Gradual Tan moisturisers

So after my 2nd failed attempt at full on fake tan, I've come to the conclusion that fake tan & me just isn't going to work! But rather than accept that I am going to look like a rather large blob of rice pudding by the pool on my holiday, I've decided to try the more subtle self tanning options! I've tried the johnsons one ages ago which left me a bit streaky, and I've also tried the dove one which was better, are there any others that are worth a try? Oh and what cheapish exfoliant should I be using, my knees always end up really dark, yet I've scrubbed them well before & moisturised?!!

The clarins after sun with a touch of fake tan is very good

MrsClown1 · 27/08/2012 20:31

gregssausageroll · 27/08/2012 20:33

You need a fake tan mousse - they are coloured so you can see where you are putting it - used with a tanning mitten (get them from Boots). The tan mits are fabulous, and used with coloured mousse virtually guarantee a streak free tan.

Palmers cocoa butter with self tan.

Smells strong just because of the cocoa butter I think it's fab.

Exfoliate really well a few days before first application and exfoliate and apply cream every day.

St Tropez Gradual Tan. Piece of piss and smells nice (floral).

daimbardiva · 27/08/2012 21:03

Garnier one is good

freerangeeggs · 27/08/2012 21:23

Agree about Palmers cocoa butter tanner. Gies colour straight away, too.

Ponyinthepool · 28/08/2012 15:30

Garnier is great, doesn't smell too bad either - use the light one and build it up over 2-3 applications. Apply before bedtime, moisturise hands and feet, make sure you're completely dry before climbing into bed.

Wandawingsthe2nd · 28/08/2012 15:43

Don't forget that the chlorine will make the tan fade quickly.

SwedishEdith · 28/08/2012 16:00

Yes, the Garnier light one is pretty good. Be careful to wipe off backs of ankles, round soles of feet, backs of knees etc. I just put it on where I'd "tan" anyway (in theory). I even managed to wear short skirts on holiday this year which I'd never, ever do normally because I didn't look too blue and was on holiday so would never see any of these people ever again
