in between weekly washes.
I've some synthetic mac brushes that are 20 (!!) years old and still in mint condition. I'm weird though in that I enjoy my weekly brush wash fest!!

mowgelijeffs · 17/03/2017 14:08

Hahahaha I don't know? Mine are fine but I think I should replace them.
I even wash my husbands watch in Milton over night ConfusedConfused

BusterGonad · 17/03/2017 15:16

What's the crack with the Milton Mow? Do you have a issue with germs???? Grin

mowgelijeffs · 17/03/2017 15:19

Yea they are gross aren't they?
I'm never sick and have an immune system made of steel but I'm phobic of germs so I like to kill them.
That and my husband has a smelly wrist.
Milton gets rid of his stench but only the tablets because the fluid I learnt the hard way actually bleaches the colour out of things. That wouldn't be good on my husbands alligator skin watch strap would it 👏 that will teach him for having something so ridiculous.
I also clean the floors by hand with a new tea towel every third of the way through a room. Mops are rank..

Misssss · 17/03/2017 18:54

I put mine in the washing machine. I pop them in the legs of old tights. Tie a knot in the top and put on a quick wash with an old towel. They come out perfect and haven't disintegrated yet. I've been doing this for at least 18 months.
