Skin has improved...

....since I quit moisturising.

I'm kind of baffled about this, and wasn't expecting such results.

So, I have always moisturised, since my early 20's or so (I'm 38 now) and never really thought much about it. But over the last 12 months I have been on the lookout for something new, as my skin seemed to be suffering from lack of sleep, general stress, and basically looking a little worse for wear - more visible pores, blotchiness and so on. Whenever I tried an anti-aging cream my skin broke out terribly, so in the end I just reverted back to using my tried and trusted Garnier day cream, which I'd been using for years.

Well, eventually my last jar out and I felt somewhat reluctant to purchase a new one, in the hopes of maybe locating some new (probably extortionate) wonder cream, like you do....but for some reason just forgot about it. I continued to cleanse, used Boots P&P eye cream and began to exfoliate (Boots again) 4 times per week.

After about two months I started to notice how great the condition of my skin actually was - pores invisible, even complexion, smooth surface, firmer, and actually more 'youthful' looking. The conditions of my lifestyle have not improved, so I cannot think of any other reason for such a positive alteration.

I was wondering if this had happened to anyone else, and what your thoughts were. Obviously I am not using any expensive stuff here, although I have spent a fortune in the past. For now I ain't gonna complain, shall roll with it and keep to the current routine. Surely moisturising is important?

Really, really surprised though!

For reference, I have 'normal' very pale skin.

Mine too. Moisturiser is rubbish.

Agree. I started cleansing with the Body Shop Moringa Beautifying Oil when I ran out of cleanser- someone had left it as a gift for me. I have noticed a difference over a couple of months now. I don't wear moisturiser at night any more now and during the day I wear the simplest, cheapest Nivea day lotion: it has SPF 15 and absorbs really quickly. (Where I live hot sunny weather is NOT a problem - I reckon I'm okay on the SPF front!)
I want to upgrade to Rosehip oil, though, when I run out.

I went to bed the other day without doing anything to my face. Was exhausted and just fell into bed. Slap left on, everything. Woke up looking just the same as if I'd done my usual C.T.M routine. Makes you wonder.

I was curious whether my skin had got any oilier too, but I don't think it had. It's almost as if it was simply waiting for me to stop using the stuff so that it could breathe again. The biggest 'wow' factor here has been the exfoliator - I didn't know I had such nice skin under there screaming to get out!

Really intrigued by rosehip oil, etc. Never used essential oils on face before.

Sadly most SPF creams make me break out too. La Roche Posay for example. A bit miffed about that.

This is so interesting.

I went into hibernation for the last few months of pregnancy and post nately, no make-up, very basic cleansing with dove 'soap' when I showered and occasional moisturiser when I could be bothered.

My skin was spot free and smooth - even other people commented on it.

Since I've got back into a routine (twice daily cleansing, moisturising, night cream) it's got worse.

Could be pg hormones I suppose.

Loving hearing about other people's experiences.

Which exfoliator are you using OP?

I've been plagued with awful skin since May this year. Its gone very greasy and ecaema patches all over my chin and sides of my nose Sad

I've been using a Lancome expensive moisturiser, but it has just run out. Tempted to not bother getting any more.

ToastedTeacakes · 27/08/2012 16:41

thenightsky - it's Boots 'Beautiful Skin Radiance Exfoliator'.
Tried an online shopping search for it and the exact tube doesn't show up.
Definitely in local branches though, as mine is rather small.

I'm not sure I'll go back to using a basic moisturiser now, maybe in the future if my skin seems to require it (I'm expecting many changes over the coming decade, obviously, oh boy!).
