Hair loss

I didn't know where to post this but knew S&B gets a lot of traffic.

I had my DD 4 months ago and my hair has been falling out in clumps. I expected it and it's not really bothering me but if there anything I should be using to minimise this? I'm also not getting time to dry my hair and it's getting put up wet and is constantly up in a ponytail. I think this is causing me to get a few scabby bits at the back of my head (boak).

Is there any particular shampoo or product you lovely people can recommend to help my poor head recover? I do have very sensitive skin so nothing too harsh. Oh or even anything I should be taking like a supplement that might help?

Wish I had the balls to shave it all off, would save a lot of hassle!!

Try sea kelp supplements, my hair shedded like mad after both my dc and it was really distressing but they seemed to help

Look at your diet, are you eating plenty of fruit and veg, good proteins etc. If not, get eating better! foods good for hair are things like, fish, chicken, eggs, nuts, olive oil

My favourite thing in the world for hair is coconut oil (buy the extra virgin cold pressed stuff) use it as an overnight treatment and it will help the condition of your hair and scalp. I have been doing this every couple of nights for a few months and I have never had such good hair. Castor oil is also meant to work well but have never tried it.

Try not to put your hair up as that can put stress on the roots which will make things worse

Use gentle shampoo and conditioner, ie, baby shampoo / conditioner or Simple stuff is really good too

Also, if it carries on, maybe go to your gp and ask for a blood test as it could be low iron / hormonal?

Hope this helps, its really worrying isn't it x

I'm having the exact same thing for the exact same reason Smile

I had this when DD was about 6 months - it came out in handfuls, was quite distressing! It started coming back when she was around 12 months, I had all short tufty bits round my temples for ages! I started taking a multi-vitamin with zinc and this definitely helped.

Its horrible isn't it, the first time it happened (after dc1) I wasn't expecting it so was convinced I was going to go bald, I was sick with worry :(

Thanks for all the replies!

My diet isn't the best, in craving sugar all the time! Plus I don't like fish or eggs so that limiting me.

Do you think it's worth my while going to the Dr to let them see my scalp as they could maybe prescribe a shampoo?

Starting to worry that I'm gonna block the loo by flushing all my hair away Grin

Is your iron level ok? try Spatone

lizmarshmallow · 27/08/2012 19:39

They checked it about 6 weeks ago and it was alright. Could it have changed again?

Hello,

My name's Dr Reddy and I am a hair loss expert who works at The Private Clinic.

I came across this thread and thought I would offer some advice on the topic of hair loss.

Lizmarshmallow - A woman's hair during preganancy is generally in fantastic condition due to the high level of hormone support that her body experiences, however It is natural to experience hair loss once the baby is born as hormone levels suddenly drop and it can take as long as 9 months before the hair cycle begins again, when your hair will return to normal. In the meantime I would strongly advise that you visit your local GP to ensure that there are no underlying conditions causing this loss.

To minimise the loss and help preserve your hair, I would recommend washing your hair every other day, it's best to avoid warm water, instead opt for luke warm water. Holland and Barrett sell a fantastic aloe vera shampoo and I recommed that you invest in this to help your head and hair recover.

If you have any other questions that I can help with on the matter then do let me know - Thanks!
